    Pacific Trucks and Trailers is one of the most iconic companies born in North America. Of Canadian origin, this brand managed to develop some of the toughest and most reliable trucks in the forestry and mining sector. However, during the 1970s, this company managed to enter the South African market, creating one of the most powerful and durable trucks ever seen, leaving an indelible mark on the history of heavy transport.     Thanks for a peek back in time to that of the big, solid, dependable rigs, built for decades by a focused regional manufacturer, that knew what heavy-duty, meant.
    Hayes, Pacific, Kenworth & the occasional Corn-binder, are what used to be some of the work-horses, when logging was more active.
    My late Uncle Elmer , drove a big Pacific, off-pavement logging truck for 15 years in the interior of BC.
    It was immense, with pre-load trailers, that had 14 foot-wide bunks. It only ran one trailer at a time, because the roads were not wide enough, since the logs they hauled, were up to 44 foot in length.
    There was always a trailer on the landing in the bush, so that he didn't have to wait around while it was being loaded, which could take up to an hour.
    One feature that was standard on all logging trucks in that area, was a water tank for keeping the brakes cool. The one on his truck was 10 feet wide, 2 feet, front to back & 10 foot tall. it took 15-200 minutes to fill, with a low pressure fire hose.
    It had 2 of almost everything that a regular logging truck had; 2 huge external oil filters, 2 extra-large external air filters, 2 fuel tanks, 4 exhaust stacks, the tires were foam-filled & the cab was more like being in a locomotive, than a logging truck.
    The bull-board above the cab was 2-3 feet wider than a regular truck & the whole rig, trailer included, had a fitting abundance of spot lights & clearance lights, to make damn sure that you couldn't miss it coming at you, because, that truck didn't back up for anybody.

    Something you missed in your video is that the Pacific P-series trucks were named for the height of their frame rails. So, the P-9 would've had 9 inch rails, the P-12, 12 inch, the P-16, 16 inch, etc. That's how they were able to make the first P-12s so quickly, because all they did was build a truck the same way they had built earlier trucks, just with larger frame rails. that, plus they were used to all their trucks being custom jobs.

    I find it strange that Coast Powertrain acquired all the rights to the legendary and respected Pacific brand but decided not to build any more new trucks when there were probably various lucrative opportunities to supply them. They say they have the capability to rebuild old trucks and make any required components so why restrict their business to mainly parts sales?

      No manufacturing facilty exists. Although the last one was built in a shed, that's not the way to assemble oversize vehicles.

      Compared to modern HD trucks with smaller, more efficient diesel engines and up to 1000 t pulling capacity the concept of road going mega truck is more than outdated. In fact, this digging into history serves to entertain old farts who live their lives in stories of yesterday while tomorrow is already passing by outside.

      @@franktechmaniac7488 There is a big difference between a modern ultra heavy-haulage truck designed primarily for on-road use and a truck designed for heavy-duty off-highway use on forest tracks, mountain trails, the desert, Siberian tundra, etc. The only true modern off-road heavy-duty trucks are those built by companies such as Titan Spezialfahrzeugbau or MOL but these are not typically designed for logging applications and come with very significant price tags. For remote areas of the world, simplicity, strength and durability are often more important than having a modern fuel-efficient engine with complex electronics and restrictive servicing/maintenance requirements.

    Pacific’s were bringing logs to my deck to this day! woodprep kinleith pulp & paper, tokoroa, new zealand. cool video👍🏽

      Here’s an interesting thought - No brand exists!
      Take Apple - Yes you can buy things with the Apple logo on it, there are people that work for Apple, and they drive each morning to a big building owned by Apple, where they might get yelled at by a person who is the CEO of Apple, and in a dusty vault somewhere there may be a piece of paper certifying the incorporation of Apple as a company…… but there isn’t anything you can point to and say “That, is Apple.”

    Not sure about the South African ones, but in Canada they had watercooled brakes
    The maintenance is actually not difficult at all. 2 friends (now retired) currently restore one.
    The empty weight of the truck equals to a fully loaded modern era logging truck

      Are you talking about off road verses on road weight because that don’t sound right. Off road gross weights are still a lot heavier than empty weights of off or on road weights.

      Those monsters were all off highway ( in Canada).. A few are still in service and if they relocate them to a new loggingvsite, they need special permits and escort/pilot cars if hitting a public road.. Its the size of a loco anc a ordinary highway truck looks like a toy besides them

    Rotrans already reverse engineered the old P12 for refurbishment. Extended the life by 10 years.
    They are known as Big Whites on the road , the later D100 while more modern still does have the charm of the old guard, still seen at Richards Bay Harbour or on the way to the highveld to powerplants and Rotek

    when these were new back in the 70's there was nothing really that competed with them , nor built anything as heavy duty and there's archives in South Africa of them actually hauling over the 370 tons in tandem without issue best heavy hauler ever built on the West Coast 👍

      @@matthewbrooks5072 well that’s a cool thing. I’ve never used Celsius before. That’s cool to know. As for the batteries yes it will be interesting to see how they work. Edison has said that the truck has a built in battery temperature control system to draw heat away if they are to hot and also to warm the battery if it is to cold. Where a normal truck will just idle all the time the Edison trucks diesel generator will be able to turn on and off as power and heat are needed. Same with the fuel tanks to stop the fuel from turning to jell. But as of right now that’s all just the plan and idea we will just have to wait and see.
      Something else that I have been wondering about is the regenerative braking system. If they are loaded with logs coming down a muddy or snowy / icy road with the regen wheels just lock up and slide? Or is there a way to allow the wheels to still turn while being able to slow the truck safely and still recharge the batteries off the motors. I’m definitely going to keep fallowing to see how it goes.
      Are you a trucker in that same target market of off highway trucking?

    South African Railways was actually a governmental department (pre 1994, ran like clockwork), still is in fact (nothing works) but more than half the railway tracks -yes, the tracks, have been stolen.

    2:28. What flag is that? If you wanted to get the South African flag, I think you got it wrong, and taking into consideration that when the order was delivered South africa at that stage had their old flag. Orange white blue with the union jack, old Transvaal and Orange free state flags in the middle.

    Canadians want, and Canada, needs more homegrown brands, such as Pacific, like we used to have. We used to be a great manufacturing nation, and it's a shame how much has been lost to outsourcing, or bought out and replaced with foreign brands.

    It's a pity because they were good trucks. Had them here in New Zealand. All working in logging. Some off road and some carting on road .

      Freightliner bought out Western Star Trucks, closed the Kelowna factory & moved it all to Oregon.
