I am taking my first Amtrak trip with my husband next week from Memphis to New Orleans. We have a Bedroom sleepliner. I got it for the experience. Great video!!
I’ve done the City of New Orleans as well, and man…19 hours on the train is not long enough. I love it, and love train travel to the max. Everybody is anticipating the extension of the Sunset Ltd to Mobil and eventually back to Jacksonville the way it used to be before Hurricane Rita.
I've done some Amtrak (I'm Australian). 1: From San Fran to Denver (30 hours) in coach, which was made ever-so-fantastic by the people I met in the viewing car and the Parks staff who come onboard to describe the area we travel through. TOP train trip I've ever done, because of the company I met. 2: From New York to Atlanta in coach. Nice trip but nothing outstanding. Was expecting lovely scenery but it wasn't anything special 3: West Coast Seattle to Los Angeles. "Business", which has really nice seats and little features like reserved seating and no hassles at check-in. And again, the scenery was spectacular, both through the forested areas to the north, and the ocean nearing LA. 4: Washington to Orlando. Roomette. Not worth the cost; claustrophobic, room attendant that didn't want to be there... My neighbouring room-mate was the only part of the journey that made it fun. Again, scenery was restricted and often seemed like a dumped-car yard when near civilisation. Now looking at doing this trip, most probably coach. One thing that I WOULD suggest is to eat in the dining car if it's on that route. Proper meals on crockery with table-cloth and flowers, and the opportunity to meet travellers from all over the world. Dining car dinners cost dollars, but they are damned worth it.
Before hurricane Katrina, the Sunset Limited was a through train from Los Angeles all the way to Florida. After the storm and the tracks were repaired. Amtrak never pursued, restoring the line east of New Orleans. So now the train is just terminated at New Orleans. It’s sad but understandable. The sunset limited was really, and still is one of the most delayed trains in the system. Stinks there’s no longer east directly. Got to make a connection.
Wow I definitely didn’t fully know the extent of that. Thank you for the info. Maybe one day they’ll bring it back one day. I feel like I’ve heard chatter about it
Glad you have the experience. Next time, try the Viewliner II bedroom sleeper cars and they are brand new, they are better than the Superliner cars. These can be found in east coast so give them a try and you will be pleased. Glad you enjoyed your trip. Amtrak is suppose to restore full traditional dining on entire network sometime in 2023. The reason train was bouncing because the land is not that strong due to water/swamp all over and thats the common in the south. Once you pass Jackson, MS, everything is smooth.
One of the last Great Train Stations that was built before passenger rail died. I seen a video of the Crescent leaving NOL and there was like 50 P42s sitting there because they weren't needed.
Recently had a roomette on Empire Builder and made sure to take a shower- it was a cool experience! Not everyone can say they've showered on a train 😄 I absolutely love taking Amtrak
I had the bedroom on sw chief and Empire Builder, worth every cent. Had roomette on Coastal Starlight, it was fine, I just prefer my own bathroom/shower.
Um trains like the Coast Starlight, Silver Star, Silver Meteor, the Auto Train amd the Northeast Regional, the Vermonter fling between New England and Florida or Washington and Florida don’t go Notyh amd South but ear amd west? TYVM for letting me know.
Those do go north south. However this route according to the Amtrak employees I was talking to is directly north/south. The others are angled. Don’t shoot the messenger lol
Good Morning America how are you? Don't you know me I'm your native son. I'm the train they the City of New Orleans. I'll be 500 miles down. Before the day is done.
I love trains but I didn't think it through living right beside this train track! Nothing I hate more than the 1-130 am horn right by my house every single night..oh well live and learn
Rode coach #58 Memphis to Chicago 9/30. R/T 10/6 #59 back Memphis. All trips after dark so didn't think sleeper cost worth the $. This train is selling out both ways it appears.
Matt I enjoyed your video riding Amtrak's City of New Orleans . I live in Vicksburg Mississippi now and was hoping to take that trip one day I would leave from Jackson Mississippi to Chicago . Do you think the cars and rooms are Walker or wheelchair friendly? Thanks Johnette
That’s a really good question. The hallways are fairly narrow so I’d have to say a walker would be more likely than a wheelchair. I believe most rooms are second level but I’m sure Amtrak has a way of helping assist. Check the website because I know for sure details would be there. And if not give them a call. I hope you’re able to embark on this journey and enjoy it.

That would me awesome if they did! That area needs train travel.

I like the old trains. The food was fantastic too. Meet lots of cool people who are retired and just take train trips.
Meeting people is the best part. Everyone has a story.

Awesome. Thank you for all that great info. I didn’t know the viewliners were the updated sleeper cars.

Great video, good B-roll of the scenery, and you were quick and to the point! Will definitely subscribe
Thank you for the compliments and I’m happy you enjoyed it

I think I only saw two but was cool to see
@@mattsmoments2 ruclips.net/video/ymqnAHrvT9Y/видео.html go to 3:33. Theres like twenty sitting there.

Me too! 😃
Wow that’s looks like so much fun , but the room looked a little small
Wait until you see the other rooms offered lol
Wow, great editing Matt! That shot on 7:54 with the trees all around the wagon are just so cool!
Great work! ✈
Thank you!

Traditional dining needs to keep the brownie and blondie brownie!
It was nice having my own shower and a big room.
That brownie was so good. I haven’t had the blondie. Sounds delicious.
Agreed. I won't use the communal toilets and showers.

Dang that’s a bummer. I imagine that’s tough if you’re a lite sleeper
@@mattsmoments2 oh yeah and it's the amtrak from Chicago to New Orleans twice a day..fun fun fun
I want to take a cross country trek - chgo to Seattle- never been on a amtrak- here's hoping!
You should. It’s quite the experience. Not long ago I did a vlog on that one too but still in the works

I definitely don’t mind coach. I have to experience them all lol. I agree that I too have noticed trains are selling out more.

There is an accessible room on the lower levels of the Superliner cars
Thank you for that info! :-)
at 0:55. Check the sugar that got blown onto the mirror. :-) The Beignets ar OK at Cafe Do Monde, but the coffee is dis-gust-ing. Try PJs.
Naw this was solid that day. The worst coffee is airline and Amtrak
USA airlines
@@mattsmoments2 Well, you're half right. If looking for the worst coffee, just leave off the "Airlines" from your last comment.
Hi Matt can you split your journey and. Stop off in Memphis for two nights
I think the only way to do that is purchasing two separate tickets. New Orleans to Memphis and then Memphis to Chicago
Diesel passenger trains in 21st century that too in USA. Irony!
Yup
Another train with a host stuffing his face with food, no thanks, bye-bye!!!! JMS
Sounds good keep scrolling
