a tip for the "giant binder" approach is to have 2. I used to split it up like math/science in one binder, and english/foreign language/history in another. I also use folders as dividers themselves instead of having both. that way your notes and papers are in one place. another thing is to be realistic with taking notes, like which classes will need more notes than others. Lastly, dont overflow your binder with blank paper. I used to keep maybe 20 blank sheets in my binder at a time (in the back, and then i would transfer those pages to their respective section... this helps the hole punches in your notes not tear so soon), and have another stack in my locker or at home. Unless you use something more than once a week, theres really no reason it should be in your backpack everyday. Overall, the key to organization is minimalism, so try to keep "backups" of stuff out of your bag unless it is really necessary. best of luck on the new semester!!

My binder will be a study binder, holding all my notes throughout the year, separated by subject, then by trimester. But I’ll keep my binder at home at all times, to study from often. I will take notes at school (obviously) and then come home and transfer them to my study binder. I will also have a smaller binder for classwork, homework, quizzes, tests...all that stuff I never know where to keep. One thing I recommend is HAVE A PLANNER. there are many kinds with many styles, I can just tell you that they will organize your life. You can write important dates, events, due dates, and list your top priorities for the day as well as make to do lists for each day or even for the week, and these can be used outside of school as well as inside.

What worked super well for me was having a folder for every class for handouts and worksheets and then a binder divided by class for notes. I had a stack of hole punched paper in the front of the binder and when I finished taking the notes for a class I would simply move those into that specific section of the binder :) I also put the date and topic at the top of every note page to make them easier to find. My friends loved the idea and it worked well for them too

I’m starting highschool this year, and based on this video i’ve kind of mapped out what i want to do? this probably will change throughout the year as i get more used to highschool and what feels right for me.
so i think i’m going to get a four pocketed folder for each subject. have the pockets be handouts, worksheets, penciled notes and loose leaf paper. i then will also have a thin-ish binder for that subject where i will redo the penciled notes into something more nearer and clear. i’d do the penciled notes in class so that i’m actually paying attention and not trying to make everything pretty and cute. when the unit’s over, i’ll simply throw the paper out. idk if other highschools do this cause i’m big dumb but my high school has certain classes on an “A” day and other classes on a “B” day. i’ll carry around both the folders and binders for those classes, the binders because i usually go to the library or a friends house or to play rehearsal, and i can do the neater notes there, or, you know, at home. i also plan on having notebooks come into play, but i’m not sure yet.
i still don’t know if this will be my final way to do it but i guess this is what “fits my personality” the best or however you’d want to explain it.

Here's what I plan to do for college:
    - One large Class Binder (as I'm doing a single major)
    - Subdivided into 3 Module sections, each colour-coded (so I can swap the module titles out each semester)
    - Tutorial pockets at the front of each module/at the very front of the binder (I'm not sure yet if I'll have different tutorial classes for each module or only one permanent group for the entire subject, probably the former)
    - Labelled pockets within each Module (1 section each for notes on each Topic, then 1 section for Lectures, and 1 section on Group Work if necessary) that I can remove and store in my Study Folder at home, once I'm finished with them during class.
I think this should work for me, and maybe a similar system could be curated for a high school/middle school student too!

Yes! This video inspired my filing system two years ago. I am now a year 12 student in Australia and my system is like this:
    1. Notebook: I use a single notebook for all my subjects. Basically it’s home-made from loose-leaf paper refills divided by those tab divider things you put in binders for each subject. For a cover, I’ve taken the front and back plastic covers off one of those display folders with the plastic sleeves. I hold it together with loose-leaf binder rings. I use metal ones but I prefer the plastic ones from Shein or Wish because they don’t hurt to lean on and they open and close more easily (I accidentally bought the smaller size though, so it could barely hold and papers, which is why I’m using the bigger metal ones). With this system, I can easily take out notes once we finish that topic and refill more when needed. It also saves paper because every piece of paper will be used rather than having a half-full exercise book at the end of the year. Plus, having only one book makes it easier to keep track of (not to mention, it reduces the weight of my school bag).
    2. Sheets: I store my sheets, assessment notifications and hand-outs in the Morning Glory 8 Index Simple Document File. I like it because it’s slim, has the right amount of pockets for my subjects and it’s easy to open and close. I typically keep the ones I access most often in there, or the ones relevant to the topic at the time.
    3. Binders: Like studyquill, I have a binder for each of my subjects. In year 12, this is essential, though in younger years, I managed fine with 1 binder for all of them, separated by tabs. Anyway, I separate my binders with tabs for each of the modules, and one for mixed-module questions/final exam practice. Once we finish a topic in class, I move my notes out of my book and document file and into my binders, which I store at home and use only before studying for a test/looking at resources for an assessment.
    4. Online: For online files, I use iCloud. This means I can have a separate folder for each subject on my desktop and easily drag and drop files into them. I can also access the same files on other devices with the same appleID. I have folders within these folders for modules and final exams as well (in younger years that don’t have modules, you can divide by term, semester, general topics or other as you see fit). At the end of the year, I save these folders onto three different USBs which I keep in three locations and then delete them on my laptop to make space for the new year’s folders (this last bit may not be secure though, so keep track of your USBs! Or else, another system may be better. I still haven’t figured out how to ‘back up’ my computer so that’s why I use the USBs lol).
PHEW. That was a long message! Hopefully someone finds this useful :) I have tried a couple of different systems over the years, but so far I have found this the best

It can be difficult but you can find vertical file folders so you can see the headings of all your papers - I try to use those. Also, to keep the sections organized, I usually try to put the most recent and most important stuff in the front of the section, going all the way back to the oldest and least important. Hope this helps!

I make large binders of my classes that only meet on certain days (ex: a large binder for my T/Th only classes, a different one for my M/W only classes), and smaller individual binders for my classes that meet more than that (MWF, or MTWTh). If a class would normally be in one of the big binders but I know I'll be going to study groups for it, I put it in it's own binder so I don't have to bring 1-3 extra classes with me to study.

I used to have 4 small binders for each subject. Then I swapped to one binder for the morning and one for the afternoon. This year, I'm using one accordion folder for the morning and one for the afternoon. It's pretty nice since I don't need to hole punch stuff, but it does make it harder to look for handouts. So in subjects where the teacher actually takes up homework, like chem in my case, it makes life a little more difficult. But otherwise, the best things about it is how light it is.

What I do is having a binder for each individual subject and writing the date on every single sheet, I started doing this last year and it's really helping a lot. Also I colored my timetable in with the colors of my binder, so every binder has a different color.

I feel like the type of backpack organization depends on the class i take. I try not to have tons of binders, but i do have them for classes that require them. For the most part I try to keep 1-2 subject notebooks for other classes. I keep all of my homework in a spiral folder (it’s like a spiral notebook and an accordion folder mixed together) i put my notes that i dont need anymore in a large binder that i keep at home so i can refer back to them.

What I’ve learned that works for me is that I have one big binder for every subject with dividers just for the subject and I keep it in my back pack but I also have a smaller binder that I use for immediate papers. Whatever things I need to keep for multiple weeks or the whole semester goes into the big binder but whatever is an assignment or homework and I know I’ll probably turn them in in the next week or two will stay in the smaller binder. It’s really helpful because with just a big binder it gets heavy and most of the papers in it are useless for everyday use. And with just a small binder I never have notes or reference sheets from old units whenever teaches say we need to use them. It took me until my junior year in highschool to figure that system out 😂. Also it helps because I can just take out my small binder once I get home and only the papers I need to do are infront of me which helps because I get super overwhelmed easily 😳

For my personal organization system, I have one big binder with all of my notes and, just slipped into the binder, not in the rings, I keep a folder with all of my graded work. In that folder, I slipped a manila folder for work that needs to be finished or turned in. Then, I keep sticky notes around to write down things I need to do if I need to schedule study times for myself or remember to do online homework. THEN, at home, I keep a giant binder for graded work and notes from previous units.

I also use pocket folders to keep my papers organized but I put "dividers" using bookmarks to separate them by category (i.e. handouts, quizzes, notes) so that it will be easier for me to find what I'm looking for. I also use paper clips to ensure that no paper will be lost.

  • @DaniDani-zh5us

Oh I use folders (color coded for each subject) then I use binder and paper clips for subdivision. For example, in math if we learned about quadratic and linear functions, everything related to quadratic is put in a binder clip and everything related to linear functions is put in a binder clip

I use a 2 pocket folder and I use one side for academic classes and the other side for extracurricular classes. Within each pocket I use paper clips to divide the papers . You also should take out old papers from old units and save them in a binder or something so you can go back and study if needed . Don’t throw any papers away until the school year has ended

i have 3 binders. 1 day binder for the classes that i have that day, one giant binder for all the subjects i don't have on a day (this one stays home) and then a bigger one for all the papers i don't really need except when i need to revise a specific thing. Pro tip, whenever you finish a topic/unit condense the things you learned on to one or two sheets. That way it's easier to revise and to understand the stuff while you're making the sheets and later on when you need to look back on them. Saves a fuck ton of time especially for english and math

i never really see people talk about these kinds of binders in videos, maybe because they’re just in my area idk.
but i use this binder sort of thing where there are flexible plastic pockets inside, and it works really well for me. in my school, we’re provided notebooks for each subject, so i separate the books and any worksheets into the different pockets.
downside is that they can break pretty easily if you have a lot of books (which i do).

A simple fix for the lack of sub-organization for the expanding file folder method is to buy stick-on divider tabs. I know that post-it has a few versions of this that even allow color coding. This would give you the benefit of the 3 ring systems without the drawbacks.
