Love your videos! My personal top 10: 1. Greta Garbo - Queen Christina 2. Jean Harlow - Bombshell 3. Katharine Hepburn - Little Women 4. Mae West - She Done Him Wrong 5. May Robson - Lady for a Day (more supporting) 6. Marie Dressler - Dinner at Eight 7. Jean Harlow - Dinner at Eight 8. Katharine Hepburn - Morning Glory 9. Fay Wray - King Kong 10. Miriam Hopkins - Design for Living
Towards the end of her life Katharine Hepburn was ubiquitous, covers of all the magazines and interviewed time and again on television. What may have been off-putting in earlier stages of her life, became more palatable with the softened edges and experience of someone who had been around a long time. The ethos prized by Americans of individualism and swimming upstream to achieve goals were espoused by her. It was both refreshing and timely to be heard coming from a woman. From growing up in a household considered eccentric and the dark side of "bohemian" here she was on the cover of every bland, mainstream ladies' magazines. She could not have hired a better press agent. With all that has been written about her, I approached "Call Me Kate" as probably a rehash. What else could there be? But in Fritz-style they unearth never-seen footage concerning the family and past lovers and add dimension to integral relationships in her upbringing, such as her complicated father, and brother who hung himself---also of the man she married. Also included is Miss Hepburn's own voice preserved on tape: Interviewer: "Do you consider yourself an opportunist?" Kate: "I think everyone's an opportunist given the opportunity to be an opportunist." Recommended, on Netflix.
"Two of an actress's greatest assets are love and pain. A great actress, even a good actress, must have plenty of both in her life." - Katharine Hepburn.
I totally agree with your assessment of Cavalcade ... I just never could get into it .. Lloyd did a better job the same year with "Hoop-La" starring Clara Bow in her last film ..
This is definitely one of the most clear cut, but incredibly underwhelming races in any of the acting categories, not at all helped by the fact there's only three women nominated as opposed to the now common five. It's a shame, as this line up definitely had potential but two of them didn't execute as well as they could have, while Poor May Robson is kind of left alone before the halfway mark. Had a supporting category existed, I'm sure May Robson would have had a real chance at winning. And what's with their constant comparisons to Greta Garbo, when she was right there and she gave one of the greatest performances in her entire career, only for it to be completely ignored?
Fritz you’re so hard on young Kate. Name any other young actor of the era who was more fully realized. Hepburn always transcends onscreen because she worked harder than anyone. Plus, as she said, Katharine Hepburn arrived in Hollywood at exactly the right time.
@@FritzandtheOscars I respect your opinion, but disagree. May Robson is heartbreaking in Lady, but for me young Kate is so full of brilliance and range (esp. the Hamlet soliloquy!)

- Katharine Hepburn.
How could there be only three nominees that year? All the studios cranked out movies every week back than
She's my favorite too! She was never afraid to look or seem ridiculous as it always worked out in the end. Beautifully so.
Another brilliant analysis. Thank you.
Thanks so much!
Robson gives a beautiful performance in a surprisingly spare and modern Capra classic
Gran trabajo gracias!!!
Garbo should've won that year for " Queen Christina! "
Queen Christina is a v late Dec 1933 release n wld only qualify for the following yr 1934 Oscars noms

I mean, Kate is my favorite actress of all time and I love most of her work but Morning Glory is one of her few performances I cannot get fully behind

@PeterFitzgerald acting is highly subjective so every opinion is totally valid! 😀
