Actually there's NO ONE who can give A SOLID answer to the question: what is A SCALE??! I will tell you. A scale is a group of notes in a specific order. But guess what many groups of notes ARE CALLED SCALE. SO we need another naming to differentiate between them and this name we have it in ARAB MUSIC 'MAQA0M'. In Arabic music we have two names 'Sollam' which is the equivalent of SCALE and we have 'Maqam' And I think this is would be helpful to differentiate between each unique scale! So Maqam is refered to the feeling regardless of the following of notes behind each other That generates in the listener. And in my opinion This is the most ACCURATE definition of a scale. It is all about the feeling and degrees of openness/ closeness, brightness/ darkness. Etc. Those feelings occur because of the INTERVALLIC STRUCTURE of each one. So A scale is not just a group of notes in a certain order. It is also the INTERVALLIC TONES between those notes. SO WHEN THERE IS A DIFFERENT INTERVALLIC STRUCTURE THERE IS A DIFFERENT SCALE. There are more degrees and relative scales to major and minor scales and they are unique scales as well!! ✌️🇵🇸
Even the word scale refer to a stair in Arabic In English It means A sequence of SUCCESSIVE notes. Observe that successiveness in it is very present in it's very meaning. So you cannot listen to a song and ask which scale nope that's wrong question It's THE FEELING OF WHICH SCALE? IS MORE ACCURATE Q. Many scales have own feeling. And every feeling can be in certain scales and many Scales have SAME FEELING... The problem is that 'Scale' is a very limited definition.

@@salmam2493 in western music they use the word 'key' to refer to a scale but with a specific first tone. So when they say C major scale, They mean the major scale (specific intervalic structure) and add the 'Key' to tell you on which Tonic pitch. The scale remains the same, the key can change to Give another starting point to the scale. That's All.
