Power issues with my ULPower 350is

  • I've been experiencing an issue that when I approach the runway on final at idle, then touch down and add power to perform a touch and go, the engine hesitates, the power drops below idle, and then jumps up to where it should be.
The working assumption was fuel starvation under load, so we changed up some of the firewall forward fuel system to reduce the twists and turns, but the issue remains - back to the drawing board!
If you have any ideas, feel free to comment below!

Matt, sorry I didn’t see this sooner, I went through similar power loss, my Air Master CS propeller confused the issue, it was the Throttle Body Sensor which governs fuel flow, when it begins to fail it floods the engine with fuel, the first symptom was ground personnel seeing black smoke in the exhaust. Numerous flights, 3 ending in full blown emergency landings, computer download showed it was engine issue, read by technicians at ULPOWER. I got new updated TBS and am currently doing test flights, seems much better. My field altitude is 5,200 ft, full power is not optional! N750SV

A great video Matt & good to see it performing well on views! Hopefully your channel will start to grow quickly now (as it deserves to do 👍🏼) 🥳

Nice video, thanks for taking the time to put this together, Thumbs up given, 👍🏽 Now if I can find a way to increase the engine and music volume while decreasing the running status commentary and ATC volume, it'll be perfect!

The visibility through that upper glass panel makes for a much more interesting view than in my Grumman!
"Can I put the fire engine away?" 😁😁

Will need to take you up one day it’s really something! Yea, that comment made me laugh, but also a reminder to myself there actually there isn’t a fire engine haha!

@Matt Lanham haha they often wheel them out for first solos...Yeah, I'd love to head up sometime. Let's see how many cameras we can strap to that aircraft 😄

Did you figure out the issue. I read about and saw images of the throttle position sensor contacts being damaged and causing engine stalling. Not sure what ECU you are running, but an ECU such as MOTEC allows you to record all parameters. Also they have dashes that do the same if the ECU has a can network. My second preference is Kanardia; they have engine data recording at an affordable price. If you are running a single ECU, I would not choose anything other than MOTEC, best reliability in aftermarket ECU's. You can trace engine conditions as much as 2000 hertz and it will alert you if a sensor of any kind falls out of its parameters. With so many inputs, you can have dual TPS on the engine also. Safe flying.

Might be an idea to delete your reply (and mine) just in case engine thieving scumbags are looking for a new target?

My 350is in my Cruzer sometimes stumbles on roll out after touchdown. Roger at Zenith says the prop has little inertia so idle rpm should be 1000 or a little more. If it is set at UL Power’s setting the engine may die which mine did before talking to Roger. Have you had any issues with the charging system installed as per Zenith instructions? I failed so contacted our US rep, Robert. He suggested moving regulator to the firewall and doing away with the connectors from the alternator to the regulator and connect the three wires directly to the directly. Of course you have to splice longer wires to the alternator output wires using best grade crimp connectors. I did all that and no more charging issues.

Hmm that's interesting, when you had it was it dropping RPM? I have thought about increasing the idle it's currently set to 850 rpm. One other thing that has been noted from others I've spoken to is I am running very rich, and the EGTs are low (not going much about 500, when it should be 750+) so planning to do a test around that also
Not had any issues charging, and the battery seems to be working fine as far as I can tell

@@pilotlanham Just a thought, but if you had a sensor issue, the engine management might be reverting to a default map, which would likely be on the rich side?

@@boydw1 Yea, I'm hoping to test whether it's the static port that may be causing it to be rich, will hopefully test that in the next few days weather permitting!

Do those glass engine panels have a “record” function? So you can review that and perhaps with a more detailed diagnostic setting? SD card onto a PC with related software? Laurie. NZ.

I managed to record a bunch of the data, but it doesn't really give too many clues as to what's going on at this stage - thanks for watching!
