Wow! I would never, from my memories of Richard at Sharks of Port Harcourt in 1979/80 have imagined that Richard Owubokiri will look like this in 2024. I would never have recognised him had I not seen his name written. He was a super player then along with my then favourite Shark players, Josiah Dumbraye and Hamilton Green. Bless him.
Richie Owubokiri the legend of Boavista! Kai! What a long time. But Oga Richie, do you remember that miss you made against Tunisia in the first half of the 1985 World Cup qualifier in Lagos where Okey Isima scored the only goal? My father nearly broke the TV when you shot it over the bar with only the keeper to beat. Oh, what memories. Thank God for life oo.
Edafe, great job. You’re one of the greatest football interviewers I have ever seen. You know your onions, and have great command of the subject matter. I can watch you all day without getting bored or tired. You will go to places.
Lovely interview, we learn new things everyday, i had to check him out, he alongside Yekini are the two Nigerians to win the golden boot in Portugal. Good to see he is looking well and doing well too.
I enjoyed the interview very much, I see a lot of chess going on during the interview, Ricky is highly media trained and Edafe understands and was not pushing too much. I really enjoyed his story of his WAEC exam and the traveling experience. Never watched him played but from the way he speaks you know he's a very intelligent football player.
This man right here is brilliant, love the way he spoke even when he imitated the Portugues accent that part cracked me up... see me googling his name on Benfica to get more insight ....so Lionel Messi has 1 more record to break which is 6 goals in a match...Elegbete hold my beer first lemme go and show messi the record..
@@richardsonagbalalah3257 that's a very wrong choice of word, what do you by lazy journalists, why do people love to disparage journalists all the time?
@ELEGBETETV They don't do research nor investigate; rather they only report what they see or read online. Disparaging is not the word, I write from the point of a trained journalist myself.
@@richardsonagbalalah3257 If you are a trained journalist, then your choice of word is wrong. Because people did not write about Richard Owubokiri mean they are lazy? Please stop such rubbish. How many articles have you written about Richard Owubokiri and many more of his generation?
Wikipedia says Ricky scored 50 goals from 1991 to 1994 for Boavista. This contradicts the 56 goals in 1 season, as claimed by Ricky. Wondering if he can clarify.
If you read that wikipedia you would notice their account of the man is very inaccurate, plus I reached out to the club and they confirmed the story. So wikipedia is not accurate
@ELEGBETETV Thanks for the swift and succinct response, Elegbete. I hope Ricky will reach out to Wikipedia to correct the anomaly. it is quite significant, and we want our legends to be accurately represented.
hey, some of us knew about his exploits, he was top class, as the 2nd highest goal scorer in the entire Europe, behind marco van Basten, who had 34 goal in 90 season, Richard had 32 goals in that season,
I first knew Richard when he played for Gregs in the Lagos State Principals Cup. He, Albert Addi and his brother, Tarila Okoronwanta, Samson Siasia etc. LESSONS: First, for Nigerian football to grow, the connection between football and the secondary schools must be restored. Richard's WAEC story is very similar to Samson Siaisia's experience around 1983. Second, Richard was given his national team opportunities very late (same for Duke Udi and many others). For instance, he was already 33 in 1994 and played his best football 6 to 12 years earlier. The scouting for national team players should be improved, and it should not just be focused on Lagos and nearby states. Go to all the nooks and corners of Nigeria and you will find quality players, even better than many of those in Lagos. Well done, Elegbete.
Wow... had this man's picture on my bedroom wall. He was playing for Boavista at the time. Mumini Alao interviewed him at the time on Complete Football International. Unfortunately, Ricky came at the time Rashidi Yekini was banging in goals, ultimately limiting his impact at the national team level.
Ricky was in the eagle ahead of Yekini. He was in the 1982 squad to Libya 82 and was the main eagle striker when he around until 1985. Yekini came into eagle after his kaduna team went all the way to the final of FA in 1983 or so

Owobokiri was a goal machine scoring at home and abroad with ridiculous consistency
I wonder why no edifice was named after Coach Sinclair and Owubokiri

Ricky was in the national team as far back as 1985
Great player. I wonder why Nigeria did not avail herself fully to his prowess?
The coach [Westerhof] at that time said that Richard's playing style could not fit well with the system he had developed for the team.
