I remember being a nieve teenager back in the 80's, changing the valve stem seals on my Cortina's Pinto. Grubby hands over everything, not knowing how vulnerable that oil spray bar was to blocking with dirt. Learned the hard way when i put it all back together and went for my first drive - feeling so proud of myself for solving the smoke on start up issue. Got a couple of miles and wondered why the top end was sounding so noisy, and even more alarmingly, why did the engine smell like it was cooking itself, even though the engine temp gauge showed normal. Found out when i took the cam cover back off - cam shaft and followers completely toasted due to lack of oil. Luckily back then breakers yards were everywhere, and a complete head could be bought for next to nothing. Now hear i am nearly 4 decades later watching one of my favourite content creators working on one of his Pintos! Very enjoyable viewing Pete.

Great video Pete and many thanks. If you have a pillar drill then next time you want to descale your valves you can fit them in the drill chuck and use a scraper to remove the scale, it's a hell of a lot easier and quicker. The old camshaft did not look too bad on video, if it is scored then I would have definitely replaced it. The old one will always do for your other car if it is ok. Strangely enough I've never seen a Ford seal for the spray bar. I used to use a Hillman Imp valve seal which did the job nicely. It needs to be a rubber that does not perish in the oil. When adjusting the valves I adjust them so I can feel them just kissing the surfaces, it saves you messing around with two feeler sizes. A gap adjusted slightly on the loose side is far better than a gap that is too tight. The diesel was a Diesel Hydraulic class 52. Lastly I had a tooth out this last week, the one next to the wisdom. Hell of a thing was split in half so easier to remove. I don't think I'll miss it so I might just leave as it is, I know others who seemed to have managed without a tooth.

Hey it was 1976 I was in Prestatyn on Holiday when there was a complete coverage of Ladybirds…! 70’s yellow cars were completely covered in em and women screaming because they were in their hair… unbelievable it was… 😮

What do you think of fitting plastic wheel arch liners, apparently they were introduced with sound dampening material stuck to the rear to reduce the transmission of road noise into the cabin but ended up considerably reducing rust by protecting the metal bodywork.
