Hi Sophie, watches are usually four hours long, with one crew working and the other off watch. The dog watches are two hour watches, the first dog is from 16:00 to 18:00 and then the off watch crew take the second dog from 1800: to 20:00. Watches then resume four hours on , four hours off. The purpose of dog watches it to swap the routine so that each crew works different watches on consecutive days. The purpose is to keep crews alert and not become complacent with the same watch times every day ;)
Yup I have an espresso machine. Ironically the espresso maker uses more current than the windlass. 160 amps😳 but with Lithium batteries that’s a breeze
Lol, Burnie Cay...always turning a negative into a positive. 👍👍👍 I do believe that video will truly help the community. They may reconsider how they are cooking/working with hot material next time. Great job!!!
Hi Sophie, just to let you know the Dog watch is 1600 to 2000 divided into 2, two hour watches (4 to 6 and 6 to 8)Known as the first dog watch and the second dog watch. This is set up to allow both watches to eat dinner. The midnight to 0400 is called the Mid’s. Love the shows keep it up
I watch these vlogs to get an idea how I would, or will, do them. I particularly like yours because I sail like Ryan..a bit nervous and uptight. ( not criticizing) Although I won't be doing Patreon..everybody likes to be liked..so it was nice to see the captain's sensitive and joyful side. It was a good reminder to myself...that it's good to relax and open up....un clench those butt cheeks!! Good job, very enjoyable channel!
Good to see that you wear your safety gear. 👏 💜So many on you tubers do not think about this aspect of open water sailing. I was watching another sailing channel & they just purchased a new very cool Emergency locater type device. if one of the crew did have a man over board situation, an alarm would go off & then the other crew could immediately turn the boat to exactly where the man over board was because the exact location would appear on their navigation computer page much like how another boat appears on the navigation computer page. When it’s flat out, it’s not an problem to find the man over board, however, if the seas are choppy or large & strong currents, it could be a major problem locating the man over board. Maybe, the company would sponsor you guys & give you the device for free or at a deep discount. Just do a search. Looking forward to your next island. Hope you have better winds!! 🍀Cheers from Florida!! 🌴🌴 ps also love that you keep with the nautical tradition of displaying the proper flags on the boat. So many boats now a days sadly have let this tradition go. 🇫🇮🇮🇹🇵🇹🇸🇪🇪🇸🇺🇸🇫🇷
The Ocean Signal MOB device? We have them! Have had them since the beginning, they are inside of our lifejacket and we’ve tested them :) ruclips.net/video/OojbkKVQrI0/видео.html /Sophie
Our auto pilot, also a Raymarine, started doing weird stuff just after we bought the boat. It would try to join races and head for the beach. We found that the fluxgate compass was sharing a compartment with a spare alternator, a sander, a drill, an angle grinder and a dremel kit. Once the tools were removed the autopilot resumed worked just fine, and we found the previous owners stash of equipment which doesn't work here because it is 110v and we have 240v.
You 2 are obviously tech savvy with your diy watermaker and lifepo4 battery system. You may want to move beyond the 'Raymarine' budget electronics systems to something a bit better for Polar Seal. Especially with your autopilot. I realize that equipment from Simrad and Garmin costs more but you do get what you pay for.......
I think I don’t exagerate when I say, that every sailing channel has at least once a month an issue with the autopilot. And every time I love the windvane steering more and more. It needs a few minutes to set the course, but it doesn’t need electricity, it’s easy to repair, makes no noise while steering (this beep, beep, ...)
Ryan, speaking of night time and solar panels, there has been a decent amount of research in that area. There other types of light that we don't see and it's thought that we may be able to harness power from that light with a different design panel. I haven't looked into it for a long time to see the progress, but it's an interesting theory.
What a pleasant and mostly bright-eyed and full of smiles vlog episode !! I mean, even Ryan got a bit 'ocean silly' which was fun. Happy your burnie cay is doing well !! 👍💜👍😀
We have a Raymarine autopilot on our boat and despite loading the latest firmware, it also does the occasional crazy Ivan. If you are looking at the screen at the time, it is performing some random reset function before it sorts itself out.
@@RyanSophieSailing I am interested to see if you get one of the new Raymarine controllers with the gyro sensors in it, and if it integrates with the existing system. The gyro's are supposed to factor in behaviour when the boat heels over or when it is surfing down a wave.
Hello, The courtesy flag is the country flag you fly on starboard, showing the country you are currently visiting. It shows that you are prepared to follow the laws of that country. On the port side, the flag you are flying is called the "Private signal", and shows the nationality of the owner when on board, or the Captain sometimes. (That is why, if we were really pedantic about flag etiquette, you really should be flying only one "Private signal"). Hope that helps.
I think it is actually called a Swedish watch schedule, requires more than two people and staggers overlapping watches (2 on, but one of those will change partway through, others off) which is the minimal schedule that ensures every crew gets one "great sleep" of 6 hours off in every day. With a crew of 4, that may actually make 23 or 25 hour "days". Requires m a t h to set up but everyone stays really refreshed, and your watch partners keep changing.
Check Georges electrical connection. I had a similar problem with my autopilot and it came dow to the thing momentarily turning itself of and then back on due to a loose connection
..... can well imagine that it would be disconcerting when your autopilot gets a mind of it's own, OK, so have not been on the water since my parents had a boat, first thought was is there something metallic near the compass that with the motion sways back and forth, just a thought, ..... remember a very tense Ryan when the radar was just an expensive piece of equipment that did nothing when you were in the fog last year, also remember that he was a changed man when the decision had been made to upgrade the said equipment ... glad you are enjoying the benefits of your decision .... you sure are having some beautiful weather, even with the heavy dew at night .... good to see that you are healing Sophie, hope the healing doesn't leave a scar, I have several scars and have learnt to live with them, would much preferred to not have them, and would not have had to have them if I knew then what I know now ..... Going to Paris are you, sounds like there should be coffee and pastries ... so is it the coffee and pastries, or the atmosphere of the sidewalk cafe's and the hustle and bustle .... . have not been to Paris in a long time .... always enjoy the energy in your videos .... have fun be safe, save our oceans ..... peter ....
Hi, as Ryan, I had an hallucination with the moon when I crosse Biscay a few weeks ago. I thought it was a sail boat close to me. I checked the AIS but nothing. I am publishing those video currently on my Channel. With english subtitle. Tomorrow I will publish the night. Enjoy the wind ans take care Cyril
Hahaha! So funny, just like our first encounters with the moon! Happened to me between Gibraltar and Almerimar last year, with a moonrise STRAIGHT in front of me 😂 /Sophie
Awesome video! You guys are really down to earth people, and Sophie, you're 2x down to earth, not many ladies preferred to be filmed right just getting out of bed, sleepy face and not made up, though natural beauty needs no makeup. At least the watches were in nearly dead calm seas. Kudos to both. Fair winds!
Haha :) Thanks Mo! I am totally fine being in front of the camera in almost all situations, it’s life! We all wake up in the morning looking... well, like our good old morning selves. Nothing to be ashamed of :) /Sophie
Oh my you both looked like death warmed over for that first night watch change out at midnight and 4am. Sophie you looked much better on the second sunrise watch. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets! A great passage! Fair Winds Sophie and Ryan!
With the problems of George wandering around in circles and becoming unreliable, I'd check your stores of Rum and booze and make sure that it's all accounted for.
Hahaha! I’m an egg and soldier type of person ;) and Ryan makes the best “soft-but-not-runny boiled eggs”! I was very happy with my breakfast that day 😊 /Sophie

Yes we don't want any burns on those gorgeous legs;-)
Very refreshing to see Ryan enjoying himself.
Love Ryan's Dad dancing 🥳😀Sail safe guys. Ant, Cid and the pooch crew xx

Better to look like a pirate map than Burnie Sanders (American Politician).

Guess Ryan's night time reflective moon solar was a bust, but only a smart guy could imagine the possibility.
Burnie Cay.I laughed at that one. It is good that you can find a lighthearted way of looking at the burn!
What a pleasant and mostly bright-eyed and full of smiles vlog episode !! I mean, even Ryan got a bit 'ocean silly' which was fun. Happy your burnie cay is doing well !! 👍💜👍😀

The view of the moon shimmering on the water behind you, in the middle of the night, is GLORIOUS!!! This alone makes staying awake worth it!!!
Enjoyable video thanks guys - quick question for how long can you keep your boat Swedish registered? Do you have to change it at any point in time?
Sophie I am glad that your burn is recovering. That was a bit close to the Hoo Ha! So does the new coffee maker make as good coffee as the old one?
Hahahahahaa! Did you know that Ryan did the dance break before you started editing? Hilarious!!!
Hi Sophie thats called the mid watch
Hopefully Burni Cay will slip away but Who cares ...It adds character. And nothing can detract from your beauty! :)
Check Georges electrical connection. I had a similar problem with my autopilot and it came dow to the thing momentarily turning itself of and then back on due to a loose connection
Ryan can give his views on wind wane vs autopilot debate.
Oh yes, he has a lot of views on that topic ;) /Sophie

Our first off shore passage we had Mars rising off the horizon. Thought for a while it was a floating flare.

Checkout your fluxgate compass... This is very often the cause for mis calculating. Change it for a 100€ or so...
We did change the fluxgate compass last year. Worked for a while, but the problems are back this year. George is 12 years old... may explain! /Sophie
Oh my you both looked like death warmed over for that first night watch change out at midnight and 4am. Sophie you looked much better on the second sunrise watch. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets! A great passage! Fair Winds Sophie and Ryan!
Yep, it does take a couple of days before your body adapts to a new sleep schedule :) but we’re usually pretty good at that! /Sophie

Great video & love your choice of music .. :)
I wish to you good luck nice people✨👍
Wakey wakey should always be accompanied with eggs and bacey. I was disappointed on Sophie behalf

Bought it at Flying Tiger for very little money :) /Sophie
@@RyanSophieSailing Thanks! Her birthday is coming up!
LOL, Great video guys! Safe travels.
Georgski did a Crazy Ivan.
Always goes to starboard on the bottom half of the hour.
I'd be looking into a peer to peer link master/slave config. This bug is showing up across the raymarine platform. That loop must be closed.
I saw somewhere cruisers set up a way to give supplies straight to the schools bypassing fees for organizations. Maybe someone can find that.

No AIS? Herp Derp! Poor planning! Also "non-existent". Si je parlais francais comme ca....
Our AIS had some issue back then. We had to do without for a few weeks until we sorted out the warrantee issues with Raymarine /Sophie
What happened with the new coffee pot?
It looked like Ryan was still using the scolding drip one.
That video was recorded in June, looooong before the Burnie came into our lives along with a new coffee maker ;) /Sophie
Glad you are still enjoying my garlic bread. Jules and Jules. X
It’s become a huge staple of ours 😂 comes out of the oven at least once a week! Thanks for that ;) /Sophie
My auto pilot starts acting up when batteries are low...... by the way.....west coast of Portugal?? Never knew Portugal had an eastern coast....lol!
Hahaha!!! Must have been confused ;) /Sophie

New merchandise idea...”Salty Hair Don’t Care” t-shirts!!!
Oh I like that idea!! 😃 /Sophie

Still gonna go to the Bahamas???
