Mel Gibson is literally one of the best actors of all time. Even when playing an absolute deadbeat, you can so clearly see the humanity in him: That he wants to be better, but he's grown so comfortable being a disappointment that it never really comes to fruition, like pretty much everybody who's a deadbeat in real life. The layers to the emotions he expresses, I've never seen them in anybody else my entire life, in film and reality.
