Hello sleep coach! Your videos have been extremely helpful for me. Ive been experiencing some sleepless nights about 1-2 times per week for the past month. This journey began due to some extreme anxiety surrounding a health issue with my father. At the beginning of the month I found myself extremely tense and unable to loosen up. I also formulated my entire day based on my sleep schedule and trying to "prepare" for sleep. Since following your page I have since realized there is nothing wrong with me and that it is just a process of letting go of control. Over the past month I feel as though I have made significant progress in regards to day-time performance and overall anxiety. I have even begun to be able to relax and "rest" even though I am not sleeping. Even though I feel like I have made progress and have had several nights with good sleep (sometimes too much) I still run into problems with residual anxiety and sometimes the thought of what I experienced in regards to insomnia is troubling for me. Even though this is still happening I feel as though my anxiety has dropped from a 10/10 to a 3-5/10. I hope that I am making progress. I know that "doing" is the incorrect term to use but is it helpful to see myself as making progress or do you think that could induce any sort of performance anxiety. Thanks for the videos!
Matt! Thanks so much for sharing this, I’m soo glad to hear that the videos have been helpful 😊! What you said about trying to prepare, then going to seeing that it’s like breathing… nothing that needs preparation or effort, this is the way for sure. And you know, I think you’re just taking note of the fact that there’s less struggle and less anxiety. I don’t read anything here about trying to speed it up or wondering why you haven’t seen more progress… it’s all a very insightful message here. Keep “doing” what you’ve been been, or perhaps keep not doing, and the brain will start to fully see that’s there’s no threat or danger and then there’s peace of mind and peaceful sleep. Stay in touch now!!
The approach described in this video is in line with the mindfulness and the power of now by Eckhart Tolle. Basically you are the observer of your thoughts and surrender to what it is in this moment. It's a great approach. Yet it may not be very easy to grasp for some people. The sleeping education to address the cognitive distortions in the CBT-I stresses the coping thoughts, which in my opinion, is far easier to understand and implement. A major part of CBT-I is cognitive restructuring, if it's done correctly. Rewire your brain is never easy. But it can totally be done by patiently retraining your brain.
Lotus Li Hi Lotus Li and thanks for this insightful comment. Completely agree with you about how the surrender approach can be very helpful but, it’s hard to start off there (and maybe you don’t even have to go there!). Are you a therapist yourself?
The struggle is REAL, going on 20 years of this despair, hopelessness, nothing works, been on every sleep med. My Dr does not know what to do with me. Ambien, nothing. Cannot function.
Hi Stephen, you know, this awareness that the reactivity is what extends the game… I think this is so helpful… thanks for sharing this and I believe awareness like this will lead to where you want to be
Yes! Did one of us say this? I can’t remember but this is something I’ve been pondering a lot… I will make a separate episode on this soon! Thanks for the comment Lucia!
Hi Bando, I’m quite sure Trevor had lots of sleepless nights… if that was the reason, consider tuning in again, maybe the 5-6 hours was how it started. Trevor is a great teacher 🙂
Hi TL. Sorry to hear this but glad you’re here. The weird answer here becomes to not have a goal or aim for any number. In other words, taking the timeless approach. Wanting to know what time it is and how much you slept is very natural. Remember that insomnia comes from a place of problem-solving. The human brain is basically a problem-solving machine. And that is for safety reasons. Another word would be a survival machine. You can say that the brain is a survival machine or a problem-solving machine, it’s really the same thing! Now whenever we have a problem, our brains naturally go into problem-solving mode. And a natural first step is trying to get some sort of control of the problem. When it comes to insomnia, that translates into knowing what time it is. Because it seems like when you know what time you wake up, how much you slept, how much time you have left to sleep, how much more you sleep now compared to a week ago, you have a little bit of control. But in reality, it’s the desire for control that causes trouble sleeping! Because unlike a tangible physical problem that you can solve easily with problem-solving, insomnia is a perceived threat, it’s not a tangible problem, and the more you try to solve it, the more trouble you have! So this was just a long way of saying, not knowing what time it is or how much you slept are very powerful steps towards letting go of control and letting go of problem-solving! Not knowing what time it is, not tracking how much you’ve slept, not keeping track of how long you’ve had trouble sleeping, not predicting when in the future you will sleep better, all of those or would I call the timeless way. It is a super helpful way. It’s not easy because it goes against what your brain habitually wants to do, but again, if you take this path, it will greatly help!
Cool! I’m new to his teaching but, yes I do find that I learn a lot. For anyone not familiar, his writing is very “spiritual”, when I first started reading I must admit I was a bit skeptical because it sounded a little “out there”. But then, it all made sense and I’ve come to find his style very pleasant!
The Sleep Coach School yeah I think it’s because spirituality has the connotation of being a little woo but in reality his spiritual awakening was only to be completely present which is not woo at all. In his book the power of Now he talks about this. Just about truly being present instead of being in your head all the time. I really resonate with that. That true spiritual enlightenment is just being in the now.
Ernest Rillman Ernest, she’s such a rock star!!! I just ordered her first book, she’s my new hero, so cool! Thanks so much for letting me know about her. It’s amazing how all teachers I listen to really have the same message, and disappointing how to this day so few get to hear it... anyways we will spread the word on Dr. Weekes!
Hi Voggvogg, thanks for the care you show Trevor, and I know the content here could be so much more helpful… if you have ideas, let me know. It’s a work in progress. Thanks for being here and commenting especially since so far it hasn’t been helpful…
@@thesleepcoachschool8192 Thanks for your comment, Sleep Coach. I will let you know. I appreciate your efforts. Admittedly this is an exceedingly difficult and multi-faceted problem to solve; kudos to you for working on it!

The correlation and timing of this video is nothing but amazing to me.
As if I invited it.
Wow!
neil fishman I thought you might say something like that 😊 I’ve learned a ton from Trevor the two times I’ve spoken to him!
You both are so great and so helpful! Thank you for sharing and doing what you’re doing❤️❤️
😊 thanks so much for the support 🙏

My reactivity to this gnawing anxiety in my stomach, when I'm about to sleep, extends the game every time. If I could bet on it, I would.

Insomnia is like the equivalent of a mental auto immune disease! Lol

I stopped watching when he said that his insomnia is sleeping ONLY 5-6 hours 😂

Haven't slept in days and he gets 5 hours ? I would love to get 5 hours

We’re countless days that you have zero sleep ??
I have this problem over 5 Year's now
