I love how they switched up what plants he was growing because the fires were too dangerous, and instead these just straight-up explode every time a single drop of water gets to 'em, which is to say all the time.
Being a botanist in this game is almost like being an explosive expert.
Unless you are cultivating tomaco or Mudraptor poison. Those are so far the most harmless ones. If you grow a lot of them, you can clear a merchant out of their money. And if you want to waste some, just craft some pipe tobbaco with it.
The joke was better at 4:19 in the VOD IMO
Originally it was along the lines of bed saying. "Criken's basically saying, 'if you don't meet my demands I'm gonna plant a fucking zucchini.'" Which to me was a lot funnier because of bed's delivery.
Dr. Crikeman has gone through an entire character arc in these past episodes.

Can someone explain to me just WHY his plants explode? What is even the purpose of them?
Depends on which one you're talking about. When not selling the fruits for money at stations pomegrenades can be used for medicine but can spawn mutant fruits that blow up/cause fires while the salt bulbs can be broken down for sodium in crafting, though since they have a ton of sodium they react like how pure sodium does to water in real life.
There are 2 plants that can explode :
1. Mutated Pomegranade
2. Salt bulb aka salt vines
Explaining :
1. Pomegrenade plant sometimes produce a mutated pomegrenade that explode upon the slightest of impact, means they explode when they just dropping down from the plant.
2. Salt bulb explodes when they are in contact with water.

Pomegrenades have mutant variants that explode when they break, salt vine bulbs react to water like pure sodium does in high concentrations.
