Shelley Adler, Joseph Hartman, Steve Driscoll, Garvin Lynch. There is also another artist, based in New York City who paints really thick, female, under forty - can’t remember her name. I think she has done group shows at Canada Gallery.
As a Indigenous Canadian contemporary artist i'm shocked you didn't chose Kent Monkman or Rebecca Belmore. I have been apart of the scene for 9 years and have not heard of the majority of your list. Save for Kapwani Kiwangas peice at the Venice Canadian Pavilion. Bipoc queer disabled artists are really the waters i swim in and exhibit alongside. Big gay bear hugs and thanks for the introduction of artist who live and work outside of Canada.
Monkman & Belmore are indeed two great artists, who were, unfortunately, not included in the results of this survey. Painters in general were strongly outnumbered so it seems. Thank you for tuning in and wishing you all the best from Belgium!
even though there are many missing artists, this selection really is some of the strongest and prominent contemporary canadian artists, from Jon Rafman to Stan etc.
@@BrooklynJPakathionce you move away from your Country of origin it’s easy to no longer be recognized at home . But I’ve only been apart of the Canadian art world for about 9 yrs myself.
Thank you so much for doing a feature on my home country. Because of our small population and national modesty, I feel like we are unfairly overlooked. One of my favourite Cdn. artists is someone who died tragically (and ironically) in the '80s, Greg Curnoe. Your video is a great way to get introduced to some current voices.
I enjoyed this, thank you! And yes, very Interesting that photography seems to be the main medium on this list of artists. I missed sound and installation artists Janet Cardiff & George Bures Miller and sculptor David Altmejd. One of my very favourite exhibitions ever, anywhere, was of Janet and George’s work at the VAG (Vancouver). I’d love to see Ireland and Italy analyzed too. Thanks!
I couldn't agree more! And yes, Italy and Ireland (most requested so far), sound like two great options for a future video. To be continued! Have a great day!
What an interesting video survey. Good job Perrier you seem especially happy this time. Seeing the work of Moyra Dave’s evokes that depth of an artist truly manifesting work from the eternity of the soul I feel. It reminds me of seeing the New York Art world in the 90’s when living there. It has such depth that some recent groups of works fall short on. Thank you. The slideshow was a gift to experience 🖌️⭐️🙏Thank you again for the work and your time.
Very good idea! Doig is actually a Scottish painter who grew up in Canada-hence the Canadian landscapes and influences in his work. Monkman is great indeed! Thank you for tuning in
I appreciate these videos & your selection method. I am studying contemporary art as an artist. It is overwhelming in breadth. I realized all these top 10 videos are a best place for initial focus, to optimize my time for study, & i can branch out later to examination of galleries. Thanks
I do find it interesting that only a few are able to continue to reside in Canada. I know Ed Burtynsky from his being the owner of Toronto Image Works, a top pro lab there. His work is magnificent and powerful. Stan Douglas has always been a favourite in the contemporary world, even back in the 90s when I lived in Vancouver. Most of the others, like myself, have had to leave Canada in order to find proper support and a market for their work. I worked in pro photo labs and camera shops for many years in Canada and so I have seen the struggles of the top photographers trying to make a name for themselves in Canada. I left in 2002. Hopefully it has improved. Please have a look at Christopher Knights, a contemporary abstract painter residing in Toronto. I met home when he was co-owner of Engine Gallery on Queen Street, but the gallery no longer exists. He paints full time now. He sells his work in a couple of galleries in the US and one in Canada. His works are quite large, full of the frenetic energy of life. Thank you for featuring Canadian artists :-)
Interesting to see how many are ex-pats. Thought for sure Monkman would be here. Karel Funk also would make a great addition. His paintings really are something special.
It’s notable (but unsurprising) how many artists in these lists gravitate to the ‘big’ centres of art (NYC, Berlin etc), in this case 6/10. So far from giving the impression of a vibrant scene centred on the big Canadian cities (which surely exists) we have a collection of artists who happen to have been born in Canada but in reality are a part of the places they moved to. This was also very noticeable from the list you did of top African artists. As someone who has spent a career working in a ‘developing’ centre, I’d be far more interested in investigations of places and cities away from the big 3-4 global centres than in Artfacts somewhat contestable lists. What is the Vancouver or Calgary scene like? Who is working in Lagos or Nairobi? What’s going on in a Lyon or Marseilles, a Birmingham or a Manchester?
Thank you for sharing these Canadian artists. My favorite is not on your list. Marc Seguin was born in Ottawa, lives in Quebec and works between Montreal and New York. He is a painter but also a gentleman farmer. He writes and makes films about contemporary life with a philosophy of nature. Thanks
A very good question; I would say Romania is often overlooked, with so many great painters. Japan, Switzerland and Austria are also often overlooked but very present nations in the art world despite having a smaller population and share in the global art market. Have a great day!
CAI is pronounced KAI. Some pronounce all letters individually but then very often tend to say CIA 😅 Or, in full, Contemporary Art Issue, is also an option but it is a mouthful. Thank you for watching!
Unfortunately, Rodney Graham passed away two years ago and was thus not eligible for this list. Otherwise, he would have definitely been included. Thank you for watching!

A great artist you can discover at the Ottawa museum : shelley Niro
I would say you are missing Marc Seguin from Montreal.
Love that you decided to do Canadian artists.
so sorry for canadian... not impressed at all.
The pleasure is all mine. Had a blast making this video to be honest. Have a great day!

Hi Janet, yes Moyra Dave is a really special artist. A true gem! Happy to hear you enjoyed the slideshow. The pleasure is all mine and stay in touch!
will watch after work! love the dog!! 😌
Great! The dog loves you back 👋🐶
New Video! Here for it! August 11, 2024!
Absolutely 🙌🙏!
Would be interesting to do the top 10 Canadian painters. Kent Monkman, Peter Doig, etc
Very good idea! Doig is actually a Scottish painter who grew up in Canada-hence the Canadian landscapes and influences in his work. Monkman is great indeed! Thank you for tuning in
This issue awesome! Please do Australia as well!
Rolf Harris lol
The pleasure is all mine. Australia is definitely on our-rather lengthy-to-do list!

A magnificent bunch - great to see
Thank you for tuning in!
From Canada, Michel Cohen A.K.A Collection Montparnasse was an important and influenceable art collector but unfortunately passed away very recently.
Interesting to see how many are ex-pats.

Who has the most important artists in the anglosphere, USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, UK, Ireland?
Most likely, the US, followed by the UK, which also reflects the role of both countries in today's art market. Thank you for tuning in!
Thank you great video
Hi
I am from India, and I am following your videos from a long time. But never seen anything about India. Please share a video about India as well.
Is there a nation that is somewhat overlooked? I'm not sure exactly who to pick but that seems like a good choice.
A very good question; I would say Romania is often overlooked, with so many great painters. Japan, Switzerland and Austria are also often overlooked but very present nations in the art world despite having a smaller population and share in the global art market. Have a great day!
Kudo's Edward Burntynsky
Stunning work indeed!
E Burtynsky #1!!!...Tak Tenobe #2!!
Good call!
No Kent Monkman?!?!?
Larry Towell
Is it pronounced KAI or SAI
CAI is pronounced KAI. Some pronounce all letters individually but then very often tend to say CIA 😅 Or, in full, Contemporary Art Issue, is also an option but it is a mouthful. Thank you for watching!
You forgot Rodney Graham
Unfortunately, Rodney Graham passed away two years ago and was thus not eligible for this list. Otherwise, he would have definitely been included. Thank you for watching!
You missed Ken Monkman
That was a very strange list. I have heard only 3 of them.
Thank you for tuning in, feel free to share your personal top 10. Have a great day!
You missed Karl Skaret. You asked...
Go for it, Karl 🙌💪
Ireland
