Putin’s meatgrinder tactic will hit limit as Russian prisons emptied onto front line | Mark Galeotti

- “They’re losing something like 1200 soldiers a day and they’re not making massive progress.”
There is “a limit” to the amount of resources and manpower Putin can continue to throw at the war in Ukraine, says Russia security expert Mark Galeotti.

If you completely close a prison camp, all the guards become available for military service! Win-win

Although grinding 1k+ lives a day the guards aren't a drop in the ocean and even the prisoners don't plug the hole for long.

it's called a tease. Standard media practice for decades, and it's fine
@@k-dawgbroadcasting5444 I don't see many other videos doing it. It's literally just cutting tape and shoving it at the start. It's not fine - it's clearly a practice that's rarely done anymore, thankfully. The title and the thumbnail are more than adequate 'teases'.

The world is still expecting the Ukraine to fight with one hand tied behind its back.
Most of the world don’t care, as they are more focussed on their own internal issues.
Reminds me of the shameful episode in the Vietnam war when the Secretary of state for defence allowed the recruitment of young men who had failed the basic education standards required to serve in the army. The results were predictable.
Robert McNamara was the guy.
It’s gonna happen again but sugar coated as something you’d morally support. Just watch.
They called them McNamara's Morons. McNamara's intent was to provide additional resources for them: education for those with low IQ, physical therapy for those with disabilities, proper nutrition for those who were underweight. It was framed as a way of giving opportunities to people who wouldn't otherwise have them. (But then a lot of those programs never materialized, for various reasons... and they didn't help much anyway.)
There's one stat that says those conscripts died at 3x the rate of other soldiers, and another stat that says they died at about the same rate. The difference is that most never made it out of boot camp and therefore into combat, or they weren't capable of holding a weapon and were given other duties.
The ones who did see combat died at a higher rate than the regulars. It will be interesting in a few decades to see more accurate tallies of today's conflict, and make comparisons. Then we'll see the effect of the fundamental difference between the situations: Russia's effort requires the deaths of some fraction of their own conscripts, and it's already observable in terms of who's being sent on the suicide missions; while America wanted their conscripts to return from the war and be functional members of society.
There will be next to no historical data from this Russian w@r. The endemic corruption leaves no documentation.
@glenm99 There was another level of the targeted drafting of "McNamara's Morons" - their age. As op said "young men" - the selection of draft classes had been pushed down to younger draftees hand in hand with the selection of "lower IQ" troops. The White House was sick of anti - Vietnam War protesters, peace protesters, and others, on the streets, school campuses, and around government buildings. So McNamara tinkered with the "selective" part of the selective service and the draft it produced.
There are a couple of good songs that illustrate this half decade drop in the age of service members between WWII times and Vietnam times ; _'19'_ by Paul Hardcastle, and _'I Was Only 19'_ by Redgum (for the similar occurrence among our allies, the Australians', experience of Vietnam).

Yes, Russia is slowly gaining ground in Donbas, but it does not mean Ukraine is losing. The devastation in the areas Russia "liberates," is such that it would take billions to rebuild. Russia can't afford to do it. What victory is that?
Attrition is taking its toll.
It's called a Pyrrhus victory. And Russians are well known for it.

@@flaneurfilms1940 Viability matters less than you might think. You can throw out the top guy, push out the governing faction, topple the regime, change the governing philosophy and convert the structure of government but that doesn't get you the change. You still need a new governing class to come in, take the reins and be willing to put the new system before their political disagreements and even that isn't enough. You need continued buy-in from the judicial, the executive and all of admistration to keep making the required changes and to allow them to rule and real civil support from the populace, to pressure, take responsibility and participate, in order to make it stick.
Otherwise, it's just new lipstick on the same old pig with everything functioning just like it used to. You might have a disconnected high-level government playing their games, letting the bureaucracy and the admistrative ignore them and slog on as before, or an old-style regime on top simply showing the façade of going through the motions of a new system (like how the czarist system has essentially been in power to these days but in different outward forms), or maybe a powerless government unable to enact change in the culture of governance, slowly either getting taken over or sliding back to the old ways, because that's the only way they can keep any control over the bureaucracy stuck in the old ways, ...or maybe something else.
Simply put, non-viability simply ends up getting rid of the old guy(s), if they lose control of the situation. (If they don't, they can just hang on basically forever like in NK.) Unless the population effects a true change and there are people able and willing to step in, you merely get a change of faces. If you look at the old Soviet or Warsaw Pact countries, the nations who wanted a difference and fought for it, either got it or are on the way. Otherwise, people take advantage of the old system and the existing power structures, get to the top and perpetuate the same old thing. All hail the new king, same as the old one. The difference between different authoritarian systems seems to be fairly cosmetic. Even the soft-hard spectrum is largely an illusion, which one will find out, if they are seen as any kind of a threat to the existing system.

Russia has two years tops of this war at which point it will have expended all relevant materiel thus have no relevant military left probably only enough to barely take care of Moscow and St. Petersburg, but not very well.
