  • I was able to get an old-school dial-up modem to work over a cell phone! Using my TRS-80 Model 102 and the acoustic coupler connected through a novelty handset I was able to call Level 29 and log in!

    Yeah we did some serious hacking back in the day with these little model 100's! They were super handy. Batteries lasted forever so there was a LOT you could do with them. I had a 1200 baud external (battery powered) pocket modem stuck to the bottom. I had a 3.5". battery powered disk drive... but that was more trouble to use than it was worth.

      DoctorNoob I've read this isn't really possible due to the massive amounts of audio compression applied to cell phone conversations. I think the reason this example is based on the slow 300 Baud transmission speed limited by the acoustic coupler.

    ok, using a novelty handset to interface to a coupler...pretty fucking clever. :)

    I had thought of making my own little kit where I can receive and send faxes without a third party digital service and just send it through my cell phone via the dial-up method. I accidentally called a Fax number and then I had a thought, "why not just wire up some adapters and use my phone's dialing function to send faxes?" so, that's where I was also curious to see if I could also use dial up to connect to bbs systems and sure enough, you demonstrated just that. So, I can conclude that my theory of also using this "dial-up" method is also true to sending faxes (or also receiving faxes).
    Thank you so much. : D and it's an awesome video by the way; 10/10 always recommend.

    • @timothyt.82

      The handset shouldn't cost too much. In fact, it's nice to have one for when you need to make a call and do something else on your smartphone. No more speaker phone.
      The other equipment is going to be more tricky... The acoustic coupler would probably be the easier piece to find, but it will most likely be an antique.

    I've tried pretty much this exact setup with my Model 100 (cell phone plugged into handset, going into acoustic coupler) using the exact same communication parameters (M8N1D,10), but all I ever get is strings of random text & characters. Any clue as to what I'm doing wrong??

    • @PresidentJeanAuguste

      The reason is because that most of cellular calls are pretty much audio compressed, making it pretty hard to translate data into text

    I would love to do the same thing with an old fax machine, the ones that have a handset. I'm looking for a generic acoustic coupler to plug into the fax machine. Has anyone made that work similarly to this video?

    • @gooddayhuman
      @gooddayhuman 3 года назад

      I haven't tried it, but if the fax machine has an "overseas mode" setting, it should fall back all the way down to 300bps and be a lot more forgiving with echo, compression, and delay. BTW anyone into this type of thing should definitely check out the ITTY internet TTY project.

For the use OP is describing above, it may need some modification to the gain section of the circuit. Hope this helps!
