    This podcast is an American treasure. I love seeing you guys have challenging discussions on polarizing topics, disagree on the conclusions, and then end by sending virtual hugs, and come back next week and do it again. This is what makes America great, free thinking individuals arguing and ultimately coming together for the benefit of all. We fall far short of that ideal, but it's awesome and we should never lose sight of it.

      lol. Is podcast quality more important than timeliness? The variance in quality ( IMO ) - (and dont get me wrong, all-in still way way above par on avg) - is the hardest thing to keep high level and, in the end, goes much more under appreciated. Proud that I haven’t missed one since started watching at like Ep 120 ish.

      Do you have any knowledge of the data on what's happening to our kids brain chemistry and social media? If so, you'd be disgusted with his pivot to make it seem like maybe it's just all the pills. I don't need more data on the link between social media use and mental health. He seems so painfully naive and it's this luxury fake intellectuals have of pretending everything is agnostic untill 99% of science proves it. He never once acknowledged the NYT article that was pulled up. He never tried to look up these things independently to say there is no proof of harm. The mental health is proof of harm. Now you ask about unique to tiktok harms, which I would argue is a strawman. There's tons of data on how tiktok is uniquely perversive in terms of the scale of the privacy invasion. Beyond that, you have to be really dumb to think the same people who allow their own citizen no privacy would certainly not spy on Americans en masse

Bush administration defined “enemy combatant” as “an individual who was part of or supporting Taliban or al Qaeda forces, or associated forces that are engaged in hostilities against the United States.” Yet in oral arguments of Rosul et al v Bush later that year, the government conceded an enemy combatant could be a “little old lady in Switzerland” who “wrote a check” to what she thought was an orphanage."

    It's crazy how composed and impartial David Sacks was during the discussion with Jason and Chamath on TikTok, even when he was outnumbered. His viewpoint on the government's exploitation of law bills is quite intriguing.
    Other besties, although experienced in business, seem to have less legal expertise than Sacks. Jason came across as an irate patriot, while Chamath appeared to be more concerned about his privacy.
    Of course, these reactions are understandable. But only Sacks was able to discern the loophole in the bill, which could allow the federal government unrestricted power over American companies due to the vagueness of the language and the lack of concrete evidence.
    I researched the educational background of the besties and discovered that Sacks is the only one with a law degree. He holds a Juris Doctor (JD) degree and spent four years in law school. No wonder he was so knowledgeable on this issue.
    It would be disastrous if no one was scrutinizing the bill or had the expertise to identify the dubious definition within it. I really admire Sacks' firm stance based on his legal expertise and his concern for the matter.
    But it's good to see different perspectives. So overall, a high-quality debate.

    • @monk866
      @monk866 7 месяцев назад

      What’s sad is it doesn’t take a law degree to know governments, both foreign and domestic, seek to centralize power. Sacks/Friedberg are the only ones using American ideals to simultaneously temper neo-liberalism and the public’s whiplash to autocratic tendencies. People will call him pro-china just like they call him pro-Russia with his Ukraine position.

      Sacks made undeniable points on why the language of the bill is horribly over reaching. I think 'banning tiktok' is still a separate debate that we can continue to explore. I thought they also did a good job highlighting the broader subject of overall digital privacy -- which is the real elephant in the room.
      Privacy is possible but it takes diligence and verification at every layer of the tech stack from the silicon up.
      This could and should become the norm for consumer electronics imho.

    • @HurricaneChise
      @HurricaneChise 7 месяцев назад +3

      Sacks is the only lawyer in the group, so he's harping on the language being too broad but I still think TikTok is in general bad for Americans. Makes people depressed, fries their dopamine receptors, and is owned by our biggest foreign adversary.

      @HurricaneChise 7 месяцев назад +1

      All he argued was that the language is too broad. Which is true, he's also the only lawyer on the pod so he really understands the implications of overly broad legal language.
      At the end of the day, an app that brainwashes 100 million Americans, shouldn't be owned by our largest adversary. That feels like common sense.
      And if you think I'm using "brainwash" too lightly, there is plenty of research on the effect all social media has had on people's anxiety, depression, and polarization towards other Americans.
      American-owned social media is bad enough, Chinese owned social media feels like shooting ourselves in the foot.

Chamath is uncharacteristically sloppy in his thinking (where there’s smoke there’s fire? Are you fucking kidding me Chamath?) Friedberg seemed genuinely terrified to even opine, so who knows what toes he’s afraid to step on. Sachs is the hero here. He’s asking the basic questions of the kind that should have been asked during the Patriot Act (non)debates (as he rightly pointed out) and he dismantled each of Jason and Chamaths nonsensical groupthink talking points one by one. 1. TikTok is created as a separate app from Douyin (Chinese version of TikTok) because of different content moderation criteria to comply with Chinese law (e.g. you can still search for anti-China content in Tiktok where it would be impossible in Douyin). Also, data protection is handled separately for these two apps
    2. Chinese people largely live on complete freedom as long as they don’t touch on sensitive political topics (assuming Chinese people have limited freedom in their daily life is common misunderstanding in the West)
    3. China and the U.S. are different regimes and have different approach on handling political content. Most educated Chinese people can still have foreign social media apps though via VPNs (understand its not ideal but it is very easy to set one up and VPNs are implicitly allowed in China)
    4. Most apps will listen to you in the phone if they are turned on in the background. Closing them off in the background every time might be troublesome and do American people really cannot understand this and make a choice on what apps they want to have in their phone?
    Just felt there were quite a lot of misunderstandings when they talked about issues related to China. And glad the Davids were able to make his points that are grounded and based on facts in my views.

    On AI's copyright problem: Just like back in the 70's when #IBM announced that they would offer a service to have IBM systems digitally store music and make it available via CD burners in record stores for a fee - the record companies said "I don't think so." Well, it's the same thing in our opinion with the use of training data by #AI businesses that plan on making money. Today's computers are creating derivative works from training data autonomously. But it is still derivative of someone else's work, therefore that work needs to be compensated financially EVEN IF that data is in the public domain.

    Chamath and Jason are being naive on the TikTok legislation and although Sacks is having a tough time crystalizing the issue; He is spot on with the questioning. The last time national security legislation was passed unanimously we ended up with the Patriot act which was ultimately a massive violation of privacy and ultimately a power that is abused to this day. This TikTok legislation falls in the same boat.

The 50-0 vote at committee only confirms that the language of the bill politically useful to both parties in terms of the powers it grants them. A few years ago I had been developing a horror film set in a Chinese electronics factory with people relatively high up in Hollywood. After phone call with my father, who was in Vietnam, facebook started showing adds in Vietnamese with with severed heads and mutilated corpses. Apple needs to find a way to have a microphone that can be physically detached from the circulatory with a switch. Funnily enough at the time there was no way to notify Facebook that their platform had been weaponised this way.

    3 points @ the TikTok ban: 1) Both Android &iOS allow open mic eavesdropping; 2) This hasn't been addressed, and won't, because our IC uses it and businesses use it; 3) I investigated this on Android with IG and found that giving the app Camera permissions implicitly enables the mic which effectively enables eavesdropping. It is noteworthy that there are no granular permissions for photos vs videos nor camera vs mic. Chamath is right about the unanimous vote, IC and no public evidence.The Davids are right to demand proof. Sacks' point about vague language and potential misuse are dead on.
