It was formed in 2004 by the 4 major card brands because of the rise in credit card fraud
At the time it was formed, in 2004 Visa/MC lost some $750m as a result of credit card fraudulent activity and
And obviously that’s very bad thing that no one wants to happen,
with the explosion of online purchases in the last 2 years, it’s even more important now.
So in practice, a PCI Compliance survey is something that a business fills out proving that they’re following the latest security protocols for protecting cardholder data.
In other words, this survey gives you a pass/fail score based on the things you do at your business to keep cardholder data secure.
