For factory ammo, if you can't find 280AI you can chamber and shoot 280 Rem. Then reload this brass with 280AI dies. If you're not worried about correct head stamps you can run 30-06 brass through your 280AI dies and make brass for your 280AI.
Damn Whoot , I'm glad you finally got a .280AI. I've been shooting mine for a long time and love it. That round just seems to work very well. Very good BC as well as SD. Not punishing on the shoulder and it will take ANYTHING North America has to offer. Just a sweet round....congrats brother and another great video that we can all relate to. Looking forward to more vids...thx again.
Great video. I know you have your own way of doing things but I always clean and properly lube my guns when I first get them home. Most guns come with preservative oil in the bore and who knows what kind of dust and grit could have gotten into it during shipping.
The 280AI is a handloader’s dream! Great range of 7mm pills. I’ve really been enjoying your videos of late Hooty. Then again they have always been enjoyable to watch. Thanks for sharing! 👊🏻

My younger brother switched to 280AI because he injured his shoulder and after recovering found that the 300WM was too much recoil. He bought a 280AI Savage and said it worked good, better on recoil, accurate, and laid the smack down on game. I was happy to see Savage bring it back out. Look up the info in your load manual or online and you will see the numbers. It if a great cartridge. I do not have one, but I do not need any more bolt actions.
I’ve been using the .280 AI since the early 90’s. Always hard hitting yet soft on the shoulder. In recent years, I’ve used it to take Coues deer at long ranges, and in Africa to take kudu, oryx, impala, springbok and bushbuck. I average 2850 fps with the Barnes 160 gr. LRX and it’s a deadly combination.
In 2006 I built a 280AI out of an old Pre 64 model 70 used a PacNor barrel with a Jewel trigger on a McMillian stock. Started with 140 ballistic tips then 140 Accubond then 150 Long range Accubond but now I am a fan of Barnes LRX. It like Reloader 22 & IMR4831 the best but will shoot all in the same burn range. I have taken it from Mexico to Africa .
Thanks for the video man. Love my 280 Ackley improved I have the weatherby 307 range xp with the tan speckle stock I’m shooting weatherby factory ammo as of right now with the hammer bullets. I will be hand loading for it as well with 145 lrx or some 168 accu bond long range bullets. I’ve always been told the 162 to 168 grain bullet weight is the sweet spot for 280 ackley. Thanks again man keep up the good work God bless
Now that's a badass Rifle! 🤙🏻👍🏻 Ackley Improved Cartages are friggin AWESOME! I mainly have Gas Guns but I do have a couple Bolt Guns and my most loved one is a 25.06 Ackley Improved and that thing is an awesome White Tail Round.
And also for factory loads, Hornady 162g eldx is well under 3/4 MOA for me. But the push on these ammo manufacturers to produce more this caliber is working! Nosler, Hornady, and Federal are throwing more out there on the shelves
Running a patch through a new bore ensures that you won't be surprised by some debris that snuck into the barrel between when it was made and when you got it. I recently found a piece of crud half-way down the barrel of a lovely new-in-the-box Sako S20. Bore snake took it out. Rifle shot 5/8" at 100 yards. No unpleasantly surprises.
Just get the 307 Weatherby Hush Edition. I have a LAW Professional II, too bad they went out of business shortly after I had it made. Good luck, and stay safe!!! 😉😉😉
I like the 280 AI, but I’m a 7mag fan. I’ve never had one, but have shot them. I don’t need another bolt action rifle, but I sure like this 307 Weatherby.
I'm building my own 280 AI with the Weatherby model 307 builders action. I'm almost finished with it, I just got my Criterion barrel and I have to get it installed which that won't take long because it's a Remage barrel with the barrel nut. 280 AI is a top tier cartridge!
The 280 used to be called the 7mm express. The 280 AI is a 280 on steroids. I do remember some having issues with burning the rifling up with the Ackley if they didn't let the barrel cool. Things might be better these days.
Break-in routines are stupid. I agree, just shoot the friggen thing and the barrel will last for many thousands of rounds. You might clean it straight up just in case there's some cosmoline or something in the barrel, but it won't be there after a few shots anyway. If it's shootin' good, leave it alone. There's nothin you can do to a hammer forged barrel that's going to do it any good, and over use of some cleaning solvents could actually be quite bad.
In AK I was most impressed with Weatherby small bore rifles . I got to load some . A guy I worked with bought a 338-378 Weatherby I didnt have slow enough powder .
Pretty awesome rifle and one of the cartridges that I am interested in as an option to fit in between my 270 Win and 300 WSM. The only problem is it’s like my 300 WSM with very scarce and expensive factory ammo. Thankfully 😅 I can reload but it’s nice to have factory options especially when going out of state 3-4 states away for a hunt just in case. The HUSH guys are nice. It's ridiculously expensive to purchase these brand name rifles here in Canada. They appear inexpensive in the US and when it comes to exchange rate and taxes the price blows up not to mention I believe Cabelas does mark them up as well. So a 800usd gun looks like 1300 or 1400 cda
