    • @drjohnson98
      @drjohnson98 4 года назад +10

      I agree. I've thought for years that he would have been great in a heavy dramatic role as a villain. Kind of like when they cast Henry Fonda as the bad guy in Once Upon the Time in the West. His performance in The King of Comedy hinted at what he could do in a dramatic role. When he wasn't clowning, he sometimes projected an air of menace.

    • @mirazusta2002
      @mirazusta2002 3 года назад +9

      He did, at least, once, when he played Jerry Langford in "The King of Comedy", where he basically plays himself in a dramatic role, to outstanding effect. I think comedy is probably the toughest genre for an actor to do. Probably, he, Mr. Jerry Lewis, enjoyed comedy the best, however, imho, he could have been also a great dramatic actor had he pursued that path, as the aforementioned movie proves. By the way, that movie, "The King of Comedy" is a great one, worth seeing.

    Those kids he loved so much were cut out of his will and left nothing. His youngest, 8-years-old at the time, died in poverty as a drug addict... his illegitimate daughter could never get him to take responsibility for her. Lewis was a total jerk.

    • @Sunflower-cb1sk

      But he did raise them, gave them an education, some of them even worked for him later in his life. He divorced Patti in 1983, when most of them were already grown ups. The youngest son was 19 at the time. The oldest 38. It's not like he went away when they were babies, and never looked back. But for that illegitimate daughter, he really did her wrong. Never wanted to help her knowing she's homeless.

    Jerry Lewis certainly did alot to help young disabled children.
    I respect him for that.
    However, there were many occasions when Jerry was mean and nasty to people
    Jerry saw it as joking around - he even said so - but many people interpreted his jokes as extremely mean and nasty and they voiced their concerns to him.
    I dont think Jerry realised that not everyone appreciated his crude style of jokes or crude off screen humour.
    His off screen humour was very different from his on screen humour.
    The ON SCREEN Jerry was the child friendly Jerry that we saw.
    But the OFF SCREEN Jerry was the adult content Jerry that only people like me who have worked in the industry saw firsthand.
    People need to learn to distinguish between the ON SCREEN Jerry and the
    OFF SCREEN Jerry - as they were not the same person.
    I met him several times in the late 1980's.
    He told us that he was just joking around with us. (The crew)
    Its just that other members of the crew did not always get the crude jokes - particularly his more "adult content" jokes.
    That was the OFF SCREEN Jerry that i worked with in the late 1980's.
    He was a great comic ON SCREEN - but
    OFF SCREEN some of his more sexually explicit jokes with the crew were shocking to us.
    Like i said, most people only saw the
    ON SCREEN Jerry who was child friendly.
    But i worked with the OFF SCREEN adult content Jerry that had a completely different style of humour from the ON SCREEN Jerry.
    It was very adult content in terms of the nature of the jokes.
    Our job as the crew is to shoot the scene after the background sets have been built and the wadrobe and make up artists have done their work and the lighting crew set up.
    It was inbetween shooting scenes that i met the REAL Jerry - and trust me - his style of humour was completely different to his child friendly movies.

      Dave N Japan I don’t know, I am one of those fans who have always felt that there was something deeper and much more personal behind their breakup. I mean, they were so close and such good friends for so many years (in fact Jerry always referred to Dean as a combination “big brother and father figure”) that it just doesn’t seem to make any sense that a purely business decision would engender so much bitterness and such a deafening almost lifelong silence on the subject on both their parts. There has been much speculation over the years, but now they are both gone (and most of their contemporaries also) it seems that it will probably remain a mystery, unless one of their surviving family members might someday come forward with a more meaningful explanation.

      Rob Denaro I don’t know if ‘ecstatic’ is exactly the right word. I feel that Dean was certainly relieved to finally move on in his own career after so many years playing second fiddle to Jerry’s slapstick humour. And he certainly proved to be a fine straight dramatic actor, playing alongside the likes of Montgomery Clift, Marlon Brando and John Wayne amongst others. Plus of course having his own long- running and top-rated TV show ( in which he was able to really demonstrate his own considerable, if very different, comedic talents), as well as becoming a member of the famed Rat Pack.
