    Phil. I’ve been turning for 8-9 years now. I stopped about a year ago because I was getting bored with round shapes. After watching you and your “odd” shapes I’ve been inspired to start turning again. And want to start making videos too. Keep it up sir. You are very talented!

    Although not your original plan, but as turners i believe the wood shows us what it wants to be and our job is to listen and create something that highlights the natural beauty that was hiding inside.

    Impressive. So it didn't turn out like you expected, still a gorgeous piece. I've always said that we only release the natural beauty of the wood, and the wood will tell you what it wants to be.
    Now I have to get some olive wood 😅.

    Well Phil 3PM finally showed up. Been looking forward to this all day and it was worth the wait. A real gem you uncovered there.
    Looking inside when you held it I saw a one eyed critter crawling from left to right. No it is not the pain pills. I have not had to use them the last 2 days LOL

    Olive wood is beautiful. The grain is outstanding. I worried as you kept turning the inside and I was saying Phil measure the bottom I thought he has to be close. Then you stopped and measured and I was able to breathe again. Nice looking bowl well worth the work for sure.

    That is a great piece.... It looked like you took a few different pieces and put in a mixing bowl ! many colors ..LOL
    So many times I turn and I changed the look I was looking for .... just happen yesterday .... I turned a pepper mill .
    Star of the show Phil ... yep .... The wood is part of it but you new what part of the wood to take off to make it gorgeous.

    An absolutely delightful bowl Phil. I don't recall if I have watched any of your other Olive turnings but even if I have I am now going to check them all out. As usual, a very considered piece with all the Phil Anderson considerations & sensitivity we have come to expect in your turning & in the production of your videos.     If you hadn't turned it the way that you did, you would have lost all that beautiful heart wood...
    That's experience... I get lost wondering what to do with pieces like this, so I try to imagine what would Phil do with it...

    I Love turning Olive, the grain is second to non, Outstanding work as always Phil, I have only managed to turn a little Yew mouse over the Christmas Brake, but more will be done in the coming weeks. Stay Well

    Right on! I sell bowl blanks and I tell folks this is the bottom. 90% still cut it backwards. I cut crotch’s or forks into rounds the figure ids in the center they need to cut down to the figure, not cut it away

    Unlike talking to my kids, i never tire of repeating myself in saying what a amazing job you have done releasing the beauty of that piece of wood, Phil, you really are my inspiration for wood turning, i can only aspire to be as good as you. That sounds a bit crawly but it’s true, you are a true guru to me. (Wish i could get my hands some olive, not common in the uk)

    Happy New Year! I’m glad I was able to watch this video! Not just because of the F&W, but because it’s a pretty bowl. Made me smile.
    I’m doing ok. Still have ups and downs, but that’s to be expected. I think things will start to even out after the Celebration of Life next week.

    Hi Phil! I turned some Olive wood pens for Christmas gifts a couple years ago. The wood was just beautiful and turned very nicely. I would love to get my hands on a chunk of Olive like the one you just did. What a beautiful piece of wood and perfect job you did!

    As a wood turner, I am glad the good Lord gave us wood that dictates what the turning will end up being. We can all have the best intent of having a design in mind, but the wood often times dictates something else and ends up being a nicer piece. Nice olive wood bowl, Phil. Thanks for sharing.

    Thanks for sharing all of your talent and experience. My largest bowl and spindle gouge is 1/2". I see you are using a larger one. What is the advantage of using larger gouges? Thanks and "keep 'em coming"!

      Thicker bowl gouges offer a great ability to resist vibration and allow you to take bigger bites of the wood, Richard. They are just stronger. 😊
