I have not seen the stage version of WICKED. After I see the movie, I will decide whether I want to see the stage version. My primary interest in seeing the movie is Cynthia Erivo. Having seen her in Harriet and heard her singing of Rise Up. I knew of Ariana Grande's name but not her work. After all the trailers I came to appreciate both of them better. Also, I am interested in their having cast a woman with undeniably African features in the role of Elphaba. Doing this makes me feel like my specific issues with being othered as a person of African heritage and descent are specifically acknowledged rather than being lumped together with generic othering. So, I'm more intrigued by the movie than the stage musical. "General" audiences can continue to see Elphaba's othering as a matter of bias against greenness and a metaphor of othering in general. These are specifically American stories. Acknowledging America's peculiar and specific legally enshrined and on-going othering seems honest and appropriate to me.
