  • In this video, I tackle the dirty smoky Dreamcast from "It's Mail Day 4". This thing is covered with smoke damage and stains. Sorry about the long length of this, but it took alot of work, and there was just a lot of content to include. I had to re-upload this, there was an issue with the first video.

    Thats been in a house fire, baby! Telltale sign with smoke and some water damage (ive cleaned out a PS1 with smoke damage from a house fire clean up, and got it mostly working, the whole CD platter had to be replaced)
    Plus dont hate on the bloke for a busted laser, if he can get it that good after what its been through, then job well done. You did well, Champ.

    For future reference, you should clean the carbon/smoke damage from all the pcb's as it can become conductive if electricity is introduced, im surprised the dreamcast didn't short out on you when you turned it on, stroke of luck to be totally honest, but just to be safe.

  • @FaSMaN

    Leaving that much soot (carbon) on a PSU is extremely dangerous , please give it a alcohol bath in some 99% Iso, dont rest it in the bath for more than 2 minutes, followed by scrubbing it gently with a toothbrush, rinsing it in alcohol again, and leave it outside for a day or two to dry, carbon is conductive and it will arch especially the high voltage side, you can even do the same for the motherboard and controller ports.

      Well, if there's enough carbon, it will simply act like a massive resistor and any short circuits along a tiny path will heat the surrounding carbon, connecting those particles, creating a large "surface trace" and simply get hotter, if left plugged in too long it may cause the socket to melt due to heat or trip the breaker due to the massive load or short, which is far more likely than melting the socket. Housing wiring doesn't fail that badly unless something is already wrong with them.

    That Dreamcast was in a house fire that was later put out by the fire department using water. That would explain the soot all over the unit and the square shape on top which was probably caused when a book of some kind was left on top and the fire commenced. The rust spots, not being many and isolated, are caused by the water used to put out the blaze. Dude you got a burnt Dreamcast. BUMMER!

    you can clean most electronics with water (do note that water with more particulates IS more conductive and the following wont work) you need to then let the device COMPLETELY dry, for instance, completely disassemble and leave in a dry area leaving plenty of space between components and waiting AT LEAST 12 hours, 24 to be safe, the more complex the device may require some slight alchohol rinse to remove ANY particulates left over, as simpler circuits typically have enough space between contacts to provide too much resistance to be conductive enough to worry about.
    again, water doesn't destroy electronics, its when you use water and keep power running through the circuit that it causes a problem (capacitors should be taken into account as well)

    All that much smoke looks like it was sitting near a grill for years, or some garage with Diesel machines coming and going.
    Sometimes I find it interesting to make up theories about how was the life and storage of these used machines and what happened to them

    • @MrKillswitch88
      @MrKillswitch88 6 лет назад +4

      What likely happened was that the console is a survivor from a house or apartment fire and smoked up while it still had power as just sitting the soot wouldn't have deposited so heavily on the inside of the machine. The internal boards need to be cleaned including the psu due to the carbon buildup.

    • @RetroRepairs
      @RetroRepairs  6 лет назад +2

      The interesting part. Is that the p1 controller port was so full of smoke residue that you couldn't connect a controller. So the fan sucked the smoke in, but no controller attached? It's just odd

      Well you probably have never experienced a house fire but I have and from my own experience shit does happen, I lost a home once to arson because some fucktard decided to do someone a "favor" and nearly got four peopled killed. • @RetroRepairs
      @RetroRepairs  6 лет назад +2

    • @Kalvinjj
      @Kalvinjj 6 лет назад +1

      Whoa it became quite a topic while I was out!
      I bet more on something a lot less tragic, like the sitting besides the coal grill. I've repaired and just opened up for fun quite a lot of stuff, and with kitchen stuff, you can really get grease on components that never saw light in their working life after assembled.
      For example a portable tube TV I got from my neighbors once, was sitting on the kitchen shelf for years unused, it was easy to clean the outside of the TV, but the inside was amazingly greasy as well, even tho it was sitting unused with no forced ventilation through it.
      I specially bet more on the grill or garage theory, because you can't see some specifically big accumulation of soot around the fan (where it would make sense to have), but anywhere near ventilation grills there is it, and specially, it has a lot inside the CD/GD drive as well. The top of the device can be cleaned with some cloth to remove the worst parts, but the inside was left as-is by the user trying to get rid of it.
      Well, that's at least my bet on the story.

    I have a couple ideas to share for the next smoky project, albeit I can't predict how well they'd work. They're tactics I use when I'm fixing a car to flip that work well for paint, glass, and plastics for me. The first thing I can't say enough good things for is micro fiber towels. I'd wager they could have scrubbed off most of that crap with less effort. When it comes to cleaning glass, I don't even use soapy anything anymore. Just clean, hot water works with the towels. When I still need something with grit, I'm fond of 3M Perfect It II rubbing compound. I'll use it shamelessly on plastics as much as I do paint. 3M also has a plastic polishing compound that you can tell is just an even finer rubbing compound. A dab of either on your micro fiber towel would have probably done fine on that case. I can't say for sure how destructive they might be to those imprinted logos, though. The plastic polishing compound might be more appropriate for your work. I hope I gave you something helpful.

    For the record or future reference: the magic eraser (Melamine foam) is only mildly abrasive, and far from "basically sandpaper". Using it with rubbing alcohol isn't the most efficient way, as it works better with a detergent which acts as a surfactant, such as common household dishwashing liquid, to both add lubricity and to move the contaminants from the surface. Also, an ultrasonic cleaner works wonders for getting into the tighter areas, and can be had for a reasonable sum of money

    • @RetroRepairs
      @RetroRepairs  6 лет назад

      That's fair. The main point was that it's not "magic" or a special chemical, it works by grinding away at debris. They will still take a logo clean off a system if you're not careful.

    You should clean the metal bars on the laser assembly and lube them up sparingly with silicone grease, oil is ok but will attract dust which will clog it up. Nice work on the cleaning process, you should definitely try to retro bright it to see if you can obtain it back to a pearly white.

  • @ErroneousClique

    Dreamcast controller port faults where all the ports stop working is *usually* due to the resistor fuse (smaller aqua colored resistor looking component on the controller port PCB) being blown. Simple fix to just desoldier the old and soldier in the new resistor fuse. Dont cheap out and replace it with a regular 1/4watt 10ohm resistor as that will remove the protection. Always replace resistor fuses with resistor fuses of the exact same rating, never a plain old resistor.

    • @RetroRepairs
      @RetroRepairs  6 лет назад

      ErroneousClique correct. This one actually tested fine however, so I did not replace the fuse

    • @Kalvinjj
      @Kalvinjj 6 лет назад +2

      ~or replace with a blob of solder~
      hehe just kidding but yeah... done that. Not proud of, but it's sometimes hard to ever find some correct sized fuse (even worse the specific rating). When they're the tiny SMD types for low current you'll usually not make some time-bomb if it fails, but sure will blow some stuff in case it does (usually some IC burns, but rarely something like shorting battery and making a fire hazard).

    That much smoke damage needs to be cleaned off of every component. It will act as a thermal insulator and possibly make connection shorts. You can clean the soot off with rubbing alcohol or just water. As long as the boards and components are completely and thoroughly dry, it should be fine. You can actually put a motherboard in a dishwasher, let it dry for a week, and it will work fine.

    I think the laser itself is damaged. Normally the laser will move up and down until it finds a focus on the spinning disc, and once it does, it will start moving forwards and back to read certain sectors and stuff.
    You can test this by pushing(carefully) the laser part back and seeing if it returns to it's normal front position on power on.

As a bit of a "do what I can before discarding" electronics person with a fair bit of electronics and soldering history, I just wanted to offer a small bit of last ditch effort advice. I know it may sound worrisome, but HEY, you're about to condemn the laser anyhow! I find that if you "manually" push the laser down it's track with a slotted (flathead) precision screwdriver (to fit between the lasers primary location and the laser mechs body) it often gives a bit of a jar, and will return to it's home location and resolve the issue, and if not, hey whatever, its more than worth a shot! ;) Just subscribed. You could try glassfiber brush on those hard to reach places. But as with the magic eraser, it's hard on surfaces so don't go too hard for too long.

    You can put pcbs in the dishwasher. Just turn of the dry cycle and let the board air dry for a week. I can't think how else you'll get that soot off without nasty chemicals.

    Hey Adam, I truly enjoy all of your videos, I’ve learned so much. I have a quick question that you might know or anyone else here on your channel. I have a Sega Dreamcast that I got off Ebay(fixer upper) and it came with the wrong case screws. Do you know what size/type I would need to get to match the original?

    • @RetroRepairs

      jeepnII I believe they are 12mm #2 philips screws. I found that listed on some teardown instructions, so it may or may not be accurate. I don't have a good way to measure the threads,

    I usually do one screw at a time and drop them into my hand, never thought of a towel not sure how much easier it would make it, but seeing has you only have to flip it once with a towel it might be a more logical way to do instead of flipping it four times

    Push the lazer to the farthest point back on it's rails, and then see if it starts working, it looks like it may have just been pushed too far forward on the rails for the teeth to grab.

    This looks like a Dreamcast model 2. I’ve repaired a model 1 before and it looks very different from that when it comes to RF shields and GDR drive
    Edit: no wait they’re the same I fell asleep at 25 minute mark and woke up when you were inspecting the GDR drive. Me falling asleep doesn’t mean your video is boring It was 3AM and my eyes were heavy.

    Lithium grease the bars on the laser assembly and clean those boards with isopropanol. I'd go as far as to clean up the fan and all the other areas with a Qtip and say glass cleaner. Looking forward to seeing how faryou get with restoring the laser, and if you find a supply of replacement lasers then please share.

    Thermal paste? There’s two thermal pads, not paste, one on top of the CPU and GPU.
    There’s also two smaller thermal pads (seen in the video) on the underside of the CPU and GPU on the bottom half of the RF shielding, protecting two smaller chips underneath each of the main components.
    You could have lifted that top RF shielding plate no problem to inspect the motherboard. Would have been interesting to see how it fared.

    I am surprised that fan isn't louder than what it is, or your camera's audio is not picking it up. It would definitely be worth doing the silent fan mod, and psu replacement mod for that unit. The psu I have seen far less do far more damage and with how much dust and smoke damage is there I would worry about it being a fire hazard on its own at that point. isopropyl alcohol to the max with that board but its still high risk unfortunately.

    I have a PS2 that seems to work fine, other than the fact that it won't load games past the logos, and *barely* plays DVDs. I was wondering if the disc reader could be fried or if there was something else going on? I was going to just sell it, however I still have some games that I'd like to play again. (*Cough* FFVII)

    • @RetroRepairs
      @RetroRepairs  5 лет назад

      Good chance it's the disc laser. I've had issues with every ps2 I've owned, some read better than others, or just not at all

  • @valmontdraconus

    I love Dreamcast. Under rated system IMHO. I think it deserved more attention.
    I bought one brand new for cheap and I enjoyed playing a few games on it. I made the mistake of letting someone borrow it that I thought was a friend. I never got it back. I'm certain he sold it for drugs or to repay someone he owed money to.
    A few years later I bought one off ebay for $20 and it came with a few games, controllers, etc. Seller told me it powered up but it had trouble reading games. Most lasers can be tweaked or replaced, and I've done it before, so that's pretty much what I expected. Funny thing is that when I got it and checked it out I had no trouble playing any games at all. What luck.
    Some of my fav DC games have since been ported to newer consoles (Jet Set Radio is one) but there is 1 game I love from my time playing DC that I wish would get a modern port and that's Record of Lodoss War.

    • @RetroRepairs
      @RetroRepairs  5 лет назад +1

      Dreamcast was an awesome system. Too bad Sega made some bad decisions leading up to it that it never really had a chance. Heck, we never saw the display in a controller again until the wiiu, or i guess technically the ds had a secondary display too

    • @valmontdraconus
      @valmontdraconus 5 лет назад

      @@RetroRepairs DC was easy to pirate games, which I feel may be one of the reasons it failed.
      I enjoyed the VMU, but dealing with batteries was ridiculous when you found a fun minigame. Playstation 1 had a VMU as well, but it never released outside of Japan, despite initially being promoted for Final Fantasy 8 stateside.

    • @RetroRepairs
      @RetroRepairs  5 лет назад

      There were a few bigger reasons for it failing. One, it had to compete with the PS2, which to this date remains the top selling console of all time. (Plus it came with a DVD player, which was expensive at the time)
      But Sega was super dysfunctional, especially the relationship between Sega of America and Sega of Japan. Goes back to the Genesis and 32x. Long story short, they launched the 32x in North America with moderate success, but Sega of Japan had been secretly accelerating development of the Saturn and announced it shortly after the 32x was released. This killed the 32x here, as why buy one when a real console was just around the corner. Then the saturn dropped in 95, was discontinued in 98, Dreamcast came in 99, and by that time, Sega had released the Sega CD, 32x, saturn and dreamcast all in the span of 7 years. People were getting annoyed that their new console or add-on was becoming obsolete so quickly.

    • @valmontdraconus
      @valmontdraconus 5 лет назад

      @@RetroRepairs Might just be my opinion but I think the 32X had amazing potential that definitely was never realized.
      I agree about Sega being kinda dysfunctional. 2 different Genesis models. 2 different Sega CD models. 32X. Then Saturn's incredibly short life span and Sega's refusal to bring over certain games (Like the rest of Shining Force 3)
      I'm feeling really nostalgic here. I had a lot of good times on Sega consoles back in the day, and there are still games I have yet to play that I hope get ported one day.

    • @RetroRepairs
      @RetroRepairs  5 лет назад

      The different types of models is nothing new though. All major systems except the n64 have done it. There was a toploader NES, SNES jr. Wii mini, PSOne, PS2 slim, xbox one x/s, ps4 pro.
      But you're right, had the 32x been given a chance, i think it could have done fairly well. Unfortunately it launched in North America first, then sega of Japan announced the Saturn would be coming much sooner, and essentially made it DOA.

  • @crzyzeldafanatic

    @RetroRepairs when I got my Dreamcast it would not read games. I thought the laser was dead as well because there was no red laser like a normal disk drive. Appearently if you didn't know this already Dreamcast do not have visible lasers so when j found that I was able to do a POT tweak and it instantly started reading disk and have had no problems since. Figured I would share that information with you.

    If I got it in this state, there would be no mercy for parts you can't see. I would just clean everything as much as I can without damaging it. If nothing else, depending on part, paper towel, toothbrush,... and alcohol.
    And I really wonder what happened with that console... I mean was it like:
    Mom: Run out! House is on fire!
    Son: Mom, leave me alone, I am playing games!
    Mom: Fuck this shit...
    Mom gives up and runs out.
