A prison colony, like Australia or America, generally offered some sort of resource to people running the scheme. Maybe the exiles can be offered a shortening of their sentence by gathering resources?

Spell Casters: quests to find 'other' spell casters to 'trade/teach' each other spells. This could turn into creating a "Guild" or group of Spell Casters to start an academy/school to start learning all the mage that people know?

Couldn't make it to the stream, but here's an idea: if the portals are from different worlds, and the portals are one-way, will all of those worlds see and use the portals the same way (place to put the trash)? Maybe there are some worlds that see the portal as something mystical and sacrifice people or animals to some god they have connected to it, or maybe they are trying to understand it and are sending people as a discovery journey into it (because they possibly don't have enough resources in their own world anymore, similar to Terra Nova).

I’ve got a bit of a macabre humor and the “dumping world” just sparked a rather funny idea to me. The PCs are working for whatever power is doing the dumping, get framed for a crime, get dumped, but nobody knows where it goes. The players are thrown into this dark, swirling portal and as they come through, they feel the sense of falling for some time before they come out the other side landing on a pile of corpses. Looking down, they see the pile of corpse is stacked pretty high, looking up, they see the portal empties about ten feet over the corpses. Maybe while the party gathers themselves another body is dumped and falls on them and a new NPC is introduced. Maybe they see the portal convulse a bit, a sign of another dump, and a giant comes crashing through.
Dumping portal is an interesting core concept.

Bit late to this, but regarding wizard spells. If the OG world is dumping people through these portals, they could also dump "Forbidden Texts". Make it the equivalent to book burning, where magical could probably unburn a book usually, if they didn't throw it through a portal.

I watched this video about a year ago and have been ruminating about it since then. I’m finally getting ready to actually run a campaign based on this concept, fleshing out the world, creating existing factions formed from people sent there previously or even descended from people who were sent there years ago.

23:31 Honestly this creates a pretty great opportunity for magic using PCs, in the absence of spellbooks and established guilds they'll have to start *making things up as they go along*. Experimenting, inventing new spells with whatever scraps of information they can uncover, making mistakes during the process that do something completely different which inspires new spells, and swapping notes with whatever friendly spellcasters they can come across... all in the hopes of eventually putting together that Gate spell they need to leave this place. It's more work on the players and the DM (as most homebrew spells are) but you can be sure that the wizard that comes out on the other side of that ordeal will be unlike any other wizard they had ever played... I mean whoever would have thought you could create a magic missile spell with a pair of coconuts!?

    Important!!!
    Dairy free chocolate milk recipe
    Ingredients: 1 serving
    50g hazelnuts
    175ml water
    20g cacao powder
30g dextrose or 10g sugar, if you want a diet option you can also use 15g maltodextrin.
Put it all in a blender and you will have a creamy nutella flavoured chocolate milk. Use boiling water for hot chocolate milk. If you want it to be even fluffier you could also add a little bit of egg white
Disclaimer: i have not tasted Nutella or chocolate milk since i was 8 years old.

I was getting that "Predators" feeling from the get go, so I'm glad to see that was recognized. A few things that I thought of, since I already have a game world a lot like this...but which isn't a prison planet - although I think it should be now...
    - Access to spells comes from a lost or hidden source. The original prisoner of this world was an archmage or arcane group whose actions lead to exile. They *might* be long dead, but their knowledge or secrets may well be locked away somewhere.
This arcane group may have either become liches, mummies or the like to preserve their culture and "living" memory.
There may also be alien indigenous cultures here that practice their own form of shamanism. With regard to divine contact, it has to be asked whether gods are actually gods without limitations, or if the actions of mortals can cut this access off. OR, if NEW gods native to this world answer the prayers of worshippers of their particular domain. That remains to be seen, and could be a massive late-game reveal.
-With regard to native species, I'm less about "Avatar" aliens and rather prefer lizardfolk, yuan-ti, grung, thri-kreen and the like. Since "Predators" has already been mentioned, a jungle race of Thri-Kreen who mirror this culture would make for a great ongoing antagonist. Hybrid species might have originated at the hands of the villains mentioned above, so a half orc/half lizardfolk species called the lizork might exist, which breeds true in of itself.
    - Original access to things like weapons and armor might begin with primitive sources like wood, bone, stone and hides. My homebrew world of Embere has barely entered the Bronze Age, so there may be coveted bronze weapons and armor too. Dark Sun is also a great reference for stone age weapon design and use. The study of ancient cultures with which to flavour this outlay can help. Aztec macuahuitls, Hunnic composite recurve bows, the blowguns of the multiple Amazonian peoples, and the Zulu spear are but a few that could inhabit this world.
    - The stone ring(s) might be a source of inspiration for escape, but I offer this one counter-point. What if, even if they're activated, they just go to another prison planet? What if that prison planet is worse? I would also suggest that maybe it just goes to another point on this same planet. They may also serve as a way for new player characters to arrive.
    - Planet arrival. I have a few ideas here. Prisoners may arrive in multiple ways, and this could create mysteries on the origins of some of the fellow exiles. (By the way, Exile is a simple name for the campaign itself, but I digress)
For instance, if the players find the ruins of an abandoned wooden ship suspended in a tree - how did it get there? Conversely, the prisoners might be sent through the gate aboard a ship which then gets caught up in tall trees. This would also be a great resource for building a new community, using the pieces that remain to fashion a home or community.
What if massive fungi grow near the stone gate? Imagine what look like grey/green fungal "pillows" filled with lighter-than-air spores, and fastened to the ground via a thick vine-like "root". The characters would tumble our of the game, bouncing from "pillow" to "pillow" until they tumble through the brush to the ground.
( smart group might combine ship wreckage and a large fungal balloon as a n airship to explore the world... or place said fungal balloon within the ribs of a skeletal "whale" and fashion their own airship...)
Worlds based on survival are not new, but whose success is almost purely determined by the engagement of the players involved. Some prefer the challenge. Others want a more catered fantasy experience with expected drama and outcomes. The right group is essential.

Are you off of milk or off of lactose? If the latter, there's a great lactose-free chocolate milk. Darigold Fit Chocolate milk is lactose free and a pretty good source of protein. Tastes just like regular chocolate milk. I'm lactose sensitive and this doesn't bother me.
As for the campaign idea, here's what I came up using your springboard discussion: The "prelude" to the players coming to this new world can vary. Perhaps the victim of a failed magical experiment (an NPC or a player), perhaps a desperate spell cast to escape a dire situation, banishment from their world, etc... the prelude doesn't matter quite as much but the players can be given more control of it for their character's backstory. Whatever the prelude, the result is that the players find themselves in this strange world. A world where nothing is native. A perfectly blank slate of a world that through some means all "failed" portals, banishments, or other magical means of travel ends up here. When the players arrive it's a very living world with great biodiversity due to receiving organic samples from uncountable other worlds. The beginning is likely the players trying to understand what happened to them but if they are interested in the hook you can even have the campaign steer towards this world experiencing a fracturing of it's unique magical "fabric" or "core" and to save their new home the players can go on an adventure to discover the origins of the this world and how to save it.

I see this as a domination type campaign where the players are part of establishing a new society with their fellow criminals. Really lean on what types of governments would develop in this type of prison world. Do the most violent criminals form a despotic gang and take over or do they kill eachother off and the more petty criminals start to build a more democratic type system?

I think the planet should be a testing ground. If you prove worthy you can come back to your home.
As for magic, well the early mages didn't have scrolls to teach them. They figured it out. So have magic work like this. The characters come across something that sparks some magic in them. They take time to strengthen that spark.
During downtime they can train. There are no set spells. They players develop their own. That gives them more immersion.
For example: a scorched statue invokes a burning sensation in the mage. They focus and cause their temperature to rise. Later they meditate and build that feeling. Be one with fire and all that.
Then they unlock the ability to use fire. Have a set limit of spells per level but let them decide what the spells are. Let them create them.

What about a campaign to "create" a way to escape? Perhaps there is "ancient" knowledge (needed to be discovered) that can then be used to create a "portal/gate" to escape? (this would mean initially there is no current way to escape)

How many portals are there? Wouldn’t creatures who are already on the planet try to control them to recruit more “soldiers”? So cities would be created around them in some places? Or are the portals moving? Or is there only one and it’s almost a god like stone symbol that generates some religion or following? What would happen if the world becomes overpopulated and creates some form of world war? How many of these happen already? Clearly after war comes recession and rebuild so on what stage of the cycle our character would be “dropped” would determine the mindset of the whole area/ creatures?

Let the characters build up and amass to attack original world, then stop the campaign and make new characters on original world and lead them to stopping attack only then realizing that the attack they r stopping is the one their other characters are leading 😁
