I used to go to the same pub in the early 80's - it was a rough part of town but on the weekends always lots of people around making their way through the city. Hobart is small enough that it wasn't unusual to bump into friends on the way home, and to that end I sometimes walked home alone - I never felt isolated, and rarely unsafe. It was just how things were back then.

As to being a penal colony, indeed some states were, South Australia had no convicts and yet look at the weird murders that come out of there. If the police are not confident that the jury will find him guilty of murder, then they settle for him pleading guilty to manslaughter - manslaughter has a shorter sentence than murder - better than him being acquitted and walking free - that's the system, unfortunately! In the state I live in (Victoria) a recent murder case has the public very upset - Borce Ristevski killed his wife Karen in 2016 and because the police can't prove murder, he agreed to plead guilty to manslaughter - he got a deal that could have him out of jail in 5 years! It's just been announced the the Director of Public Prosecutions is appealing the sentence, and hopefully adding another 10 years onto his sentence! Fingers crossed!

Well, why did the family say that the brown handbag wasn't her purse? Of course it was her purse; it was found at the last place several people had seen her standing. They didn't explain why it wasn't her purse (the buckle was different/different size/whatever.) That hurt the investigation. Why did the sister forget they'd been walking with those two men for awhile? Weird intelligence level.

We have an “injustice system”. It gets me so angry that we have so many pedophiles/murderers out on the streets because of the ridiculous sentencing they get. It’s time to get tough with them! They can’t be rehabilitated…. Put them in jail to keep the community safe!

It's not unsafe and there are plenty of murderers in our jails who will never get out.
This vile grub only got charged with manslaughter (which always results in a lesser sentence) because the cops couldn't prove whether Amanda drowned by accident or if this grub head her head under the water.
