Shawn Stockman has the honor of being the first Pentaholic, but I don’t think the other two judges were far behind. The band members, really just kids at that point, we’re eager to absorb as much constructive criticism as the judges could dish out, and it showed as they progressed in the competition. Never was a Kanye fan...but with PTX upgrade, I actually enjoyed their version. Avi & Kevin are off the charts!
Pentatonix has introduced me to many songs that I had not heard of before and it's funny when I hear the original on the radio I say "that's a Pentatonix song!" 😂.
Don't forget to check out the Dartmouth Aires 5th performance since they were the toughest competition (I believe) Pentatonix had in the show. It's the main reason why PTX were risk takers...there was some great performances by the other groups.
Not a Kanye fan either, but part of what they showed is their versatility to handle anything thrown at them -
First time i heard this it wasn't my favorite either, but it grew to be one of my faves, The technicality is amazing.
When I was watching the show, this was the song that I knew that would win!

Interestingly, PTX have made a studio version of this song - the only one from the competition - so I suppose they really liked it. It the only Kanye West song I know but I think its great. Love the power of the PTX rhythm section but actually Kirsty and Mitch did a great job at holding the centre too.
Can't wait for you to see episodes 7, 10 and 12!!!! I agree this wasn't their best , but I think, for me at least, it was just the song itself.
It's funny because I watched this series when it was on, and I remember not feeling this one as much even though I thought they did a good job. But now, I think it is really, really good. Took me a few listens before I truly appreciated it. I am so glad you are going through this series. I wish someone would do reactions to all of the opening numbers from this series. The level of talent when you get so many acapella nerds together in one place is astounding.
Another Christmas song you might enjoy (oh who am I kidding they are all great!) is SIlent Night. I will just say WOW!

You didn’t think they’d choose this song if it wasn’t hip hop week, but funnily enough this is the only song from the sing off that they made a studio recording of. For some reason they never released it but it’s on RUclips and it’s better than this as they slowed it down a bit in the recording. They also do a great cover of Kanye’s song Coldest Winter. Also very good.

Their live performances seem to get blocked less often. I highly recommend Little Drummer Boy from the Arsenio Hall Show. I've never seen anyone else react to that particular performance and it is awesome.
i remember watching this with my mom, she didnt know the song, and I told her, this will either be brilliant or a disaster....when they were done, I told her the were the winners of the show.
Shawn Stockman's attitude was that, yes, he was being paid to be a judge so he would fulfil that duty, but the REAL reason he was there was to have fun. It made some of his comments incredibly delightful.
From here on, Pentatonix goes nowhere but up.

To win this singing competition to getting a record deal and then getting dropped from the record label to superstars. Bet that record label been kicking themselves all this years.

$200K and a recording contract. Then weeks after they win the record company pulls the contract because they "can't promote a Capella". Then why was it even a prize? The whole contest was a Capella groups! Still makes me mad!
Yes I SOOOOO agree. This was the third season of the Sing-off so it's not as if Sony didn't know the whole thing was about finding the best a cappella group. Makes me mad too. That said, the rejection lit a fire under PTX and made them start their own RUclips channel and smash it. It amuses me that Sony came crawling back to them a few years later and signed them to their prestigious RCA label!

While I agree with the sentiment, the actual answer is that Sony underwent a management change and it was the new leadership that wanted to move in a different direction.
I'm so glad you're continuing this Sing Off journey. It wasn't my fave song either -probably because I don't actually like the original song. I'm looking forward to the upcoming reactions cuz there are a couple of really stellar pefformances on the way.

And here I am, Pentatonix always makes me happy. This is a song I wasn't familiar with so I'll say this version is an upgrade, I really am not familiar with Kanye music. I couldn't agree more about Avi and Kevin, always magic from those two wizards. Nice for another lazy Sunday. As always thank you for the work you put into the video and commentary

The next week is the glimpse of just how great they are with medleys. All of the groups had to pick a superstar, 3 songs, and perform. PTX was the only one who really mixed it up, kind of like they do now, but not quite where they are now. You'll see. Another group chose Queen, and there were some things that just didn't work. It was good, but yeah. Video killed the radio star is where PTX just started going, and the other groups were just trying to make it to the finals. Not to say that the others weren't good, but ptx definitely had the it factor. It really comes out in the 12th performance.
For some reason "Video Killed the Radio Star" gets blocked the most.
One of my favorites of the series is next up. So awesome.
I loved what they did with this song! At the time I was like, wowzers this group is gonna put acapella on the map, which is what they did! I think it was ironic that they chose to leave out the rap because we now know that both Mitch and Scott can rap their faces off?!?! 😂 Also $200 K and a record contract, the record contract being very important, and they dropped them within just a couple of weeks. I love a great comeback story, and that is what they did, they moved forward, pushed on and look at them now! I hope it makes these labels stop dropping these groups. Or maybe not, sometimes these contracts lock them into ridiculous terms? 🤔 T ✌🏻
I read that the showrunners warned PTX after they won that the studio might f with them and their album. Apparently, the studio treated the two previous winners poorly in not supporting their albums in any way. Of course, they didn’t expect to be dropped completely, but they were preparing for something bad.
I'm not a fan of Kanye, either, but I apparently am a huge fan of remixes of his songs... because I love this one and Kris Allen's singer/songwriter version of Heartless from season 8 of American Idol.
