    • @stevemoose76
      @stevemoose76 7 месяцев назад +4

      5 cents here in the US is called a nickel, mainly because of the metal is was made from. But in the 1800’s we also had large cents and even 3 cent coins (called trimes!). I’m wondering if a US soldier was wandering about in Perthshire during WW2?

      Yes, the cone shape with a broken bit on the flat side that may gave been the base of a loop seems to be a plum-bob. It could be very old. In use one way or another since early Egypt and Mesopotamia(?) up until today.

    Hi. The big bronze chunk looks like a casting spruce that feeds into two axe heads. The dip at the top is what we call a shrinkage pipe. Basically when molten bronze cools down it volumetricslly shrinks, this face has no Liquid Metal to feed into the contracting lump and therefore leaves a sink and hollow tubular pipe. I’m a foundry metallurgist and keen detectorist and have recently cast Bronze Age axe heads from a copy of BA bronze axe head moulds found by a friend in Somerset. Great casting project, Somerset detectorist YT channel if you’re interested.

      Amazing info Anton. Followers on this channel never fail to amaze me!! It’s got the look and feel of being ‘old’ and given the local history I was hoping Bronze Age. I’ve been lucky to find a few Bronze Age items including an axe, a rapier and several fragments and all have that same ‘green’ colour and weight to the items so I appreciate you fantastic knowledge
      Many thanks

    • @bretthess6376
      @bretthess6376 7 месяцев назад +1

      By it's color, definitely a Bronze Age piece.
      If the man says it's a sprue, then it is. My first thought was, a casting that failed, perhaps from the metal being poured being too cold.

    I know I’m prone to aiming high with my guesses, but that big chunk of bronze looks like part of a little statue. The torso of a male figure
    Could be in armour, hence the distinct indent where the head and neck would be.
    The asymmetry of what would be the shoulders is one clue. Also the angle of the straight side (which is where I think it would be connected to the next section- the hips) suggests the pelvic tilt of a standing figure. Plus there also appears to be a hole on that side, for the rod that would hold the parts together.
    That’s my guess

    Yes! We call a five-cent piece a Nickel. It was largely made of that metal. Unfortunately the date is often rubbed away on this coin. There is an "Indian head" dime (worth ten cents - of silver) and the nickel (five cents). Now the nickel has Jefferson's profile and the dime has Roosevelt's. The penny is still of copper (but less and less of it). All of our old coins seem to be in circulation and we just luckily get older coins as change or from a roll of coins. Of course collectors often check out rolls of coins at the bank for sport. I adore watching sorting through and love it when you have a lucky day. Your good humor is abundant at all times. Best to you, Wanda

    Wonderful finds and all with a common theme though spanning eons of time, so interesting what's hidden beneath the soil, such mysterious treasures speaking to us from the past. I was saddened by the buffalo nickel as on the reverse it depicts a Native American with the word Liberty, sadly they were practically wiped out by the colonizers and those that were left put into reservations and forbidden from practicing their culture.

    You probably found out we call that American 5 cents coin a "buffalo nickel," which was made 1913-1938. We still have nickels. Ever since the first one was made in 1866 the nickel has been made of 75% copper and 25% nickel, from what I read on Google. Greetings from South Carolina, USA. I greatly enjoy your detecting expeditions!

    Enjoyable as usual
    For those that are not aware on buttons coin badges ect , the crowns are different and can date an item , though practice I can approximately date by the crowns shape as it tells me what king or queen it represents
    IE QVC can vary , Edward is different to George V and V1 QEC different from Victoria’s
    I found this knowledge handy when collecting buttons in the past

    G'day John.
    The slightly hour glass shaped metal object with a hole through it crossways could be part of a cylinder priming cup.
    Such cups were features on many early internal combustion engines fuelled by petrol.
    A handle to actuate a rudimentary flow control valve was located in the transverse hole through the long axis of the primer.
    Before starting the crude old engines which had only the most rudimentary carburettors, raw petrol was poured into one such cup on top of each cylinder.
    The valve on the primer was then opened to allow the measure of fuel contained in each cup to enter the cylinder below in order to help the engine start, then the flow control valve was closed again to contain compression before hand-cranking to start it.
