I was a foster kid back in the 90's. This song meant everything to me. I've since traveled the world. It gave me hope and a fight to make tomorrow an ever greater adventure.

This is masterpiece
Is this not the MOST beautiful song of all time? My god, the amount of soul crammed into 5 minutes is seriously impressive.
The sad thing is how this is a true story for many of us. How many have been hurt and found others who have also been hurt. We hope together we can heal and do better than what we came from. Then we end up being hurt again by the very people that we hoped would understand our pain and want better. We have a feeling we finally found where we belong, and that we can finally rise above the past, and the past just ends up repeating itself.
❤
What sort of philosophy shit is this
You can give the world your very best, and it wont be enough anyway. Do your very best anyway. Some will always have something negative to say, even if something is perfect. Remember that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Your perception is reality. Broaden your thinking and one will realize that one can manage much more than you ever imagined. Love is the most powerful thing on this planet. It is stronger than hate and fear. Always have integrity and you will have happiness. Always be grateful and one will move mountains. If the Lord brings you to it, then the Lord will bring you through it. Do your best, and let the Lord do the rest.

Funny how some people discover in 2016 Tracy Chapman is a woman 😢 yesssss she is and her voice and songs are the purest of gems ❤️
+Dansyoutube I swear its a man, because when i was young i thought it was a woman because of the Tracy aha but i then found out Tracy Chapman is a man.
+Katelyn IsnotAmazing I'm not gonna feed the troll today :) stay safe
A LOT of people thought it was a guy: and u can't blame them for that cuz u don't hear a woman with this kind of cadence in their voice. Calm down. That's what makes her unique. You really think EVERYONE thougtht it was a woman? Google it, I'm sure she got it ALL THE TIME that people thought she was a guy. Just like people thought charlie pride was white!!!!!
Wait this is a chick???
I'm not surprised..I'm a woman and have a deeper voice than Tracy's. I always knew she was a woman though.
I rember when this song came out, it was emotional and heartful now at sixty years old I'm welling up with tears on my face. Listen young ones listen to the words, Change the world you live in.
They just don't write songs like this anymore.. thanks for the lovely video
sylvia coffey the black keys. Passenger. Lumineers.
sylvia coffey sure Sylvia
The past five years music has been sucking. I agree.

And if they did you would just download the song and have a good time.
This song is about generational childhood trauma. It passes down to each generation until someone breaks the cycle. Life is beautiful and if you break through this struggle mentality u will find abundance. Not an easy road but it is possible. I come from a life of poverty and abuse and am now a millionaire who can do whatever I like when I like. I still have alot of work to do but I no longer hang with people from low vibrations. Much love to all people who are trying to make it out the sadness.
This is the damn truth. I love this song. I dont normally comment on shit but this is spot on...
Am i the only one who cries like a little kid with this song? It gets me everytime damn it
Not the only one
I cried to....always T_T
Jeany jmh sadly no u arent the only one lol
Jeany jmh Excellent song! The music and lyrics create an atmosphere that make me pour tears too!
Jeany jmh i still find it to be one of the most saddest songs. i luv Cohen's poetry to music but this song? it kinda tears at my heart and confuses me like no other song. i wish i knew why.
mum and dad maybe... probably...
Just broke up with my boyfriend yesterday while listening to this song. The whole relationship had been toxic for me up to the point where it just destroyed my self esteem. It's tough because I'm in love but I know it's for the best.
I know your way over that now but just wanted to let you know how brave your
That exciting and hopeful start then that sad ending. This song is bitter-sweet.

my grandma is dying and this is her favorite song... so I play it for her all the time😍😍

This was my mom's favorite song. She'd sing it ALL the time. Her bestfriend still remembers her singing this in the car. I cry when I hear this. So much emotion..

I've just revisited this video from when it hit 500,000 views to find out it's not far off 1.1 mill. Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to watch (even if it was just partly) and comment. A lot of people have asked for less animations etc so I'll take that on board for future videos to come!! Also, any requests would be greatly appreciated. :)

Its 2021 and i still love this song...it me and mines exact life...👍 just keep ya head up and try the best you can..🤑🤑
This song brings back a clear memory for me. I cried as I was singing this song. 1990's had the best musicians and singers.
Song reminds me of me & my younger brother trying to get away from our drunken dad after mom left us when we were young. Brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it!!
The depth and meaning in all of the beautiful expression of her art is so grounded and focused, and reverberates most clearly of all in the final two verses, particularly in the last one, where, after having to leave him, with their kids, she still holds the compassion, and love to try to inspire him to escape it, and still save himself, as well..
Sheer brilliance too; what a musician....!!...exceptional talent..
Yes! This song gives me a warm feeling.. I feel creative with words and inspired by the lyrics every time I listen to this. It makes me want to run away to the city and start all over!
I was 14 years old when I first listened to this song. Now after 20+ years, it is still one of my favorite song.
Same
This song is absolutely beautiful!!!!!!
Love this song, and so did my dad aw...RIP Daddy =(
R.I.P
Sry about ur dad
Same here. My Dad liked this song as well and he is gone to :( I feel your pain :(
rest in peace
My dad loved this song too. :(
the first time i heard this, i cried, cried hard and without shame. this is a story of so many of the kids i taught in high school. they were poor, but they wanted more, not just money, but a life beyond what they had been told was to be theirs. they wanted to read more, see more of the world, listen and talk to more people, simply live in a way that they could never achieve.
my god, what an amazing song, the narrative is that of a lost generation, and becoming truer every day. i'm so damn sorry that i couldn't have been a better teacher, a better person, for so many of my students.....
Beautiful song
Best comment here. Thanks for being an advocate for children of any age. I can bet you made more of an impact than you know, to someone. ❤
Love Tracy Chapman's music and relate to some of her pain the rough times in life can make you turn you upside down sometimes; or living out of a car; trying to be some one; but God has brought me out of the ashes and has truly blessed me from a car to a house; sons are blessed. Truly "be someone" thank you Tracy for this music!
Such a heartbreaking but beautiful song
Man, this is the only song that can get me to cry. I love this song. 😢 I feel like I can somehow relate to it at this time in my life.
Really gets you to the heart this song. Sad & yet hopeful :(
Been enjoying this song for quite some time. It took up until now for me to see the lyrics. I am listening to a mere work of art. Such a perfect portrayal of life, hope and broken dreams..
Perfect well done this song always breaks my heart.
is there no official video for this song?
What a song! Such powerful lyrics. Trying to escape and be something else. Tracey Chapman speaks/sings from the heart.
I always want to cry when I hear this song. It starts out so full of hope and aspiration, but when it says "you stay out drinking late at the bar, see more of your friends than you do of your kids" the walls come crashing down. It's hard to break the chain of dysfunctional families.
I am a legend. Whoo hoo. Halfway through 2021. And I am listening 👍👏
I lived in a small rust belt town, I wanted a ticket to anywhere, I left....this song touches my heart every time I listen to it...
"This is one of my all-time favoUrite songs." You must be British, what? Thanks for the lyrics. This is one of my favorites, too. Tracy Chapman's great. Wonder what she's doing now. Haven't heard from her in forever. Anyone?
hhh
this isone of my all
How we’ve all had those moments of supreme inspiration during our youth. But then a situation arose that may have pulled you back, and changed the trajectory of your life forever. But does anybody need to “live and die this way”? Propose to take a fast car and keep on driving...
tracy you tell a very vivid picture of your life your music makes me feel again ty
dedicated to my mom, my best friend. ..RIP...

Italy, Riviera dei fiori (flowered riviera), rainy day, having a capuccino and viewing the newspaper in a bar, I suddenly hear tracy chapman's Revolution song. I think by myself "is it possible I never tried to hear more about this artist ?" so on internet I found the song "Fast Car". This song will make my day ! very beautiful song!!
"Someone's gotta look after him , so i quit school and that what i did:" Gets me every time . Quickly became a favorite when it came out
Fantastic. It's the little things that make the difference in this dirty mixed up world. Thank you.
I usually don't like songs like this but God this song is good.
You are right Miss Pretty
👍👍👍 its perfect
Thanks
Saw the track in an Ad after so long. I just love this song. the song and the singer are made for each other. Fantastic and mesmerising.
Only one way to describe this song goosebumps❤️
Her songs bring me back to my memories when I was younger.. my brother had a collection of Tracy Chapman.. it was the time when me and my siblings were living in one house.. now.. we have our own families living in different locations.. love this music.
"So remember when we were driving, driving in your car;
Speed so fast I felt like I was drunk.
City lights lay out before us,
And your arm felt nice wrapped 'round my shoulder.
And I had a feeling that I belonged."
"I had a feeling I could be someone, be someone, be someone."
The second verse does it for me it always makes me cry. Maybe more so when i listen to it. I aways think of my life struggles... Then the tears start flowing.
The images used on this fit the song really well, and you managed to shift the tone in them to reflect the change as the verses progress, which is impressive. Thank you for doing this.
I love this song, grew up with it. with mum dancing round house singing it, they were the good times xx
this is my favourite song EVER!
Listening to this gives me nostolgiaa😫❤

Thx for uploading this.
Absolutely love this. my mother introduced this song to me in middle school. She sings this song as beautifully as Tracy Chapman!!!
such a brutally sad song. Tells it like it is, no redemption, only escape, but to what? Brutally beautiful song...
I can't get enough of this song❤❤❤
Heard this song one hundred times, first time i heard her say ...... with our arms wraped around our children..... sweet.
This is about other people's lives getting in the way of your's no matter how hard you try.

I remember this song from when I was like 4 years old (by melody and Tracy's unique voice) and it has stayed w/ me as one of my favourite songs EVER. As an 80s baby, obviously, now I'm able to understand the meaning behind the lyrics. Sad how music these days doesn't relate to everyday life like this song does. Thanks for the upload Cody
I didn’t know this song but it suddenly played in my Spotify playlist and my husband told me to change it that it makes him feel sad....he started crying even after I stopped playing it.....I’m here to read every lyric and try to understand why it makes him cry and now I understand

When I was fourteen I heard this song of Tracy Chapman, I wrote all the lyrics out in my school diary. I loved it so much. It is long ago 25 + years ago, Wow i was a child reading books of Stephen King and Dean Koontz and listening to Tracy Chapman and Queen. :) Seems so idyllic now. Hahaha.
Cody, you've done a wonderful job here. Thank you.

A wonderful timeless classic song! I can't believe I said that 34 years after I first heard this song for the first time and tried to sing along to it & by the last verse I was anticipating the next word and like magic it was a perfect song

Hmm...haven't heard this song before...She did such a great job with the lyrics and story building... Tracy gained a fan.
Wow, I don’t even know what to say about this video. So many memories came rushing back to me as I watched this. Good memories. Bad memories. Memories from when I was a teenager. Memories of those I have loved and lost. This is, visually, a very stunning and thought provoking video. Well done.
