The very, very great Ms. Carmen MCRAE is performing in God's Paradise as you read this. During her earthly descent she did many things in the American art form of "Jazz" that was beyond category. Embracing the true beauty of Lady Day and so many of her songs that were not well known such as "It's Like Reaching For The Moon and that "Old Devil Called Love." Singing chord changes with the lyric and accompanying herself so fabulously well on piano. Impeccable diction and timing, to name a few.
I believe this was one year before she retirede because of emphysema. I read that McCrae was a chain smoker. If only.... If only.... She still conveyed so much emotion in her interpretation. I love her earlier work and wish earlier video footage of her was available.

goodgirlsguide I used to listen to DS. I find she lacks a true emotional, soul connection when she sings a lyric. I can name the 3 or 4 best versions of this song and his right here with Ms Carmen is one of the best. The fact that she sings it like the lyrics are not memorized is an art … she creates Th scenario that she’s reaching emotionally for the words … a tried and true part of her incredible style. ~K
