    Good storytelling. Much thought went into the puzzles and the solution, but the best part in my opinion was the pacing, and the characters. Well done, thank you.

    Anyone who wants to join the council must pass the test. No one has ever passed it

      Obviously the council was formed by the universes apparent 'alpha' species and then they put the order in place to prevent 'primitive' species from being entered into their elite social club
      Pretty simple stuff really

    If nobody's passed the test, why does anyone feel shame for not passing? A lot of these are neat and are just background noise. I know we're going to have our own AI generating these for us in the near future instead of relying on RUclips creators kind of spilling the stuff out. But these are starting to not be very good at all. It's just not a good story.

    How is there a council if no one has passed the test to be on the council?

    We learned about Kirk changing the rules of the un-winnable situation in 1982. Like, in the paradox test, we had already named them all. And the entire Threshold is just the Kobiashi Maru. The moral question of which planet to blow up is the good old trolly problem. But the solution was to realize it was a simulation, so he beat the designer instead of beating the simulation.
    There’s an idea floating around right now that we are all living in a simulation, Matrix-style. And I’ve seen a grant proposal for an experiment to try to prove if we are. The premise is that if we’re in a simulation, the computer must be less complex than whatever “real” world has those computers in it. Because they would only make a simulation to test something without actually DOING that thing. So, to simulate a universe, they’ll have to summarize stuff. The computer won’t make simulated atoms for a star 4billion light years away, because that’s just too much CPU for what we’ll just perceive as a white dot in the sky. Especially because that’s starting is one of billions of stars in that galaxy, and we’d see the galaxy as the dot, not the individual star. So the experiment is to find specifically complex situations, and look for instances of random number generation not being truly random. In effect, they’re wanting to beat the simulation, not beat the scenario in the simulation.
    It’s basically the premise of the 1998 movie “The Truman Show”. There’s an anime series out now, Shangri-La Frontier, where the main characters play exclusively poorly made games. There’s a fighting game where the players have a gentleman’s rule to only use bugs in the game, not the actual game mechanics.
    I say all that like I’m criticizing the story, but… HFY is all about humans being surprisingly awesome for whatever insane trait. Some authors do heavy gravity, everything wants to kill you, deathworld origins. Some focus on insane lateral thinking. And even if this is written by AI… there was a bit of the goofy humor found in the bad AI stuff (automated defenses going up because a human did a book report about how cute his ball python is when it wraps around his neck and torso, and professors resigning on the spot, etc.) the actual content is entirely believable. I mentioned Star Trek 2, above. In Star Trek 6 (1991), Captain Sulu is enjoying a fresh cup of coffee, in a dainty porcelain cup, as his ship is knocked around by a giant explosion. That’s no different from doing a crossword puzzle while failing to go insane. Though, I would have preferred if her t-shirt had an MC Escher print on it, not a math joke. His stuff was basically just Penrose Stairs anyway.

    What a stupid logic problem... if none have passed the test then who is running the council? Its a council which implies more than one species soo... how did it form without anyone passing the test?

    • @BB-ih3bk
      @BB-ih3bk 27 дней назад

      Someone had to make the tests. If you're trying to control the universe via "counsel" you have to let others have a "chance" to join so you make an "impossible" test a pre-requisite to joining. This avoids revolution as the rest of the universe has hope.
