Only because his name is Machel Montano everyone finally realizes there is a genre named calypso? So other calypsoians who have been working tirelessly every year to bring pure calypso’s are not recognized? So we they not doing pure kaiso? The tents are nearly empty but we still continue to produce pure kaiso! The same energy over here for this pure kaiso should be sending over to the other pure kaisos!
@@kericepascallOfficial I understand what you're saying but, I believe more soca artist should also do a Calypso (kaiso) piece, as the younger ones.... Calypso is not something they're familiar with..... More soca artists doing Calypso (kaiso) would help us not to lose the enjoyment and foundation of Calypso

Beautiful song... very interesting how he breaks it down ....calypso like a mother soca like son .... clever how he says you see the features of the parent in the child like without calypso there would be no soca ...calypso as the old generation and soca as the new .... I really hope people understand and appreciate not only the song but the message that he is sending... we need to love and respect and keep calypso alive just like soca.. without one there could not be the other ...
Brilliant analysis and that is what the "course" is about, how to use literary devices in this instance - Metaphor as Machel so rightly says in one of his verses.
He sang about his evolution in the art form if you liisten well enough, he used metaphorical analogy to sing an inspiring song about himself..... its genius really...kudos to him

Heard this melody so damn many times over the years. Nothing exciting here, neither lyrically nor musically, but watch they give him win, whether he deserves it or not. His gatekeepers are always in place.
I thought no one was going to say it! These comments are baffling to me - are people so unaware of the rich variety of calypso and soca talent that has ALWAYS been out there that they really think this is innovative and groundbreaking in any way? Have any of them ever listened to David Rudder's "Calypso Music" for an actual example of a beautiful, melodic journey through musical history? This sounds like a primary school assignment - "Write an 'old time calypso' about the history of calypso and soca". If people really think this is genius then maybe this is exactly what we deserve as a people.
Its much deeper than the melody. The great storytelling in the lyrics and the little modern musical elements (like the "zess"drumm pattern) incorporated into the song makes it all very meaningfull. Calypso is not just a song, its an art. Plus we know Machel will always give a great performance. It have nothing to do with gatekeepers. He simply has all that it takes through years of hard work

I hear what you're saying bro but the reminiscent melody is part of what draws people to this song. Humans tend to prefer melodies that are nostalgic and familiar. This song hits the spot in terms of that. I give it an A+
No better song for Dimanche Gras, Soul of Calypso is quite captivating. The lyrics and melody intwined make this song a classic.

Love this. Well written. I applaud Machel for making this wholesome contribution to the culture. I would like to see more artistes make positive, well-written compositions (both soca and calypso) rather than solely rum-focused or overly vulgar songs. Our young people need better examples.
