Seventeen literally exists as choreography lessons. Now, I don't know much about kpop, but I love watching Seventeen's choreography videos. The reason they're so nice to watch dance is not particularly just because the dance is impressive (which it IS), but because they understand the song is a singing/rapping performance first. Therefore, the choreography more or less centers around getting people in the right places at the right times and making switches clear. Take 1:23 through 1:34, for example. We transition out of the last dance section into this one by literally walking through the previously set up formation, re-centering focus for this new thing. Then, they set up three layers of performers over each other, so that when it was time for one person to end and the next to begin, the previous group just walking, nothing fancy, just walking, and your eyes were already on the next people that were important. But that was a formation they made and used over the course of twenty seconds; however, their planning ahead is INSANE. Baseball cap boyo over here has his position in the formation set by 0:14, right of pick hair mcgee. It isn't until 0:46, over 30 seconds later that this position pays off, allowing him to seamlessly take focus while going right instead of left. They thought about what needed to happen here to transition to viewer through one singer into the next, and focused one him being exactly where he needed to be at the beginning of the song to make that happen. I know there's a running joke of "I bet you didn't see them do this," especially if you're watching the art that is Pretty U, but it's true for a reason. At 1:00, everyone is dancing in one formation, completely in sync, no one off doing their own thing. Then, at 1:14, the dance separates to reveal four people that seemingly had no part of the previous dance. But they must have. To pull this off, the four were positioned off the back-sides of the triangle formation, so that when they broke off, the triangle just got slightly smaller. Point is, the formations are thought about meticulously so that the dance remains fluid while watching it. Finally, let's take a look at how they use the center to carry meaning. Perhaps best shown at 1:50. This grimace-hair looking boy is established as our focal point pretty simply: he's standing, no one else is. Awesome, but they everyone needs to be standing when the next drop starts, so what do they do? They set the formation center to the left of where the singer is, still allowing you to see the singer perfectly while everyone standing; they make sure to only do small dance moves to not draw to much attention before the drop. Then, when the beat does drop, the dance becomes intense and expressive again, redrawing your focus 0.2 millimeters to the left, back to center, to the next line of focus. Which then runs through the same procedure as 1:23 - 1:34. These videos are dance videos, sure, but the dance first-and-formost is concerned with maintaining clear communication for who is singing, and all of this information is seamlessly incorporated into the dance, so the song no longer exists apart from it. The two are linked. The dance won't make sense without the song, and the song makes less sense without the dance. I think part of why I find so much enjoyment in watching their choreography is because, as you can probably tell, I don't know anyone's names. Therefore, I have no bias that I'm particularly focused on, and I'm able to watch the song from a more-or-less outsider point of view, just focusing on whatever the heck my eyes follow. But jeez, their choreography is in a league of its own from anything I've ever seen. In summary, colorful hair bois bounce beautifully. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. P.S: Just an appreciation for 2:31, where they rotate on beat. The four steps match the hi-hats into the drop, which is just beautiful and I love it, and that must've been hard.
This is an amazing analysis, and I'm glad that you took the time to break it down for us. No shade to other groups, but one reason that they're able to focus on the most optimal blocking (for the song parts) is that all the members are, to out it simply and obviously, really good at dancing, and not only that have a very similar foundational understanding of movement and rhythm that allows them especially to appear as they are moving as one body. Other groups often have one or two members who are not as natural at dancing (this is NORMAL and not to be ashamed of) but that presents an extra logistical challenge where choreographers have to constantly be aware of their positions in the formation and make sure not to block them in difficult combos, which results in limitations to creative expression. However with seventeen, you don't need to worry about it because you can expect that every member would be capable of doing even the most hardest moves. That's why you see main vocals, etc. doing the dance breaks (like in Hit) not because they're the best dancers and had to be there, but because it was convenient to put them there for the purposes of the song. Another reason is heavy member involvement in the choreography process. They often work with select professionals, but the final product (especially regarding formations I assume) lies heavily under their jurisdiction, and they are right for that because ultimately it's the members that know their strengths the most. Choi Youngjoon, who works with then the most, says that working with the performance unit is like working with another choreography team because they are that qualified and capable. I actually feel like groups who aren't able to have as much input aren't able to show more of themselves because their choreographers don't know their strengths enough.
Wow. Thank you so much for this analysis. I feel like I understood the choreography in a whole other light now. And I really liked how you said at the end about how you just let your eyes follow what’s on the screen. Because I feel Seventeen really knows how to put someone under the spotlight as in centre, very effortlessly and without the viewers having to search. Whether the centre is at the centre, back or sides. They know how to direct the viewers’ gaze so that even in a busy choreography like Adore U or Snap Shoot, you can still know who’s the one singing or rapping and because of that they were able to pull of the ‘wait-that-wasn’t-there-before’ moment like in Pretty U where they yeeted a whole sofa off the stage. This might have been obvious for some people but I kid you not, I didn’t notice at all that the sofa was gone when the pre-chorus with Seungkwan, the main vocal, happens. I could register the fact that there was a sofa before and no sofa after but I guess I was just too mesmerised by their performance that it doesn’t quite link up to me until the 5th or 6th performance of Pretty U that I’ve watched.
I’m very late to comment but Seventeen are seriously theE best overall dancers in kpop group wise. There choreography is always novel, sharp, and CLEAN. This is why I love Seventeen. They never fail to amaze the crap outta me. Sincerely, a professional dancer
you should watch his fancams tho! i wonder why his dance caught my attention the most too but after thinking abt it.. his dance lines are amazing. idk much about the right term for it but he always give just the right amount of energy and flex to his dance moves
seventeeen has some of the best and hardest choreographies in all of kpop....also their choreographies are so good at telling stories and bringing out small details..its literally so cinematic and entertaining..and the way the boys dance is absolutley amazing they change their execution to fit the mood of each song like jeonghan here 0:28 was just so amazing...not anything cool but you can see how he was holding his arm tightly while bringing his hand up like u can see the tension.
Kae V ohhh but during 'Home' era, i remembered they only released one choreography video with a still camera work. I thought this was the same thing but with moving camera work lol
Kay stellar camera work aside, this CHOREO. a masterpiece 💗✨ the small, yet powerful wrist keypoint is so Sensual as the sharp kick that follows serves as it's *duality!* well the lingering wrist move afterwards is just as aesthetic. the hip sways & body rolls are gentle, but leave such an impact on the performance and the opening poses what looks to be reaching for an escape... artwork, all in itself. throw in the visuals of Vernon♡ himself, Jeonghan's androgynous beauty, Soonyoung channeling lethal Hoshi, Minghao looking divine, Jisoo's striking expressions, ALL of our stunning boys! more than anything, the generally heartfelt lyrics to this track and the artistry of the fears shown in it's MV-- what you're left with is nothing short of Hauntingly Spectacular 💐 even as a Carat, im floored! An Ode, in its entirety, is deserving of AWARDS!!!
Before watching seventeen Me watching other groups: damn they synchronized as f After watching seventeen Me watching other groups: why aren’t they synchronized
😂lol that's what I have been thinking after I became a carat. Really no other group seems more synchronized than SEVENTEEN now..they've taken my heart noww😍

Ok I'm still not over this. This choreography drives me insane, especially after the last chorus to the end. I get so hype every time the chorus comes on and I have to rewind it to watch the move over and over again. How can they be this talented CONSISTENTLY???
I've been a carat for 5 years now and I genuinely haven't been able to ever comprehend how they are all such phenomenal dancers who are always in sync and create intensely beautiful choreo everytime
there’s no one behind the camera tho. remember, svt the self producing idols? they attached a string to the camera and the celling to swing back and forth
naega hosh how does the camere go up and down?and make close ups without ‘swinging back’? How does the camera tilt? Bro it’s is clearly not swinging back and forth on a string
SEVENTEEN's choreography has always been captivating on its own. The formation, the subtle yet meaningful details in their moves, the way each member's part is highlighted and of course their signature synchronization, put all these together and you'll find it's never enough to truly appreciate their work of art. Personally, I think a simple choreography video is enough because we can get to see the full picture of the dance with all member. There is no need for flashy camera work and the constant camera movements just makes it more distracting. But after all, I understand that they're working hard to show us their best. So, "Thank you SEVENTEEN for giving us this fascinating song and dance. You've worked hard and we appreciate that!"
and this isnt even their highest level technical-wise!! check out the choreo's for getting closer, 24h, fallin' flower, home;run, THANKS, Don't Wanna Cry, CLAP, and Rock With You to name a few of my favorites. you will be BLOWN AWAY.

I actually feel like groups who aren't able to have as much input aren't able to show more of themselves because their choreographers don't know their strengths enough.
i love these two comments 😭 if only i could press like more than once

I noticed dinos wearing one black and one red shoe and now that’s all I can see. It keeps catching my eye.
Damn now I can't unsee it either
damn seventeen and unus annus? are you me???
Why did you do this to me I can't stop looking at it now 😭
I’m very late to comment but Seventeen are seriously theE best overall dancers in kpop group wise. There choreography is always novel, sharp, and CLEAN. This is why I love Seventeen. They never fail to amaze the crap outta me. Sincerely, a professional dancer

I knew that DK was good dancer, but he seriously caught my attention here, this boy doesn't want me to live...
Especially on 1:50 and on
you should watch his fancams tho! i wonder why his dance caught my attention the most too but after thinking abt it.. his dance lines are amazing. idk much about the right term for it but he always give just the right amount of energy and flex to his dance moves
CAMERA WORK MAKES THIS CHOREO LOOK POWERFUL!!! THANK YOU SEVENTEEN, THANK YOU PLEDIS!!! ❤️
seventeeen has some of the best and hardest choreographies in all of kpop....also their choreographies are so good at telling stories and bringing out small details..its literally so cinematic and entertaining..and the way the boys dance is absolutley amazing they change their execution to fit the mood of each song like jeonghan here 0:28 was just so amazing...not anything cool but you can see how he was holding his arm tightly while bringing his hand up like u can see the tension.
I love how this dance practice was filmed!! Pledis be steppin up their game
김연희 i think this is not the dance practice vid. They always have a choreography vid.
I like it but I hope they will release a dance practice without camera work
Kae V ohhh but during 'Home' era, i remembered they only released one choreography video with a still camera work. I thought this was the same thing but with moving camera work lol
notsurewhyistan lets trust pledis to release one
I think the camera work was not good, they moved in and out way too much and detracts from the choreo

The fact that the camera work and editing on this is better than some mv's is just-
I was keep looking for Jun, Hoshi & Woozi cause i freaking love their dancing, but it was hard this time.... i feel drunk....
Drunk from visual and talents *cough* camerawork *cough* *cough*

This dance choreography video is high quality. Im amazed😭😭😭😭
I appreciate how pledis improve the camera work but tbh i prefer the camera stand still for the dance practice :( so we can see the detail more
I agree... It's only for the dance practice.. You can see the mv for the Best one.
Agree. We have so many live performances of them which are zooming in and out like this. I also want a choreo video where i can see everything and everyone.
I think there's a difference between dance practice and choreography video. They didn't drop the dance practice one yet

okay but seventeen is a group that is always consistently in sync/close to perfection with each other- you can tell they really take the time to practice details with each movie,, anyways this low angle filming is EVERYTHING
