I think the the really tall guy in a light colored coat is my uncle at 4:00. He was US Secret Service visiting, dignitary, protection unit in 1959 then went on to be one of Kennedy’s personal officer. On the day of the assassination my uncle was the advanced team in Austin.
I was really surprised when halfway through the video i suddenly hear a track of my Grandma playing the saints go marching in on the electric organ! LOL Groovy!
I nice historical episode of Khrushchev visit to San Francisco Bay I'm glad he came in 59 than 2022 I bet the United States would be a laughing stock when he gets back to USSR
@@braininavatnow9197 you right wing morons are just mad because the USA isn’t the crap hole Trump would make it. SF is free- you can’t say that about Russia. Russians have to kiss Putin’s butt. You thought that was going to happen here with Trump- but we booted his corrupt, lying, authoritarian butt out of office.
Actually, if this happened in 2022 - Khrushchev would be embarrassed that his communism failed, and he would also be embarrassed to know that Ukraine was independent and kicking Putin’s butt to remain free and independent.
@Doom San Francisco is no more a failed city than Mississippi and West Virginia are failed states. Yes, Putin is getting his butt kicked- considering he thought he would have Ukraine by now. And don’t forget, Russia also got their butts kicked by Afghanistan- and that’s when they were still the USSR. Do you think Ukrainians are any less determined than the Afghanis were? Russia will never be able to hold onto Ukraine- they will eventually pull out just like they did in Afghanistan.
I actually saw him when he made that trip. I was 5, my parents walked down to Bayshore Blved in San Francisco to see his motorcade, After that some older kid on my block was telling me that Khrushchev was in his hotel room dangleing an Atom Bomb outside his hotel window. I coudn't sleep that night.
Despite everything... and I don't say this lightly... in America it was much better, we lived, we still had the strength to have a goal and achieve it... today? Total NOTHING... We have to wake up, go to work, finish and then maybe go home if not start another job. Then go to sleep, first just some tv. FANTASTIC, then start the same... like variables and constant repeat and repeat.
I watched his limo go by on Van Ness Avenue. Couldn't see him because the secret service were sitting with their backs to all the windows. He was the bogie man of my adolescence.
Gee! For a US Coast Guard Commander @13:06 to shake hands with the Soviet Head-of-State [First Secretary to the Communist Party], was an impressive honor for that USCG Commander to receive; which also goes for the junior officers, too, that Khrushchev shook hands with.
Interesting how him and the current leader of Russia are not really big guys. You don't have to be a big guy to tell you wait around. But you think of the iron curtain the hammer and sickle the coarseness in which they have lived in to certain extent still do. Kind of figured to be a brute of a man running a show. Now with that being said if a smaller guy can't be a brute he can still be brutal.
Great music, first of all. Looks like 1959. I seem to recall that Khrushchev thought there should be more trees on the major streets. 🤷🏼♂️ He had his poo poo attitude, of course. Reminds me of DJT today. Go figure.

@Doom the only reason Nixon met with China is because he heard that the Australian PM was fitting to be the first western leader to meet with them, so he sought to one up the PM.
Remarkable to see this in color film, as black & white was still a dominant format in that era, especially so with TV news.

Great historical video!
Amazingly rare footage! Khrushchev must have been impressed! Sad to see what's become of the "City by the Bay"!

The messes of today were made by the system we relied on then. There is no "good ole days" to go back to.
Capitalism will do that to a person 😊

Ole Nikita never did get that visit to Disneyland he so highly desired. That was a running joke in the US in the early 1960s.
He was a lot more impressed with Iowa, you will recall.

Hitler wasn't a very big man
He seems like a jolly enough fellow........a 40 of vodka and some cucumber sandwiches with ol Niki............

Before hippies ..lol
@Dennis Wilson Did they " hate" America?
My grandparents escaped from Soviet union did not believe hippies were real they thought it was a joke ..
I don't think an American president would have been brave enough to do what Khrushchev did.

This music is quite bothersome
That's a lot of cabbage.
