Hey Geoff, thank you for another great video. I love watching them all, including the All the Stations videos and to see your excitement when you ride trains or at an event like this, makes me smile 😃❤️ Keep them coming.
You don't get a budget of £15,000,000,000 by cutting costs! Apparently if you're willing to throw money at something like it's going out of fashion the government will gleefully provide you with more - as long as you spend it in or on the capital, that is.
The operation of the Charing Cross and Bank branches are to be seperated. And 50 new trains are to be built. At Camden Town the number of trains are to increase from 24 to 30-36 per hour.
The concrete is the retaining wall that is put in place from the previous tunnel construction. The new machine has to break through it to join the tunnels.
London is built on clay not rock if there was no concrete liner the hole would be full of clay/mud. Sometimes they have to freeze it to stabilize it before tunneling through it.
This is a category I miss here on RUclips - the "what happens if you don't leave the train" videos... I mean, there are "trains driving over bad rail joints" videos... so I pretty much wonder why this isn't a thing yet...
How much does doing a media event like this cost them? It looks like a lot of preparation went into this that could otherwise have gone into the tunneling
Hopefully it has walls at the end of the platform with doors and when the tube train arrives those big doors open letting passengers enter inside and then no more people will jump on the tracks. Dubai international airport has this.
If someone wondered 'why the spanish flag?' that's just because Ferrovial, the construction company of this tunnel, is from Spain. They are doing the Second Avenue Subway in New York too.
I love that Yayoi Kusama Look with all the polka dots in the tunnel. But s/o should have straighten the Union Jack on the right before taking pictures ;) And Geoff, you looked like a boy in a toyshop- really funny. PS: Don't worry about "big boy's" cameras, you know, that it's true: size doesn't matter.
Geoff, what was the step count? I mean you are almost world famous for counting steps yet no count was given on what is possibly the largest number of steps currently on the London underground?!
The start of the video where Geoff went down the shaft made me think so much of the entrance shaft at the Brunel Thames Tunnel: www.brunel-museum.org.uk/visiting-us/grand-entrance-hall/
for very sensible reasons: it wouldn't be able to cope. with people coming in from all over the south west / south / south east, instead of going to Waterloo / Victoria, people would get out and try and get on the tube. and there is no way it could manage, so they deliberately didn't do that. you said it yourself 'busiest mainline station'.
I expect it will be hauled out of the shaft. But there are examples where they are just left buried in tunnels becouse it would be too expensive to recover them.
2:20 "Movie Theatre"??? You don't call it 'cinema'? How very American of you! You'll be drinking coffee next! Great video, though. I love these sneaky-peak videos.
You know, I was thinking "Northern line extension? So are they extending beyond Edgware? They're resuming the plans that were interrupted by the war? Well, first I've heard of that", then I remembered they were doing something Darn Sarf as well weren't they.
the worst part of this was hearing you say that there's going to be a couple of weeks over christmas where the northern line's gonna be shut down hahaha
Are those stairs the equivalent to 15 floors?
Of course. No more no less.
"always"
Here we go again ...
No train in the toilet this time !
This joke is overused

it's generally called 'Vlogging', Paul! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_blog :-) :-)
Geoff what can I say.. WOW! What an historic moment. Looked fantastic, and you got a bit of the concrete as well.
"It's not about size"
"Huge shaft"
Melbourne Transport I
Eric Gourlay What?
...
"that's what she said" 😎😜
I’m also from Melbourne
*Bad*
Hey Geoff, thank you for another great video. I love watching them all, including the All the Stations videos and to see your excitement when you ride trains or at an event like this, makes me smile 😃❤️ Keep them coming.
Oh, these PR types. Thought it necessary to have some lovely coloured projections going on to make it prettier!

So good to see someone reporting an event which clearly excites them!
Amazing piece of Engineering..
Incredible precision and execution without disastrous results.
Why did I cry when the crew stood on the rubble?
Great video as always.
Very exciting to see that - and you got a souvenir chunk of tunnel! 👍🏻
2017 asks: What is PPE?
2020 laughs.
2021 laughs louder 🤣🤣
2022 says, What kept you ?
Great stuff Geoff, your enthusiasm for the "Underground" is infectious. Keep the video's coming.
Great post, great filming and commentary. Amazing moment
Such a momentous moment for TfL. Glad this happening!
The operation of the Charing Cross and Bank branches are to be seperated. And 50 new trains are to be built. At Camden Town the number of trains are to increase from 24 to 30-36 per hour.
Good info
Now its all up and running and we've visited the finished stations it seems strange to see the construction stage again!
Good work getting in so early, can't wait to do the journey from Tooting to Battersea in mins!
Ya lucky git - lol. Nice one Geoff. Excellent work by the tunnellers and the whole NLE team.
Great video geoff! So cool that you got to go down to see the breakthrough!
Thanks for the brilliant video Geoff.
Thank you very much for NEWS report
Hey Geoff, Great Vid. Proof if it were ever needed that it's not What you know, but Who you know!!! Marshall got contacts!!!!!
Now it's open look how far we came
"This is my personal channel"
"oh...hello personal channel!" haha
Looking forward to All the TBM's...
wow amazing video Geoff love how they do it.
Absolutely BRILLIANT!
Hey Geoff, now it’s my turn to say, seeing you replied to my comment yesterday, Fun with flags!! ;)
I love all this stuff, I wish I could join you on some of these adventures
Love your videos, a real look at what goes on. As opposed to the over edited and homogenised releases of the established media
most exciting breakthru since the eurotunnel
That was great. Thanks for showing us.
It's great to see this sort of thing Geoff 😀
Absolutely brilliant!
Oh Great! so glad you covered the event!
Can't wait for the new extension to open
What will happen to that big shafts? Will it become a station or just be filled in?
Excellent work. You might be knighted after all you do for the London Underground.
2:40 is that Liz Truss right there above the white helmet?
Does this imply that there's a Kennington Loop video coming up?
Fantastic video!
Thumbs up for my countrymen in there!!
Juan Sánchez Good to see the Spanish Flag, viva Espana.
Peter Clapham Hooray for... Australia? 😳 or New Zealand? 😳😳😳😂 can't tell the flags apart
Australian, New Zealand flag has red stars with a white outline and are also to the left of the Union Jack.
Meant to say to the right of the Union Jack.
Peter Clapham oh then Hooray for Australia!
Grief, thats one fancy press release.
nice to see tunnel makers getting their day in sunshine
Can we have it up in Manchester to dig a tunnel for us next?
Please please please please please
I made the cutting tools for that beast!
Not true, i did it!
Was that completely staged for the press? Given the fact it was a pre-built concrete wall they broke through rather than rock?
The concrete is the retaining wall that is put in place from the previous tunnel construction. The new machine has to break through it to join the tunnels.
Right, that makes sense.
They have to build a concrete cap for the tunnel boring machine to dig through so that it doesn't damage the walls of the vertical shaft.
The SR99 "Alaskan Way" TBM broke through a concrete wall, like that at the end of it's journey as well.
London is built on clay not rock if there was no concrete liner the hole would be full of clay/mud. Sometimes they have to freeze it to stabilize it before tunneling through it.
When you realize that this vlogger is as much a press as BBC. #TeamInternet
This is a category I miss here on RUclips - the "what happens if you don't leave the train" videos... I mean, there are "trains driving over bad rail joints" videos... so I pretty much wonder why this isn't a thing yet...
Will the new station has new platform edge doors ?
Why on earth is it not going to Clapham Junction?
How much does doing a media event like this cost them? It looks like a lot of preparation went into this that could otherwise have gone into the tunneling
Is it true they bore the machine into the side of tunnel and leave it there
Will the Kennington loop go out of use when the Battersea extension is finished? (i.e. No more Kennington terminators?)
Apparently not, he talks about it in another video on the extension
Hopefully it has walls at the end of the platform with doors and when the tube train arrives those big doors open letting passengers enter inside and then no more people will jump on the tracks. Dubai international airport has this.
Platform edge doors? Jubilee Line has these, and Geoff said in another comment that this will too which is good :)
That must have been rather loud in person at 3:11
I envy you. I live down South, and I love the Underground.
How did you manage to wangle a ticket to that man i bet that was an experience and a half . Bet your other half was gutted to miss that.
I love the machine
Geoff which London underground do you like
Shouldn't there be TWO breakthroughs though? One each side?
Oh, BTW, being in Canada ( a colony) Can you please tell me Geoff where the extension is?
Very interesting...
No need to worry about counting the steps, we know its equivalent to 15 floors anyway
If someone wondered 'why the spanish flag?' that's just because Ferrovial, the construction company of this tunnel, is from Spain. They are doing the Second Avenue Subway in New York too.
Huge machines going thru rock.
Could you do a video on Crossrail 2? That would be great
Geoff, what was the step count? I mean you are almost world famous for counting steps yet no count was given on what is possibly the largest number of steps currently on the London underground?!
Great stuff Geoff! 'Movie theater' though? In Europe we call it a Cinema ; )
Exciting.
Where are they going?
3:07 Is that Liz Truss ?
When will open?
RIP to everyone’s ears who watched using headphone
Thats me
Heeeeeeeeere's Jonny!
B.B.C. big boys camera?
I would Love them to extend it south beyond Mordern, an there is a part where it could be joined onto another rail service. !!!!!
The start of the video where Geoff went down the shaft made me think so much of the entrance shaft at the Brunel Thames Tunnel: www.brunel-museum.org.uk/visiting-us/grand-entrance-hall/
What's the fate of the Met's extension to Watford Junction?
Brilliant
Is that extension a single or dual line?
Thank you, Geoff!
How many steps Geoff?
Toran J. Shaw the equivalent of a 15 storey building
how did you managed to gatecrash that event lol
I find it amazing or amusing that they did not go to Clapham Junction, one of the biggest and busiest mainline London stations and no bloody tube!
for very sensible reasons: it wouldn't be able to cope. with people coming in from all over the south west / south / south east, instead of going to Waterloo / Victoria, people would get out and try and get on the tube. and there is no way it could manage, so they deliberately didn't do that. you said it yourself 'busiest mainline station'.
Awesome
Was that liz Truss?
So how will the TBM get out of there?
Trainzguy 2472 taken apart and pulled up the shaft Geoff and the spectators came down.
I expect it will be hauled out of the shaft. But there are examples where they are just left buried in tunnels becouse it would be too expensive to recover them.
risvegliato ist one of the TBMs that did the chunnel still there
Dissapointed you didn't count the steps!
No need, we know it’s 15 storeys deep however many steps.
2:39 Hey, you've met Liz Truss before her becoming of a global success.
Suckcess
Looked like a temporary wall they broke through.
They lined the vertical shaft with concrete, so they just drilled through that.
They have to put up a retaining wall so the shaft doesn't collapse.
2:20 "Movie Theatre"??? You don't call it 'cinema'? How very American of you! You'll be drinking coffee next! Great video, though. I love these sneaky-peak videos.
4:16 About that 2020 time frame... 😂
You know, I was thinking "Northern line extension? So are they extending beyond Edgware? They're resuming the plans that were interrupted by the war? Well, first I've heard of that", then I remembered they were doing something Darn Sarf as well weren't they.
They found the chilean miners!
How old a reference?
Alistair Shaw I’m pretty sure that reference is about 6-7 years old now ::
In 2020 I will be doing year 6
Bakerloo line is next!...in about ten years lol.
It would make a good episode of Dr Who, monster breaks hole thru.!!!!
the worst part of this was hearing you say that there's going to be a couple of weeks over christmas where the northern line's gonna be shut down hahaha
It's not about size. It's about weather you have a rolling shutter ;)
