What is OVF and OVA format?
Open Virtualization Format (OVF) is an open standard used to package and distribute virtual appliances or VMs. OVF is a standard, with hypervisors from VMware, RHEL virtualization and Virtual Box, supporting it.
An Open Virtualization Application/Appliance (OVA) file is a single file that archives all the files that make up an OVF. An OVA is a .tar file of all the files that make up an OVF package into a single .ova file

When running the CMD as administrator on a Windows Server 2008 R2 it doesn't show anything after running the import command. It's doesn't give an error, but it also doesn't ask for credentials. What am i doing wrong?
Try to run from client operating system such as windows 8 or 10 or you can use server 2012.
@@TechNV Thank you my friend!
hello; i got this error while trying to export from esxi 6.5 : Error: vim.fault.TaskInProgress
Completed with errors.
I have a question. In this scenario you are using a management laptop and saving the OVA directly to the laptop hard drive or external drive. Say for example, I wanted to connect an external drive directly to the ESXi server/hypervisor and save the OVA there. How could I go about doing that?
Basically ESXi will not detect external HDD directly, you have to connect HDD to any running guest so read write will be faster.
Thank you. Great tutorial!
Glad to help.
Thank you very much for sharing this.
Glad to help.
I was wondering, i was exporting a VM, but it failed and created a .tmp file in the destination, if i were to export again to the same location, would it use existing data from the .tmp file or start completely over?
Will check and get back to you.
Thankyou this was a lot of help!
Glad to help.
i am able to export the vmdk file having simple plan text name something like TAGFD but i am trying to export the file having name PDC01.TCNDAD.com it shows the error: vim.fault.FileNotFound and results completed with error. Any help for the same?
Hi Aashish,
Below is the explanation to your error message,
Partial Locators
When using OVF Tool, it is often not necessary to specify source and target types as long as certain filename conventions are used. It is possible to the ignore locator type and specify the source and target explicitly using the arguments --sourceType=... and --targetType=.
OVF Tool assumes the locator type based on the following rules:
n
If the name starts with vcloud://, OVF Tool assumes vCloud Director type.
n
If the name starts with vi://, OVF Tool assumes vSphere type.
n
If the name ends with .ovf, OVF Tool assumes OVF type.
n
If the name ends with .vmx, OVF Tool assumes VMX type.
n
If the name ends with .ova, the OVF tool assumes OVA type.
You can also get more information from OVF Tool User's Guide (code.vmware.com/web/tool/4.4.0/ovf), download pdf file refer page Number 30.
Dear Admin
Thank you for the quick response and the well explaination. I really do appreciate for your quick responses. I woild like to share the thing I did and I was able to export vmdk file. All I did was I removed the iso that was connected to my VMware & I tried with the same command and process and it worked for me. 🙏
That's great Aashish, keep it up.
Thanks for appreciation.
Nice video thanks 😊
Glad to help
Tell me, please, during the creation of the OVF file, where is the tempfile saved? I noticed that during the export, a file size of 0 KB is created in the destination folder. since the VM takes a lot of space, I need to understand this. thanks!
Good Question let me check,
@@TechNV Did it again and this time the tmp-file began to fill in at the destination. Thanks again.
Thanks for replying did not get the chance to check actually, u find solution yourself 👍
You are being hasty - it takes some time to refresh the size. But you can manually refresh and you will see it is in fact writing data.
@@TheDesertsweeper Yes, when we refresh we can see the file size.

Hi Tech NV, I have problem deploying ovf file. How do you deploy ovf file without network (exclude the network card) because the mapping from previous environment is not available in the new one. Attached is the error message
C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware OVF Tool>ovftool.exe -ds=datastore1 -dm=thin -n=SQLServer-restore "E:\ENJ\SQLServer-restore.ovf" vi://10.10.10.98

Can you please share me the original vmx file from source VM, also please share the Esxi version of both host.
@@TechNV the ESXi version from the VM was created is 5.5 and the version of ESXi I want to deploy is 6.5. I can only access to the VM but not the VCenter since it was on the provider side.
when import OVA file, it show the error with unable to determine type of source? How to solve this
Kindly check source ESXi Server IP Address while typing commands.
I get the error "Failed to create directory:E:...."
"Completed with errors"
what could be the issue here?
Hi,
Kindly check if you have proper permission on E Drive also space is available so you will not face any issue.
@@TechNV I tried exporting on C Drive and it worked fine, but E is an external hard drive and I couldnt get it to work no matter what. I checked the write permissions and they were ok, and there was enough space available but it still wouldnt work. Any ideas on why that happens? Also, your video is great, when I put drive C as the export destination it worked like a charm, and the procedure is very easy to follow, thank you.
Glad to help.
Let me check if any other settings are required for external HDD.
you could use gui to export ovf but what I need to know is how to export a OVA template ?
Yes we can use gui but sometimes gui also doesn't work so we use this method, for OAV it's more simple just change .Ovf extension to .OVA extension while exporting that it's.
@@TechNV tnx for the reply
When I'm deploying ova or ovf file on esxi I received error messages as unable to locate disk, pls help
Did you trying this via OVF tool, if yes kindly share error screenshot on mail yourtechnv@gmail.com
After logging into ESXi host following error is shown:
Error: Internal error: Failed to connect to server
Completed with errors
Suggestions???
Which browser and esxi version you are using.
@@TechNV I had this error when exporting ovf using the commands as shown above.
I entered my username and passwords for the exsi. and the error showed. however i figured it out... it was the issue regarding password. i had special characters and after substituting them with HEX value i was able to connect to the host and import ovf .
@@TechNV also i tried importing the ovf. but an error is shown : "Failed to open OVF descriptor"
also the nvram file is missing from my OVF export folder. Please suggest.
