    What I love about this is that the winner is not necessarily the one who finished first, but who did so with regards to the horse's well-being.

      @@catbatrat1760 ohhh awesome!! Super excited to hear what you think as you watch all the series. :D It was definitely an adventure!!! Our mares had done some small endurance rides in the UK prior to our Ireland adventure but to be honest they were both untested for a long ride adventure like that in many aspects (like saddle bags was a new thing for them). BUT we knew they could cope easily with the 30 km each day we were doing even though it was only walk for most of the trip. Not to mention how fit they were by the end of it all! hehe

    • @Jefferdaughter
      @Jefferdaughter 5 лет назад

      Ponies, a horse that stands under 14.2 hands is a pony. The 'miniature horse' label is mostly about marketing. Some people remember when show ponies were a really big deal, especially show Shetlands, that looked almost nothing like the Shetland Island ponies. A lot of hackney pony blood was introduced, and other crosses may have been made to produce ponies that looked more like riding horses and less like a small-scale draft horse, and to produce the high-stepping movement. (Though weighted shoes and other techniques are used to get the extreme motion with the forearm coming above the horizontal when they trot.)
      When that fad passed and the market bottomed out, it took awhile but the 'mini' horses became another equine fad. The American Shetland Pony Club, Inc owns the American Miniature Horse Registry. www.shetlandminiature.com/registries/amhr

      These horses and riders have wonderful relationships. Arab horses lived closely with people for no one really knows how many thousands of years, but the breed has a strong tendency toward interacting with humans. Endurance riders spend a LOT of hours training and conditioning their horses, as well as caring for them. They know and respect each other.

  • @logiclanguagelearningFrench

    So is the whole thing in trot? No canter other than end?

    • @Jefferdaughter
      @Jefferdaughter 5 лет назад +1

      The riders can go at whatever gate they want to, at whatever pace they judge to be suitable for their horse on that terrain on that day, given temperature, humidity, etc. (Humidity? Who am I kidding? They don't know what humidity is out there. :-) ) Riders usually canter a bit, but the trot is a very efficient gait for most horses.

    It's great to see horses that are truly fit. We all get used to seeing fat horses that spend most of their lives in stalls. Maybe with turnout in tiny paddocks. This is the norm in New England, anyway. Even shows reward fat horses over fit horses, (though of course not all horses need to be as fit as endurance horses competing in 100 mile rides). Note that, when the saddle is off, the ribs can be easily seen, but do not stick out. The hips are also prominent, yet have some cover. Yet people are charged with animal neglect or abuse if someone who knows nothing about horses drives by and sees a shadow of ribs. Fat horses, which is more unhealthy, or horses locked in stalls for most of their lives, no one cares so long as the stall is clean.

      @@MsVanorak Arabs do great in the mountain rides too. A lot of the ability of the Arabian is due to slow twitch muscles, good for long distance riding. TBs & QHs have more fast twitch muscles for bursts of effort. I don't know about English Hunters, but one of the horses with the most Tevis Cup completions (and it's the or one of the most difficult endurance rides) is a QH, but it wasn't one of the fastest.

    • @peterlovett5841
      @peterlovett5841 4 года назад +2

      @@MsVanorak Basically the English Hunter type is not good for endurance riding as it is too large and carrying too much weight. You are incorrect regarding Arab types for sprint/flat racing and they most certainly were not bred for battle charge distance but to endure long distances with little feed and water. The Arab was probably the first horse breed developed and the conditions of the Arabian Peninsular quickly culled the weaker specimens leaving a horse of around 14 to 15 hands, dense bone structure and light overall weight but ideally suited to long distance riding. Keeping your horse sound is what endurance riding is all about. It takes about 3 years to properly train up a competitive horse and knowing how your horse is feeling is a fine art for the rider.

      @@HEMI-MOMMA another great breed for endurance is the Argentinan Criollo! They aren't as well known in the US, but are amazing! In order for the horses to be in the stud book they have to complete 400± miles in 72 or so hours, only eating and drinking what they find on the trail. If they maintain soundness in the end, then they will be allowed in the book!

      They've changed their mind on the withholding water theory, and found hot horses do better with small sips of water starting immediately after the ride. In endurance, they're moving at a slower pace/ lower intensity, for a longer period, so they're encouraged to drink to stay hydrated.

    could someone explain to me why these horses have martingales and/or tie downs? Isn't that dangerous on trail rides, especially endurance rides? I know it keeps the horses head down, but why?

    • @morgangiess8114
      @morgangiess8114 7 лет назад +1

      Most of the time in endurance they aren't to keep the head down, but to keep the rider from dropping the reins actually. A lot of the time endurance riders will put the reins on the horses neck, or sometimes they may just accidentally let them go. If the reins were to fall over their head, you could imagine that could take time to fix, not to mention stop the momentum of the horse.

    • @debrajabs9523
      @debrajabs9523 5 лет назад +1

      This type of martigale is to ask the horse to flex at the poll, it used on race horses as other breeds that have a higher neck set. It does not work like a western martigale that pulls the whole neck down.

    • @jksherman5481
      @jksherman5481 5 лет назад

      Not dangerous at all, they are not very restrictive, just a reminder to the horse to not put head up too high, and to keep reins from falling, wouldn't work for me since I use split reins, but it does still work to gently remind horse to keep head in better position.

      Given that most are purebred or high percentage Arabian, and they are 'racing fit' with the lighter muscling typical of the breed, and no excess flab like we are used to seeing on most horses, they are probably closer to 900 lbs. Some may be less. Years ago a bay Arab mare that did well on the endurance circuit, including the Tevis Cup, carried a man and a regular western saddle (not the light endurance saddles popular today) and the mare weighed 850 lbs.
