I discovered Ween in 1993 when "Push Em Little Daisies" was on Beavis and Butthead and ended up buying Pure Guava and was blown away. In 2003 my friends and I were outside of Ween's tour bus when suddenly Gene Ween walks up and says "Who has the blow?". Unbeknownst to my friends I had some and he asked me to come on the bus. I ended up hanging out with Gene for like 20 minutes doing Coke and smoked a blunt. I hear Gene is now clean and sober......I'm now 7 years myself.

"I've come to a terrifying conclusion. Ween is my favorite band."
That's what happens. I had a friend who would play Ween, and I would get a little annoyed. Couldn't we listen to something more smooth. More polished. More digestible?
But as time went on, more and more I realized that not only did I want to listen to Ween, but they gave me unbridled happiness.
My brother was where I had been with Ween. But we decided to smoke some weed (neither of us could be described as pot heads) as we talked after a long time apart, and (with insidious malice) I put 12 Golden Country Greats on in the background.
While I couldn't help but sing along to much of the album (looking at you, "Help Me Scrape the Mucus off My Brian"), I did my best to continue the conversation. Then "You Were the Fool" came on, and I got the reaction I had hoped for:
He stopped mid sentence and said, "... Holy shit. This song is *really* good."
Yeah, bro. Yeah, it really is.
He may not love Ween now, but there's a kernel planted in his brain.

I think everyone who is into ween has a differnt story to how they stumbled across them, i personally found them through my dad, his story goes as follows
"I was roomates with my cousin for a while, he was the type to stay home all day and trip, and pain and such. he was a real interesting guy, but usally kept to himself. one day he asked to borrow his car, and his cousin (or roomate or friend i dont remember the story well) told him that of course, except he had a cassette stuck in the car.. and no matter what it would play, and he couldnt turn it off. the cassette was pure guava, and my dad was mind blown. as soon as he got home he raced to ask all about it, and ever since then he bought every single new album and CD." me and my dad bond over alot of things, weve always been close but music is the biggest one, ween is both of our favorite band. from staying in the kitchen and laughing and singing "Your party" as we scury to get dinner done to having deep serious convos as the Argus plays in the back. i love my dad alot, and ween has seriously been such a big part in both of our lifes.
i think this is really a good video so far and im only halfway through, i just really wanted to share, me and my dad are going to get boognish tattoos soon!

At the same time, I have a criticism of Ween. They typically use VERY simple song structures. Every song is very creative in contrast with the other songs, but within songs, it's usually a very A-B-A-B format. Even Transdermal Celebration... I can hear several places where it could have easily gone into a more complex "shape", if you will... but it never does. It always goes exactly where you think it's going, and I find that is a common thread in many Ween songs. You keep saying "Ween always surprises you!" and I think that's true in one sense: the genres/overall aesthetics of their songwriting. But within each song, they almost never surprise me, and that's always been one thing that keeps me from being a "superfan."

Both guys are sober now and up into only recently Mickey stopped playing every Wednesday at an event called (The Invitational). Dave their bassist is the sweetest guy who's in this other band called Old Rugged Sauce which is him and this guy Dave who croons over the mic. Of course there's Mickey's side project Moistboyz where he and Guy Heller tear the place down. But working at that bar for nearly a decade sure provided me with enough stories for a lifetime. Thank you for finally getting me into Ween! For many years, they were on my list of bands to deep dive but I never got around to it. After watching this, I instantly became completely obsessed with them. For the first 6 months I didn't want to hear any other music. Just Ween. Even now, nearly a year later, Ween occupies about half of my music listening. I saw them play the Beacon last HalloWeen and contracted my first case of covid at the show. The covid symptoms have faded but the long Ween symptoms persist.

GREAT VIDEO!!!! I know you said to not crucify you for not getting everything right but I wanna say something rq since I think it's pivotal to the development of Ween
You said something along the lines of that you felt the poor audio quality of The Pod and Pure Guava was intentional, but it wasn't exactly! They were just incredibly sick (in a literal fashion but definitely fits in the figurative way as well) and poor and couldn't afford anything else. Deaner has said before that then catching mononucleosis and being too sick to go out and do more was possibly the best thing to happen to them since it forced them to get more creative due to the limitations of their living situation. STILL AN INCREDIBLE VIDEO THOUGH!!! Everything was incredibly put. Kudos to you. < 3

In the early 90s I couldn't get enough of the "brown" and have loved pretty much everything they've done since. There are times when I don't listen to them but then I hear something and I get dragged back in for a deep dive. Had a chance to interview the guys before a concert at the Orpheum in Vancouver in 2003 (I worked for CBC Radio 3 and we were recording the concert for national broadcast). They were sweet and elusive. Hope I get a chance to meet them again one day.

I've been listening to ween since early 2020, Tried and True came on the radio and something about that damn song hit HARD. Quebec has been, without a doubt, a comfort album for me throughout the past couple of years, I've likely listened to it 50+ times through. I've wanted to give their other albums more of a thorough listen, but a lot of the reviews out there happen to be from people who have been LONGTIME fans, or people that just don't... get it. It might sound silly, but with all of the history behind the belt of the band and their fanbase, I couldn't help but feel "Oh, there's so much lore for me to learn, I'm here too late to this party."
SO TLDR; Thank you for such a comprehensive and accessible introductory video to this great band. You're awesome!

Quebec is probably my fave too, but 12 golden country greats... a musical genius friend of mine and I just put it on one time and sang the whole album to each other. You don't need a special occasion, though. White pepper is great if you're feeling down too... heck, I'm about to go listen to "Back to Basom."
I don't know. I don't want to overwhelm you. But either of those albums won't disappoint in my opinion.

My first Ween concert was in Calgary in 2007. I was on ecstacy and my best friend was on mushrooms. It was at a place called Flames Central and had a glass-bottom floor raised above a gigantic Calgary Flames logo. The bar was allowing people to take their beer bottles with them rather than using red solo cups for some reason (a practice which changed by the next show I saw there.) My most powerful memory from that show was witnessing people try to crowd surf during the HIV Song, only for the people holding them up to slip on the glass floor, causing them, the crowd surfers, and various other audience members to slam into that glass floor, which by this point was covered in broken bottles and a fair amount of blood. And to end the show they did a 45 minute second encore of LMLYP where audience members covered the stage in panties and bras. Claude got up from the kit during an extended guitar solo and tied strings made of bras all around the stage, draping them from the amps, to his kit, to the keyboard, etc. It was an amazing night.
I got into Ween in 2005 via God Ween Satan somehow. I don't even remember how it happened, but I'd guess it had something to do with me reading the liner notes to Songs for the Deaf and wondering who the hell Dean Ween is, reading about Ween, and then starting at the earliest album and working my way up. It always sort of blew me away that God Ween Satan had arguably the best production value of any of their early albums and was devoted to the goofiest songs, only for that production quality to fall off a cliff with The Pod and Pure Guava and only slightly recover in time for Chocolate and Cheese, and then blast back into the stratosphere in Nashville for 12 Golden Country Greats. My only critique about this video is you completely avoid talking about how Ween's album material was primarily just a two man operation until White Pepper, or anything about the other band members and their involvement, or that the country album was recorded entirely with true-blue legitimate life-long professional session musicians in Nashville. If you want to draw someone into that album, you have to lay out the pedigree of what makes it so special, and then throw them straight into the goofy shit like Piss Up A Rope or Japanese Cowboy. I have to confess, I live in cattle country, and every time I get the chance to show 12GCG to a Mennonite kid, Ween gains a new fan.

This is a great and surprisingly thorough introduction to my personal favorite band of all time. I love that you dived into not only the studio albums, but the live albums (which are indeed some of the best put out by any artist) and bootlegs. I saw basically nobody else outside the larger Ween fandom on other corners of the internet bring those up before seeing this video.
I personally think newbies should listen to Chocolate and Cheese first as I feel that it has the best of everything you can expect from Ween going forward in the best possible package, and Quebec should actually be one of the last ones someone should listen to. It was for me, and it only gave me a much deeper appreciation for how far the band's songwriting had come up to that point. In reality though, nearly any of their albums would be a pretty good place to start, except for La Cucaracha and maybe their earlier stuff.
Love this band to death. Seen them live 7 times, soon to be 8.

Gotta call them my favorite of all time, I couldn't tell you how but they grew on me ultra hard. The Pod's my favorite album of all time, its so vile and jank but also beautiful all purely from the limitations it was born out of. I don't exactly agree with some takes, I honestly love King Billy for some reason and most of the Friends EP for that matter, and I think White Pepper's their worst album (still utterly fantastic though), but either way its a hella cool thing to see that people have such varying tastes in the community and I like seeing different takes like this. I started in the Shimmy Disc days and lost track after the country album. Saw them live in an intimate space around Chocolate & Cheese. Thanks for going further with them. May need to check out their later library.

i love ween. i was introduced to them by an ex and i IMMEDIATELY fell in love with them, im talking damn near every song of theirs in my liked music after a week. they were all i would listen to (and still sometimes) for weeks at a time. i’ve seen them 4 times (was supposed to see them again in april but unfortunately they canceled the show i had tickets for 😢). every time i see them live it gets better. they don’t have a single bad song. best band ever 🥰

dude, I've been listening to Ween for over 20 years now and it all just feels like a huge slow burn into becoming completely obsessed with them. There were many songs I didn't listen to for a while till I needed more. Till I became addicted to wanting to hear what else these guys have to say. I really wish they'd do a few good lengthy interviews or something

Just from how much stuff is out there from the band, I consider Ween to be in the same ballpark of the great American cult bands of the 1990's and 2000's alongside Phish and a few others. Great video!

Not a phish hater at all but ween and phish aren't in the same league. Phish had maybe 10 good years and each album declined as well. Ween put out great albums all the way to the end (and Freeman as well as the DWG albums are all great too).

@@Frank_Reynolds__. really? I like all of phish’s albums I would listen to them start to finish but some of their songs have become redundant like fee, sample in a jar, wolfmanns brother, etc . But they will always have a place in my heart.

@@r1s1nggodz1lla it all went downhill fast after Rift. Their playing peaked a few years later but as far as the song writing it got pretty bad and continues to get worse. Again, I don't dislike phish. From 1990-00 there wasn't a better live band around. That's a hell of a run.
