For non-electricians who ask the difference between neutral and ground, I tell them the neutral is the operational ground and the ground is the emergency escape. Most of the time this suffices.
I never want anyone to think of the neutral (Grounded) conductor as anything related to Equipment Grounds. Entirely different functions with specific commonality.
