- Asna Tabassum - USC's 2024 valedictorian who has publicly supported Palestinians - is speaking out after the university canceled her commencement speech, citing safety concerns.
Tabassum told Eyewitness News that she isn't buying the safety claim and said she wasn't provided specifics when she pressed university officials.

"Almost a one-way conversation - and then the next day they came to me, they gave me a call and said 'It's unfortunate, but you don't get to speak,'" Tabassum recalled.

Commencement should never become a divisive, fearful event. This is too hot a topic to be disrupting the ceremonies of all these young people who have worked for years to get their degree. She can go and use other platforms to spout off about her hatred of israel.

The purpose of going to college and getting an advanced degree at a respected University is to prepare oneself to go out into the workforce and to make a significant contribution to the advancement of The human condition in your particular field of study. Be proud of what you did and go out and make use of your degree. But if you decide you just want to be an activist and focus on politics than maybe you should have studied more political courses because you wasted your time while you were at a great university.

It’s actually pretty simple. Graduation isn’t about one person and it’s certainly not about a war between nation half a world away. USC isn’t allowing her to make everyone’s celebration about her own personal beliefs. If she could be an adult and separate the 2 she’d still be speaking but she must have made it clear that she was going to be a child.

Depends on where you are. When I was valedictorian, it was as the top student (not bragging it was a small class). But the story specifically says chosen, which has been the case for several commencements I have attended. For one it was a student body vote.

I am a graduate student in Japan, studying Frankfurt school, especially Walter Benjamin. I am in solidarity with students who stand up and speak out for peace, justice and human rights. Latest academism and education are focusing on issues of human rights and post-colonialism, so the students who speak out do nothing wrong and should be proud of yourself.

Disappointing to see so many ignorant uninformed comments on this post. She was class Valedictorian, and traditionally, she speaks because of outstanding academic achievement. We don't know what her actual speech would be about, but I seriously doubt it would be as platform for hate speech, or even the genocide in Gaza. It might have been about fulfilling the "American Dream" and how USC was an important part of doing so, particularly with the all the other obstacles she faced and conquored.
But we will never know because a Zionist student organization believes that anyone who supports Palestinian rights is "anti-Semitic." Zionism has been crontroversial ever since the idea took hold 100 years ago, which is why so many Jews, worldwide, oppose what Israel is doing, and American support for what is clearly a genocide. Judaism is a religion that uplifts justice and fairness, and the history of the Lakood party in Israel has been one of bullying, intimidation and murder. Yes, it was the Lakood party that assinated Rabin for signing a peace treaty with Egypt, decades ago.
Then there is all the issues with Netanyahu and his extreme levels of corruption.
But the simplistic response to anyone who criticizes Zionist Israel is that we are all anti Semitic bigots.

I am pro-Israel. But even more, I am pro-free speech. If the USC tradition has been to allow the valedictorian to give an address on a topic of their choice, then this young woman needs to be afforded that opportunity, and USC has an obligation to provide adequate protection for her and those in the audience. One of the things that makes Israel superior to its surrounding Arab neighbors is that, in Israel, you can criticize the government's actions. That is a value we seem to be losing in the United States.
