About 15 years ago they used to have these larger plastic u shaped curler things that had a plastic end cap that I used to make these curls with. My hair was and still down to my butt and I swear I did this for a month straight....my hair looked like giant lions mane!! Boy I'm glad I don't have any pictures of it!

There are extra big hairclips maybe those work for you :) And I would try taking very smal sections, that way your hair might fit on the hairclip.
