Survive Knives - An In Depth Discussion

  • This was a simple conversation that just gives some more insight into the struggles a smaller knife manufacturer can go through. Guy laid out a lot of what happened involving the heat treat issues over at Pete's Heat Treat, adding to the issues with the providers. This is an unfortunate situation that Survive had to deal with and overcome to bounce back and regain some balance as a company. Guy is a very smart designer and manufacturer and is going to bounce back twice as hard as ever. I truly believe that. So I hope.you guys enjoy the content and feel free to use this link below to go order some in stock EDC 4's or get on the list for existing pre-orders. Thanks for watching!

    So, is Survive moving on from Peters permanently? Is the new heat treat facility local (within driving distance), or is Survive back to shipping logistical issues? Why is the new heat treat company as good or better than Peters? If so, Why not use them all along?

    Has anyone done and NDT on the steel to see if the flaws are inherent in the metal before your process or caused later? Ultrasonic would show laps from the initial rolling and radiographic inspection would disclose the large, rounded voids you have shown. Mag particle and liquid penetrant would disclose those at the surface.

    Now I am beginning to understand why some companies hand finish their knives even though they produce fairly high unit volumes. If you don't machine finish your knives, and you allow quite a bit of variation within each production batch, you can manage the variability in materials and heat treating. You can't run tight kydex sheaths with that much variation, but some people like the rustic nature of leather anyway. If you let tolerances slide and hand finish, you can recover more blades and turn a problem into a market niche.

    My "in stock" 3v EDC4 was shipped in 2 days.
    I have 3 knives from Survive. The limited edition GSO bushcraft in magnacut did take 2 months, and the limited edition EDC4 in magnacut took 1 month. But those 2 knives were before they put the 'Assembled and shipped within 15 days' message on the site.
    But I have bought knives from small shops before, like when Daniel Koster was making knives, it was just him doing it while still in school. It took about a year. To put it in perspective a larger company like Chris Reeves has a 7 year waiting list for his folders now, and the quality is not the same as it used to be from what I've seen. As a mater of fact, when the Sebenza first came out, I had to send it back cause the lock would slip. I had to to the same with my Hinderer xm-18

    • @jondallas311
      @jondallas311 4 месяца назад +3

      You are one of the lucky ones. And almost every other knife maker only requires a partial deposit on the knife. Guy, Ellie and Survive require full payment upfront, promise a delivery of 90 days, and then ghost you when you try to find out the status of your knife or to request a refund.
      Survive has a video posted on their channel where Guy literally says, "we will fight you on refunds" because he has already spent the money and doesn't have any cash to process a refund request. That's the issue.
      Even if we give Guy the ultimate benefit of the doubt, you cannot seriously be advocating for a business that willingly avoids responding to refund requests, and constantly blames everyone else. What legitimate business would conduct themselves that way?
      There are soooo many qualify knife makers out there trying to do the right thing by their customers, that I honestly can't see why anyone would waste their time with the clown show that is Survive. I mean, it's your money so you can do what you want. But it is obvious that Survive is preying on unsuspecting customers to place new orders to keep the ponzi scheme going.

      @JackShen 4 месяца назад +1

      @@jondallas311 I have a couple that are past the 90 day mark, with them. But I put those orders in after I got the three, I mentioned. I've bought a lot of high quality fixed blades like TRC's for example. The price for Survives, is really good for the quality of the product. I used the Daniel Koster example cause he was the only employee of his company, and he took the full payment up front. A lot of people got mad at him on Blade forum back in the day cause it took so long, but he delivered and it was a beautiful knife. I also picked up an extra from a cancelled order. But I know he didn't have to deal in the quantity that blowing up from being on DBK's channel did for Guy. I hope Survive gets through this, cause I do like their stuff. I can't speak to the refund issue, but I can imagine trying to pump out hundreds of knives while also trying to answer a deluge of questions on social media, and maybe the mental toll it takes from getting slammed a bit on the varying social media platforms. I honestly just want them to succeed and for everyone to get the knives they ordered.

    • @jondallas311
      @jondallas311 4 месяца назад +3

      There's no doubt that the price for Survive is great. And I have now switched to only Carothers for my fixed blade knives. Nathan makes it clear that you pay in full up front, but there is ample communication throughout the process, and he always delivers. It is possible to run a business the right way.
      I hope you get your order soon, and I hope Survive pulls out of the death spiral they've been in. But it sickens me to see unsuspecting customers falling into the same trap and believing the bullshit coming from Guy.
      There is a very clear pattern of behavior from Guy over the last 10 years. His is a pattern of promising a 90-day delivery, and then coming up with all kinds of excuses why that timeframe can't be met.
      And it is NEVER his fault...literally never. @@JackShen
