  • The Centre for Environmental History at the Australian National University hosts the Annual Robin-Griffiths Lecture in Environmental History. This lecture honours the Centre's founders, Prof. Libby Robin and Prof. Tom Griffiths, who have so generously fostered the field of environmental history and cultivated a community of scholars.
The `Inaugural Lecture was presented on 8 Dec. 2022 by Prof. Katie Holmes, Professor of History and co-director of the Centre for the Study of the Inland at La Trobe University. This lecture, titled 'About the Birds and the Trees: Reading Robin and Griffiths and writing environmental history', reflects on the legacies of two foundational figures for the field of environmental history and draws on Prof. Holmes' ongoing research into the water cultures of Victoria's north-west. Focusing on Hattah-Kulkyne National Park, she finds evidence of deep-time history; campaigns to protect the birds, the trees and the water; and an array of characters whose passionate engagement with this place created a shared sense of wonder and meaning, and a firm belief that this Country was to be cherished and protected.
