I have both the LL6 and the LL16. The LL6 was less expensive because it has laminate back and sides, but to look at them and play each of them, there's no compromise on quality. They're both excellent guitars. To be quite honest, to my ears I like the sound of my LL6 a little more. But that's just my own opinion.
Wow! Your side by side comparison was the deciding factor in an ongoing debate with myself over which one I wanted... I made up my mind that I am going with the LL16. Thanks for the help. And you sound great 👍 keep posting we are watching!
I played in a shop the ARE version of both: the difference is really big in favour of the LL16 ! Much more brightness and volume. The LL6 is very nice neverthless and it could be compared to Seagull S6 spruce; I prefer it over the Epiphone masterbilt ( that I also tested). What I liked from Yamaha ll models I tried is the playablity of the neck: IMHO better then the Seagull one.
Great review! You still have both guitars. It’s been a while since you did this review. Ll6 sounds to be warmer which i actually like better. Have the ll6 right now on 45 day trail from guitar center. It’s used 2014 model excellent condition. What would nice to see a review between the newer fg830 and the ll6. You ever played them back to back . Hey man again a great review. Thanks ! Jeff Clark from Rockdale Texas
Hello Sir, I feel that the LL16 is more balanced while the LL6 has less bass and treble. The LL6 feels brighter. Of course, I am not a guitar player (but I hope to buy my first guitar soon). Thanks a lot!!!.
LL6 I favour maybe bc it is a natural… on the other side the sun burst makes a great looking guitar and it still sounds great!!! I play a Yamaha FG5 I am a happy owner of any Yamaha Guitar and I a proud owner of an Old School Yamaha Classical guitar I learned from and found in many Music Rooms way back in the 1970s, decades old. Yamaha guitars are made reliable and sound great! Thanks for the Video Bud
Thanks man for your review, I am struggling on these two, LL6 sounds better in my opinion in clear notes playing, but I liked more LL16 for strumming and chord playing for its deeper and at least for my ear more interesting sound.
My guess is your ear prefers the compression that Yamaha’s laminate band and sides create. This sounds great with partial chords and even single note playing, but does muddy up the midrange when strumming. They’re definitely more forgiving to the player, but there’s little to no note separation.
Thanks for this. It would be interesting if you could set it up so people could close their eyes and not know which one you were playing. Let their ears decide. You could just introduce with “test 1 full picking” for example
I go for the cheaper 6 overall. A bit huskier. I've owned both and was more impressed with the 6 more for some reason. Profoundly informative, fine review here.
Both sound great and would be equal in different situations. LL6 has a drier compressed sound, great for recording, this video, it recorder great. I would like to hear the LL 16 after a few years, that guitar has more overtones and sustain. I like them both. 👍
The laminate back and sides do compress the sound nicely. Yamaha and Taylor have figured this out to their advantage…hence why every up and coming artist seems to play a Taylor 214. They now have an LL16M (Mahogany) that I’d love to test out. Mahogany is quieter, but has a lot of clarity.
Very similar. But I don't like either for strumming. I have a LL16 sitting somewhere that I rarely play, as it's rather heavy with a muddy sound as soon as you strums it. I have to say the LL body is better for fingerstyle stuff.
@@NightFlight1973 FG3 or 5 are good but expensive alternative if we are talking about Yamaha. FG7xx also good for strumming incredible value. I find the FS a bit boxy in their range. I try not to keep "cheap guitars" as they don't hold value, but I always have a FG7xx somewhere to pickup and play without worrying about it being may different than when I saw it 8 month ago.
Good review and good move changing the strings. I love the range, clarity and string separation of the LL16, I also love the tighter sound of the LL6 for blues and pop. The latter reminds me of the FG830 which is also a brilliant guitar.
I heard Led Zep, Alice in Chains, Extreme/Nuno, Metallica. Who I miss? Two cracking guitars. Grabbed the LL6 for £285 today, worn in a little. That LL16 is a beaut, for the future if I don't pick up the LJ16.. tempted to add another shape.
And just when I had pretty much decided on looking seriously at the LL6, I hear the LL16. The LL16 is a much better balanced guitar and seemed to be clearer farther up the neck. Thanks for the review, even if it further complicates my decision!

it must have been a 011, maximum 012...I remember they were heavier to play. Bottom line it holds well with heavier gauges. To your question...yes I think the LL16 has a better l sound projection which in my opinion is close to perfect. If I were you I would look for a used one in mint condition, even if its not ARE, and let the wood age with time. ll6 looks like fg830 pretty much - it is dull in bass and not so articulate up the fretboard. It is for the price of laminated back and sides. All the yamaha's have high trebles that annoy sometimes and could be cured by right strings setting - nobody knows which one is good for her by the way))))
I have slow sausage fingers, so i guess 44 really works better for me...the older I get, the more I appreciate thicker necks and generous string spacing... Overall this is the best acoustic neck I have ever had... Very playable. Very subjective thou... Peace
To me, i don't hear any difference! and i have a good ear and have been a guitarist for over 30yrs. A lot of bullshit is told about solid back vs laminate as the real strength and sound comes from the top. just my opinion.
The Ramble on riff shows the most difference, the LL16 sounds more "round" to my ears. Must be the solid back vs. laminate. Sounds of course fuller than the orginal LZ recording. Most of the other songs/riffs sounded very similar however.
Play them yourself. If you cant hear a difference between the 6 and 16, you have serious problems mate. Ive played them one after the other, quite a few times. I own the LL16D for a reason!
