@@kremzski6760 lol, I am also not great with puzzle games, mostly do to a lack of patience, I can say that there are a couple I struggled with, but at times you can almost brute force your way through and solve them in ways you know they weren't designed to be solved in, but hey it works!
You are in for a real treat. To this day there's nothing quite like these games. At this price it's also a bloody steal. Co-op (in no 2) is the only game my wife played with me to the end. It's a blast!

The direct was great, I'm looking forward to so much stuff! Probably most hyped for Persona 5 but Monkey Island holds a special spot as one of the original ones was my first ever video game and I played through it with my parents. I'll have to look at that Live A Live demo as soon as possible though, I just don't know what to expect and HD-2D games have never disappointed me until now. And I knew Portal was good, I just didn't think I'd ever need it until now... My e-shop wishlist just isn't manageable anymore

That mini-direct was amazing! Wonderfully paced and a bunch of great games. Seeing some of these ports continues to make Square Enix's choice to make Kingdom Hearts cloud-only borderline reprehensible.
I've played Portal 1 & 2 to death on Xbox, absolutely my most favourite games. For anyone who hasn't played these gems before just do it now, I promise you won't be disappointed...Now, do I buy on Switch and play through again or save my money for something else 🤔.

I just got these games for Christmas. I'd never played them before, and I was completely blown away. Two of the best games I've ever played in my life, and I don't even like first person games. The design is impeccable, the gameplay and the puzzles are really fun and have the right amount of challenge. I should also add that playing the games with the developer's commentary is one of the most enlightening experiences ever as a videogame fan.
Not cheap at all when you consider the age of the games. That being said I am surprised valve isn't trying to charge more and it is fairly priced if you haven't played them yet.
@@fablecio ha. NIntendo have no issue charging top whack for even older games with no changes lol - e.g. Mario 3D "Allstars". These two games are sort of timeless - never go out of fashion. especially if you have never played them. at that price it's a very good deal.
I’ve always wanted to play a portal game so I’m very excited for these coming to switch, I think I might wait for the games to come out individually as i found out they will on the eshop however those haven’t came out yet even tho its release is the same as the bundle
You should get both, as both are awesome. Also, play Portal 1 before Portal 2. You will miss a lot of context in the sequel if you play that one first.
This was such an awesome mini direct, and I can’t believe how fairly priced this game is. It might be one of the first ones I pick up right away, I’ve never played it and can’t wait to get into it.

Missed out on Portal during the ps3 era (too busy with Uncharted/Ratchet & Clank, and I should say studying at uni, although that went a bit amiss 😂) , so definitely picking this up. Great news to hear it's a pretty solid 60fps and a steal IMO for £13.50! As for the Direct Mini itself! Definitely have my eye on "Blanc" although I worry one of those animals will die and it'll be harrowing! Might dip into Persona 5 Royal too. Had P5 from the PS Plus collection for PS5 but never properly sunk into it... Think it now being handheld on the lovely Switch changes that up completely!

I just watched this video. My notification popped up yesterday with the title, and my heart jumped out of its chest. I downloaded it right away, played the first game, and woke up this morning to watch your review which I knew was going to be perfect. I’ve been waiting for this series to come out since I bought the Switch. This is the perfect game for the dad gamer, hardcore gamer, or even kids!

This is going to be my first time playing the portal series so I’m very excited and glad that the port runs extremely well also I hope this means we will eventually get half life 1 and 2 on switch so I can also play those for the first time

I’ve never played Portal but at £13.49 I think I’ll pick them up! I actually enjoyed the direct I’d managed to stay spoiler free so I had 0 idea what was coming but there’s definitely a few been added to the wishlist including Blanc because that art style was beautiful ! Definitely be picking up all the personas I cannot wait for them!! And I think I’ll take a break from monster hunter stories 2 and test out that LiveAlive trailer even though ive had that on preorder for a while

I tend to wait for SwitchUp reviews before buying and putting any time into games. This game had completely slipped my gaming years for whatever reason and then forgotten about. After watching the recent direct mini I wasn’t sure if I needed it. Until this video dropped, cheers Mark. A brilliant review and very informative for myself to make that decision to finally enter the portal!
I've never played the second one but man I love the first! Might be one of my all-time favorites, and I don't usually like puzzle games. It's a definite grab for me.
You're in for an absolute treat. :) Although Portal was an amazing game at release it doesn't even come close to Portal 2. When revisiting Portal it almost feels like a proof-of-concept or demo in comparison to what Portal 2 offers. It's very creative and probably has one of the funniest and most absurd storylines in any video game. :D
I've played both games about 30 times each on PC, Xbox360 and Xbox Series S and also finished both games today and I can confidently say that the ports are perfect, sans some minor framerate dips below 60 in the giant areas of Portal 2 right after placing a portal
The reference about staring into infinity and backlog of games had me nervously chuckling away as I thought of how many games I have yet to play. Thanks for an awesome review and another game to said backlog

Really enjoyed the direct, tons of interesting announcement for me. That was quick guys!! Was waiting for reviews on performance for this, also i dont know if you know the exc rate but it's really cheap on the mexican shop, 250 MXN are around 11 USD or 10 GBP.
I played through both of these games on the Xbox 360 so I'm not in any hurry to re-buy them, but I'll definitely be wishlist'ing it for a good sale down the line. About the Mini Direct, I was disappointed. The primary reason being that it was focused on third party games when it's mainly first party games I'm interested in info or announcements on. I'm of course talking about games like Bayonetta 3, Splatoon 3, the next wave of Mario Kart 8 tracks, the rumored Metroid Prime remaster, and so on. That isn't to say there weren't a few bright spot for me though. I've got MHR Sunbreak digitally preordered on the eShop so the title update notes were cool. The Live-A-Live demo drop was cool as that's a game I'm interested in somewhat. I thought Blanc looked neat as I'm a sucker for puzzle platformers and cute animals. Nier Automata was a pleasant surprise. The Persona ports were a nice closing announcement, even though rumors kind of foreshadowed it. No Silksong update after a showing in Xbox's event was the omission that bummed me out the most. I've been under the impression Hollow Knight outsold every other platform on the Switch, so why it would get first mention (after the radio silence) for Xbox is curious.
I've missed Glados!! Only played Portal 2 & it's still my fav game. Didn't think it would drop until later this year. So hyped!! Can't wait to co-op w/my best friend.
I have had perfect internet connection too an was getting that internet pop up every time I went to a new level in portal 2, but besides that these games are running perfectly for me! Portal 2 is my favorite game of all time and it’s so nice to finally be able to play it on the go!

I wish they'd make more 7th gen remasters and ports for Switch. I'd love to see the Infamous and Dead Rising games on Switch, especially if they added gyro controls.
These were my two favorite games of the 7th generation. They might just be perfect video games in my eyes. Have not played Portal 2 since around 2014 on my PS3 version and have not played Portal 1 for at least 10 years on my 360 copy of The Orange Box. So yes, I bought these immediately on my switch

One of the best games of all time, now portable!, Valve had already ported (no pun intended) Portal 1 to the Switch SoC (Tegra X1) when they ported (no pun intended again lmao) Portal 1 & Half Life 2 to Android for the Nvidia Shield. So they had it as an option for a long time ago, so great having these in the switch, it is really tempting me up to get an Oled Switch, but I gotta resist the urge lmao.

Quick question, the whole "phoning home" thing, where it checks whether or not you are online, do you have a review/pre-release copy? It could be possible that's the reason why. I'm tempted to purchase but I think that's fair too intrusive and an annoyance that seems like a bug not a feature. If it isn't because you have a review/pre-release copy, I do hope it gets fixed. It's likely I won't hear about it getting fixed as this'll go under my radar, but I guess they'll get my money eventually rather than right away (if it does get fixed).

Never played the Portal games and will definitely get them. The direct was great. Blanc, Portal, the Mega Man Battle network collection, that Annapurna game with PS1 aesthetic. Even the Pac Man game looked fun. Oh and I looooove shadow drops, my gargantuan backlog and wallet not so much.
Portal was one of my first proper video games, definitely gonna get this on the Switch, there's no nostalgia (because I keep consistently replaying it) but it'd be good to have it on the go!
I had little to no expectations for the mini direct but i'm so happy! Finally persona 3, 4 and 5 are coming to Switch I have been waiting for years. I really hope there will be physical editions but glad to finally get them on the Switch. Also really excited for more DQ and Nier Automata. Great content as always guys!
direct was great! I am really excited about Nier, autumn looks fantastic for switch! I was also so happy to see Portal released. this is a very curious action in behalf of Valve, dipping their toes in Switch despite having their own portable system. Maybe this is a testing ground before porting Half Life and Left 4 Dead? well... bring them on!
A bit of a late comment, but I have to say that I'm really excited about how the games look. I actually never played the portal games originally. Funny story, but I was actually having a chat with a friend of mine about what games it'd be cool to have on switch (this was about a week before this collection was announced) and I brought this up, so it was a nice surprise! He also thought that it'd be cool to have some of the fallout or metal gear solid games remastered as well, though I don't think that's happening any time soon.
Not a Portal fan but at least for those that are, they can expect a decent port for their enjoyment at a good price. I am difficult to impress with these Directs. Most games were already known and the new ones I had no interest in. Live A Live is really the only game I'm looking forward to but I already knew it was releasing. The highlight for me was that the trailers used ACTUAL GAMEPLAY footage instead of some created 3D animation so high praise for that.
I'm loving this game. Played it on another platform before, and am definitely enjoying it on Switch. I don't remember the other versions having the pause/hitch in the first game that occurs just before exiting the elevator into each new room, though. That kind of pulls me out of the game for the few seconds that it takes to load the new level and save the game. I wish the devs had found a way for the music to continue while it happens, rather than feeling and sounding like a game freeze. Still, it's a minor inconvenience for having these two gems on the Switch. Great review.
@@allthis701 Thanks for the info. The "freezing while loading" thing is still kind of annoying, but it's relatively minor, and I'm glad to know it's not just a Switch version thing. That way I can look at it as part of the "charm" of playing an older game, and not a problem that arose from devs not doing the best possible port. Appreciate the comment.
@@nicked_fenyx Yeah Source just wasn't made for large worlds or much on-the-go streaming of data like modern game engines are, so it just had to improvise. The port seems pretty fantastic in general.
so i’ve been playing this game for years and picked it up on the switch and got the same network bug you mentioned. i figured out that it only occurred when making progress towards an achievement (ie breaking one of wheatley’s screens) or when the game auto saves. the issue was fixed in later playthroughs after i got every achievement
I never got into Portal when I was a PC Gamer, but I've got so many friends who raved about it - it's wonderful to see it's been ported - and ported to well - to the Switch! There were some great titles in that Indie Direct - Blanc looks amazing - I'm really loving everything Annapurna is putting out, from Neon White to Sayonara Wild Hearts so Lorelei and the Laser Eyes has piqued my interest - and NieR: Automata will be huge - but the big one for me was Harvestella. It sure makes HD2D look like crap, doesn't it?

Good direct, better than what most people were predicting. With huge sale on in the US I’m probably going to wait on portal but will get it eventually.

Portal 1 and 2 will neuer release. Only the bundle. On the e-shop, you can click on the different games only to see information. I am sure

I've never played the second one but man I love the first! Might be one of my all-time favorites, and I don't usually like puzzle games. It's a definite grab for me.
You're in for an absolute treat. :) Although Portal was an amazing game at release it doesn't even come close to Portal 2. When revisiting Portal it almost feels like a proof-of-concept or demo in comparison to what Portal 2 offers. It's very creative and probably has one of the funniest and most absurd storylines in any video game. :D
I've played both games about 30 times each on PC, Xbox360 and Xbox Series S and also finished both games today and I can confidently say that the ports are perfect, sans some minor framerate dips below 60 in the giant areas of Portal 2 right after placing a portal

The characters in these games are unmatchable. Not a single dull line or moment.

Really enjoyed the direct, tons of interesting announcement for me. That was quick guys!! Was waiting for reviews on performance for this, also i dont know if you know the exc rate but it's really cheap on the mexican shop, 250 MXN are around 11 USD or 10 GBP.
I played through both of these games on the Xbox 360 so I'm not in any hurry to re-buy them, but I'll definitely be wishlist'ing it for a good sale down the line.
About the Mini Direct, I was disappointed. The primary reason being that it was focused on third party games when it's mainly first party games I'm interested in info or announcements on. I'm of course talking about games like Bayonetta 3, Splatoon 3, the next wave of Mario Kart 8 tracks, the rumored Metroid Prime remaster, and so on. That isn't to say there weren't a few bright spot for me though. I've got MHR Sunbreak digitally preordered on the eShop so the title update notes were cool. The Live-A-Live demo drop was cool as that's a game I'm interested in somewhat. I thought Blanc looked neat as I'm a sucker for puzzle platformers and cute animals. Nier Automata was a pleasant surprise. The Persona ports were a nice closing announcement, even though rumors kind of foreshadowed it.
No Silksong update after a showing in Xbox's event was the omission that bummed me out the most. I've been under the impression Hollow Knight outsold every other platform on the Switch, so why it would get first mention (after the radio silence) for Xbox is curious.
I wish reviews like this included possible plans for a future physical release. Other than that, nice review.

I've missed Glados!! Only played Portal 2 & it's still my fav game. Didn't think it would drop until later this year. So hyped!! Can't wait to co-op w/my best friend.

I have had perfect internet connection too an was getting that internet pop up every time I went to a new level in portal 2, but besides that these games are running perfectly for me! Portal 2 is my favorite game of all time and it’s so nice to finally be able to play it on the go!
That internet box thing has been popping up for me during ori and the will of the wisps over the last couple of days also. I'm wondering if its a bug on the latest switch firmware?
I wish they'd make more 7th gen remasters and ports for Switch.

These were my two favorite games of the 7th generation. They might just be perfect video games in my eyes. Have not played Portal 2 since around 2014 on my PS3 version and have not played Portal 1 for at least 10 years on my 360 copy of The Orange Box. So yes, I bought these immediately on my switch
I remember getting into Portal in 2019, this already gives me nostalgia.
WOW!!! Now I just need Half Life 1 and 2 , and Dead Space Trilogy... I think I'll be set on Favorite series coming to Switch at that point... Maybe just the Metal Gear games...

Think Portal 2 is one of my favourite games of all time; if you never played it do; very funny with merchant as well 10/10.
One of the best games of all time, now portable!, Valve had already ported (no pun intended) Portal 1 to the Switch SoC (Tegra X1) when they ported (no pun intended again lmao) Portal 1 & Half Life 2 to Android for the Nvidia Shield.
So they had it as an option for a long time ago, so great having these in the switch, it is really tempting me up to get an Oled Switch, but I gotta resist the urge lmao.
I'm new to Portal. My son played back in the day. Do I need to be on-line to play the single player game or only for multi-player. Thanks.
Now there’s no reason for Valve not to release the rest of the Orange Box. Half Life, 2 and Episodes 1 & 2. You know it makes sense Valve!!!
Now if we can get Half Life 1 & 2 with all dlc for the same price as this collection, I would be very appreciative.

This direct was great for me. A lot to be excited about. We got to see variants coming in MHRise Sunbreak, I'm so excited about the Megaman Battle Network collection, Nier Automata, and lots of other games that look cool (Blanc, Pac Man World, Persona)

Quick question, the whole "phoning home" thing, where it checks whether or not you are online, do you have a review/pre-release copy? It could be possible that's the reason why. I'm tempted to purchase but I think that's fair too intrusive and an annoyance that seems like a bug not a feature. If it isn't because you have a review/pre-release copy, I do hope it gets fixed. It's likely I won't hear about it getting fixed as this'll go under my radar, but I guess they'll get my money eventually rather than right away (if it does get fixed).
I didn’t even know there was dev commentary on these versions… I CANNOT wait to play through these games again even more now!! I never finished Portal 1 since I had a hard time fighting the final boss. This time?? Gonna do it!
Never played the Portal games and will definitely get them. The direct was great. Blanc, Portal, the Mega Man Battle network collection, that Annapurna game with PS1 aesthetic. Even the Pac Man game looked fun. Oh and I looooove shadow drops, my gargantuan backlog and wallet not so much.
I can't wait to experience these games for the first time, I've been waiting so long for them to come to Switch
Portal was one of my first proper video games, definitely gonna get this on the Switch, there's no nostalgia (because I keep consistently replaying it) but it'd be good to have it on the go!
I had little to no expectations for the mini direct but i'm so happy! Finally persona 3, 4 and 5 are coming to Switch I have been waiting for years. I really hope there will be physical editions but glad to finally get them on the Switch. Also really excited for more DQ and Nier Automata. Great content as always guys!
It's $20 for Portal 1 + 2, games with the most unique way to solve puzzles and tasteful (and dark) humor. What more do you need to know?

direct was great! I am really excited about Nier, autumn looks fantastic for switch! I was also so happy to see Portal released. this is a very curious action in behalf of Valve, dipping their toes in Switch despite having their own portable system. Maybe this is a testing ground before porting Half Life and Left 4 Dead? well... bring them on!
A bit of a late comment, but I have to say that I'm really excited about how the games look. I actually never played the portal games originally. Funny story, but I was actually having a chat with a friend of mine about what games it'd be cool to have on switch (this was about a week before this collection was announced) and I brought this up, so it was a nice surprise! He also thought that it'd be cool to have some of the fallout or metal gear solid games remastered as well, though I don't think that's happening any time soon.
Not a Portal fan but at least for those that are, they can expect a decent port for their enjoyment at a good price. I am difficult to impress with these Directs. Most games were already known and the new ones I had no interest in. Live A Live is really the only game I'm looking forward to but I already knew it was releasing. The highlight for me was that the trailers used ACTUAL GAMEPLAY footage instead of some created 3D animation so high praise for that.
I'm loving this game. Played it on another platform before, and am definitely enjoying it on Switch. I don't remember the other versions having the pause/hitch in the first game that occurs just before exiting the elevator into each new room, though. That kind of pulls me out of the game for the few seconds that it takes to load the new level and save the game. I wish the devs had found a way for the music to continue while it happens, rather than feeling and sounding like a game freeze. Still, it's a minor inconvenience for having these two gems on the Switch. Great review.
It was the same on PC, also HL2 had the same thing. It's just loading the next area and saving the progress.
@@allthis701 Thanks for the info. The "freezing while loading" thing is still kind of annoying, but it's relatively minor, and I'm glad to know it's not just a Switch version thing. That way I can look at it as part of the "charm" of playing an older game, and not a problem that arose from devs not doing the best possible port. Appreciate the comment.
@@nicked_fenyx Yeah Source just wasn't made for large worlds or much on-the-go streaming of data like modern game engines are, so it just had to improvise. The port seems pretty fantastic in general.
Never played portal before, but I now have the game on the switch and plan to start today.
so i’ve been playing this game for years and picked it up on the switch and got the same network bug you mentioned. i figured out that it only occurred when making progress towards an achievement (ie breaking one of wheatley’s screens) or when the game auto saves. the issue was fixed in later playthroughs after i got every achievement
Never played either one before but just bought this before looking at this review so I’m super excited with only playing the first 9 rooms
I never got into Portal when I was a PC Gamer, but I've got so many friends who raved about it - it's wonderful to see it's been ported - and ported to well - to the Switch!
There were some great titles in that Indie Direct - Blanc looks amazing - I'm really loving everything Annapurna is putting out, from Neon White to Sayonara Wild Hearts so Lorelei and the Laser Eyes has piqued my interest - and NieR: Automata will be huge - but the big one for me was Harvestella. It sure makes HD2D look like crap, doesn't it?

Is it only online multiplayer that requires a nintendo online subscription? You mentioned in the video it gives warnings if you are not connected to the internet, does that mean you need nintendo online to play single player?

Good direct, better than what most people were predicting. With huge sale on in the US I’m probably going to wait on portal but will get it eventually.
I can’t wait to finally play this actually. I hate puzzle games but this has aged brilliantly and I have heard nothing but good things about it.

Can you play coop using 2 Switches without a switch online subscription? Works just fine in Dying Light for example.
I had the internet issue as well. Closing software and rebooting seems to have fixed it
