This is absolutely beautiful. How easy it is for Mr. Previn to switch from classical to popular, and how effortlessly does Dame Kanawa convey the message in these poignant lyrics. Her voice is like a fine wine, better with age and we can get intoxicated by it.
I keep coming back to this recording, because it is hauntingly beautiful. The passing of Maestro Previn makes it even more poignant. Dame Te Kanawa is in my opinion the only opera singer who can make the transition from classical to popular so brilliantly. She does it in all of her songbook recordings: Cole Porter, Gershwin, Kern, Berlin, and this album. I admire her in every way, especially because of the work she does with young singers thru her foundation. Brava, and thank you for giving us a glimpse of heaven!
Dame Te Kanawa, did you really like my comment, or was it someone else in your staff? I mean, if it was you what an honour, knowing how busy you are, and you took the time to do it. Thank you so very much!
Kiri is one of the few artists that can achieve "crossover" satisfactorily,(another one is Sumi Jo.)Too many opera singers attempt (but fail) to change the tone and sound of their voice,Kiri is an intelligent singer that achieves something that is difficult for many other voices.
I think Julie Andrews did the cross over when she moved to the US and did a phenomenal job...bringing proper singing into film that was lost since MGM died.
Kiri te kanawa that sound of music symbolizes heaven and dreams you're perfection has drove my heart completely thank you for been an inspiration to us all
Lets not overlook Andre Previn's contribution here. Wonderful spontaneous sounding accompaniment by this most versatile of musicians. Here his partner is Dame Kiri. Also on RUclips, Previn and Julie Andrews in the same song and a different accompaniment. This song by Kurt Weill touches a 50 year old nerve. "I found a great variety of interesting things-But.." Not a more poignant line in any song I know.
This version is quite pleasing and moving. What Judy Garland added which could not be duplicated was the vulnerability which evoked emotion in the audience. Judy sang well, but certainly not technically as well as Dame Kiri. She had something else which couldn't be taught or readily learned.
Kiri's version is lovely, but Judy Garland's phrasing is unmatchable. Judy makes me feel every note in my heart and soul. There's a reason Judy Garland was called the queen of pop standards. She was simply the best!
When the date and time pass, you don't want to change. Some changes may occur. In general, good and bad can not be decided. The only thing that can be said is that you can be young and beautiful at any time. It contains many difficult elements. I think that being able to stay as it is is happiness of bliss. In this song, I am frankly describing how I feel distrust of my changing partner. You will be engrossed in the emptiness and loneliness of continuing to maintain your bare face.
Marcel Audubon I did try to find on the web, but I’ve come to the conclusion that it might be Previn’s own accompaniment version and there’s no version anywhere so far :(
@@nicklindsley7866 sorry, I meant the actual version Previn is playing. Since I posted this, I've done a lot of research and I suspect it's an improvised part by Previn and, whilst some of his poano parts for songs are puished, this one isn't... Unfortunately!
@@matthewnash851 yes, you could be right but I bet he first read exactly what was published. He is such a great accompaniest. Tommy Flanagan another. And an exquisite song.
She's phoning it in. No deep connection to the music and words. Unfocused it seems. She doesnt know the lyrics well enough to look away from the music.
Now THERE'S a performance that gives one pause for thought; stunningly beautiful from a perfect matchup.
Kiri is lovely as one would expect but Previn's accompaniment is simply sensationally beautiful.
Tears. Tears.
2024 and Dame Kiri is still touching lives with her art.
Bring tears to my eyes. ALWAYS.

I couldn't have said it any better. Truly something to love, as - by her expressions - does KtK
in the full documentary this is pulled from, as soon as the sound dies, Andre Previn says "the way you sing". Love that.

Fail? I don't think so. Listen Maria Ewing for example - ruclips.net/video/YffUN5Fh8Fg/видео.html

Just came across ths recording and WOW. This is absolutely stunning.
Perfection! Kiri is truly a gift from heaven.
✨✨✨
Magnificent rendition of a deeply moving song.
sublime

Just beautiful. xxx
I’m melting...
Wonderful. What a joy. Thank you for sharing.
Love this so much
Thanks for posting both video above and link to documentary at info box. :)

BRAVISSIMA!
This song is so good... even her voice...💖💖 Thank you
So beautiful...
O smooth sweet voice, feels so good!
Who knew Mr Preview could really tinkle the ivories 😮😂
Great singing yet listen to Judy Garland in the movie " I could go on singing" My favorite!
But Judy wasn't that great in Mozart ..!
Previn is my favorite accompanist. Another name is Bill Charlap, whose piano playing provides the most beautiful tapestry for any great singer.
So beautiful voice.. . .

Comparing apples & oranges is always subjective.

What a big big voice 🙏
hey, lovely vid
famous
Kurt Weill and Maxwell Anderson wrote this jewel. It was overshadowed by another hit from the same show, September Song .
Hasta Siempre Andre!
Lo ve ly !!!
Brava

FENOMENALI ENTRAMBI
Is this the same studio where she recorded West Side Story with Bernstein and McClure?
❤
Is there a transcibed version of this piano accompaniment part? It’s so lovely!
No. Why don't you get on that and share with the rest of the RUclips beggars?
Marcel Audubon I did try to find on the web, but I’ve come to the conclusion that it might be Previn’s own accompaniment version and there’s no version anywhere so far :(
he improvised on all his accompaniments
Does anyone know where I can get the piano sheet music for this please?

A complex lyric which never makes its mind up. Always interesting but never satisfying.
Emouvant, la voie vacille, elle est en danger, elle est magnifique.
While this is amazing. I prefer Julie Andrews phrasing she did with Maestro Previn live in Concert in Japan and in the US.
