- The city of Skopje serves as both the nation's capital and its largest city. It is the center of the country in all aspects, including politics, culture, economy, and education. The area surrounding Skopje is known as the Skopje Basin.
First mentioned as a city in Roman Dardania in the second century CE, Scupi was located in the region of Dardania. After the collapse of the western half of the Roman Empire in 395 AD, the eastern half, which included Scupi, fell under the control of the Byzantine Empire, which was based in Constantinople. The Byzantines and the Bulgarian Empire fought over control of the town for a significant portion of the early medieval period. Between the years 972 and 992, the town served as the capital of the Bulgarian Empire.
