Thanks for stopping by for our mechanics & theme board game review! We're Amy & Maggie aka ThinkerThemer. We're an Australian couple with two very different perspectives of what makes a great board game - Amy (Thinker) is all about the mechanics and enjoys tight, competitive games, and Maggie (Themer) is all about the storytelling and the theme of the game, and the 'world' that the designer is trying to create. Subscribe to our channel to hear us talk in our reviews about these two elements of a game, and how well integrated we feel these are in delivering a cohesive and wonderful game experience.

In MP 1 movement was very difficult, completing your starting bonus card was difficult and the main winning strategy was completing contracts. MP 2 feels much more open.

I really liked the dice placement in MP1 but traveling was very hard and people who ignored it and pumped out contracts would have a much easier time winning then than people trying to travel as much as possible, but because of the recourse drain only completed a few contracts. I’m really hoping MP2 fixes that for us!

Hi there, I'm new to the channel and quite like your proposal of mechanics and theme sensations of the game.
I own MP1 and love it, is one of the top for me and my couple. I have to yet try this one one but since it came out, it felt that it is design for people that didn't understood the first, no harsh intended 😅, yet with the comments of @Aaron and @C Anderson, kind of confirm my theory. I have played MP1 24 times with no expansion, an still love the game, I think is one of the games with higher replayability out there. With only 6 plays won't be able to see all it has to offer, I have used all the characters and all are great, and most importantly you can travel alot with any but that's not the point of the game. As any great Euro you need to solve the puzzle and find which is the route for you in that specific game to earn the most victory points. And it hardly will be the same each game. P.S. I guess is obvious how much I love that game. P.S.2 también soy latinoamericano 😉

I’ve been looking to play this one. I too have never played the first one but am a big Tascini fan.

Marco Polo 1 was one I thought I'd love but ended up playing a half dozen times and was done with it. It was too restrictive, tight and ended up feeling samey. It sounds like this one might fix some of what bothered me about it, linking the travel to contracts sounds much better. With MP1 depending on the character it was either travel or not and either way it didn't feel by the end of the game you did much.

I owned MP I and ended up getting rid of it. It seemed like the kind of game I would enjoy, but it just fell a bit flat for me. Very excited to try MP II (currently sitting on my shelf of shame). Also can’t wait for the Grand Austria Hotel KS. That felt like one of those games that could use an expansion, and we haven’t pulled it off the shelf in a while probably for that reason. I will never play GAH at 4p again though!

I love that you didn't enjoy MP but still purchased MP II....! I agree re: GAH, it's good, but it needs a little more variability for us so can't wait to see what Waltz brings!

@@ThinkerThemer Well, I heard it was better in some ways than MP I, so was thinking it might “fix” what issues I had with it. (Similar to not enjoying Terra Mystica but looooooving Gaia Project.) Fingers crossed...

Where would you rank this one compared to Newton?

We have not played Newton unfortunately! A glaring gap in our gaming experience!!!

thanks for the review. similarly, i never played marco polo despite being a huge fan of GAH and lorenzo il magnifico. i heard a lot about the original but never quite got to it. i really like this game and what it offers by comparison to what i understand of the first one, but have only played the solo variant due to the pandemic. looking forward to playing it with others sometime. btw, posting here because your reference to the marco polo swimming pool game reminded me of this insurance commercial from the US, which always makes me laugh. thought you would enjor: ruclips.net/video/zjoAy5AJkwY/видео.html

Haha!! I just found this John sorry for the late reply. Geico ads are so clever, we don't have them here but they make us laugh when we are in the states. Thank you for sharing. By the way, Lorenzo il Magnifico is still the best of the three games you mention in our opinion!!!
