Rip Current Dye Tracking

- Rip currents are among the leading causes of surf injuries along America's coastlines. Learning to identify rip currents is important safety skill for swimmers, surfers and ocean enthusiasts to learn. Scientists from the UNC Coastal Studies Institute and Kill Devil HIlls Ocean Rescue recently used flourescein dye to track rip currents within the surf zone.
That slowness is very deceptive. This only shows how the dye travels through the current and that the current actually is there, the force exerted against a person, especially a moderate swimmer, is substantial. Fantastic video.
It's a very slow rip current by the looks of it (even when speeded up)
Yes, extremely mild. But it demonstrates the phenomena.
sped up*
Anyone else realize how high it is? Slow the vid down to 0.25 and it's closer to normal, then that's where you can better judge how strong it is

NOW I finally know what a riptide is... I think. Looks dangerous
That one is slow but there are ones that can pull you out to sea in a very short time
@@tanyaerskine7657yeah I heard swimming sideways to beach is best option
A rip current is not the same as a rip tide.
@@inquisitvem6723Yep, but if ur tired out just try to float
Eff, I almost drown in one of these when a friend and I went swimming in Lake Michigan on a red flag day. I swam out too far to help my friend get to where he could touch, and next thing I know I’m being pulled away from shore further and further, my strength diminishing by the second. First time I felt I would die if someone did not save me. Someone did save me.
I didn’t know what red flag meant. My friends “knew” but they didn’t really KNOW.
Many occurrences like this in early adulthood has made me addicted to the truth and to making sure for myself. I do not just take someone’s word for pretty much anything.
Most people cannot be trusted.
Doesn’t it eventually stop pulling you out though, so a good swimmer with endurance will eventually swim back to shore? Also if you have a life jacket on, you’re all set right? Some I heard will swim sideways to get out of it.
A scene from Ghostbusters 3: Slimer Goes to the Beach
I was terrified at first that it goes out to the sea, then a midly relieved as it comes around
This is just a small ‘mild’ rip. Don’t ever think a rip won’t send you out to sea. Because they will.
@@Fuaarrkk O.O
@John Smith you ever heard of a current with some over 50 knots like one in Canada? That’ll finish the job
No one:
DDOI: Hello everyone, this is YOUR daily dose of internetㅡ
This is very cool to watch..👍👍👍
Could a cheap & natural dye be marketed to swimmers to test an area for rip currents??
I doubt anyone would buy it.
This is the problem with humans.... always want an easy way out. Just learn to read the surf and you’ll be able to identify rips
not hard to learn how to read the surf
@@Fuaarrkk if creating and using tools to increase our certainty and consistently is the "easy way out," then I better not see you using a screwdriver, driving a car, using a compass, using the weather app, or using Google Maps 😂
@@PowerfulKundalini sure tell that to ones who died while learning it by experience
Easiest way to tell a rip current is to look for water pulling back on itself
Is this an animation on top of the real footage?
Hello Rombout, This is all the real footage. We used a fluorescein dye to track the rip current.

Hi, I'm Issei Mori from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Currently, we are working on a rip currents detection algorithm and found your video very interesting. Could you possibly give us permission to use this video on our paper?
Yes.
No you’re under arrest
Great shot, makes so much sense! would you mind if we used this clip in our water safety course?
Can you disclose the amount of fluorescein that was used for this? I'm considering to carry a small vial of it when scuba diving, and it would be great to know what amount creates such an effect. Of course "more is better", but there's no need to overdo it... ;-)
Is this dye ok for the environment?
What a silly question lol, you really think they didnt check that first.
Nope. All the ocean is dead now. :(
I kinda enjoy them and other currents you can experience in the ocean. If you can relax and realize that you aren't going to beat the current swimming directly at it and can collect your thought process without freaking out, and can just remain calm, you are just trying to figure out the puzzle. I grew up being in the water and being a competitive swimmer, I have been a beach lifeguard and I can tell you by experience that most people have horrible swimming abilities, add in almost any negative situation to their already limited abilities and you will get a drowning, or someone in need of rescue, where some will excel and be perfectly fine, others will falter and fail, it all comes down to preparation and remaining calm. What is the first rule in any survival situation? Remain calm, those who can remain calm will most likely survive their ordeal if they can keep a level head.
Question: in addition to remaining calm, if you happen to be a subpar swimmer, does it make sense to just float and trust that you will be deposited back on the shore or simply swim parallel to the shore?
I heard the best thing to do is to watch another video
I used that rip to take me out so i could ride the wave in....
I don't want to dye.
Simple to understand the wave 🌊, If there's no wave i think those no wave near in land if there's no wave those part is deep part that's we say it's dangerous to people did not know the true meaning of rip current
OR, you can just study how the ripcurrent pulls sediments out into the approaching surf!
