  • Folk Songs of the Philippines - Sa Kabukiran Filipino traditional folk song composed by Manuel Velez - Arranged by Rayben Maigue / Performed by by Lara Maigue (Soprano). "Sa Kabukiran" Kundiman translated as "In The Countryside" is a famous Philippine folk song popularized by Sylvia La Torre under the direction of Leopoldo Silos. The traditional music of the Philippines, like the folk music of other countries, reflects the life of common, mostly rural Filipinos. Like their counterparts in Asia, many traditional songs from the Philippines have a strong connection with nature. However, much of it employs the diatonic scale rather than the "more Asian" pentatonic scale, with the exception of indigenous people ritual music. Traditional Filipino music is reflective of the country's history as a melting pot of different cultures. Among the dominant cultural strains noticeable today are Hispanic, American and to some extent Chinese, Indian and Islamic. It is thus difficult to strictly classify the whole corpus of Philippine music as either western or eastern. A frequently used system is to classify it according to ethno-linguistic or cultural divisions: for example, traditional Tagalog music, which is somewhat more Hispanic in flavour, differs from Ifugao music and Maranao kulintang music. As part of the Paco Park Presents: Pamana ng Musika - another online edition of the musical soiree and Catholic Mass Media Hall of Fame Awardee for Best Cultural Program. This online concert in celebration of National Heritage Month shall feature the Soprano Par Excellence Lara Maigue, a singer-songwriter and classically-trained Soprano whose talent has been witnessed by audiences both locally and internationally, having had performed as a soloist or side by side the biggest concert artists in the country. Lara Marie Moscardon Maigue (born June 7, 1991) is a Filipino singer and songwriter who won the 2017 Aliw Awards for Best Classical Performer and the 2018 Aliw Awards for Best Female Crossover Performer.

    Sa kabukiran walang kalungkutan
    Lahat ng araw ay kaligayahan
    Sa kabukiran ay walang kalungkutan
    Lahat ng araw ay kaligayahan
    Ang halamanan kung aking masdan
    Masiglang lahat ang kanilang kulay
    Ang mga ibon nag-aawitan
    Kawili-wili silang pakinggan
    Kawili-wili silang pakinggan
    O aking buhay na maligaya
    Busog ang puso at maginhawa
    O aking buhay na maligaya
    Ang halamanan kung aking masdan
    Masiglang lahat ang kanilang kulay
    Ang mga ibon nag-aawitan
    Kawili-wili silang pakinggan
    Kawili-wili silang pakinggan
    O aking buhay na maligaya
    Busog ang puso at maginhawa
    O aking buhay na maligaya
    Sa kabukiran walang kalungkutan
    Ang mga ibon nag-aawitan
    Hah, hah, - - - - - - -
    Hah - - - - - -
    Sa kabukiran walang kalungkutan
Ang mga ibon nag-a ha ha ha ha ha ha a-a-witan

Wow! I can't believe that as professional musicians and music patrons, they should have acknowledged the origin of this classic Cebuano 'balitao'. Yes, they mentioned Manuel Velez as the composer but they failed to mention that he hailed from Carcar, Cebu and the song was written in Cebuano language in its original form. There are many classic Cebuano songs which have been translated to Tagalog language but never been properly credited such as Rosas Pandan, Usahay, Kasadya Ni'ng Takna-a (Tagalog: Ang Pasko ay Sumapit), etc.

It would be great if Tagalog singers sing this in Bisaya, in Bisayan accent. How wonderful it would be.

A Cebuano song by a Cebuano composer

  • @toiletholder
    @toiletholder 2 года назад +5

It’s not a Tagalog song. It’s Cebuano. It was composed by Manuel Velez from Cebu. The song was originally recorded in Cebuano by Lilian Velez. The Bayanihan Dance Co. seems to be the only non-Visayan artist that seems to be aware that it’s a Visayan song. They recorded it in Cebuano. This is extremely frustrating that they keep giving Tagalogs credit for this song. The website that linked me to this video goes in-depth into the history of the folk songs they post on their page EXCEPT FOR THIS ONE! They made not one mention that it was a Visayan song or that Manuel Velez is from Cebu. I’m convinced that they just want to claim the Spanishiness of this song for themselves. They want to believe that Tagalogs are the most Spanish group of the Philippines, even though Cebuano (and other Visayan languages) has more Spanish word than Tagalog and our music sound more Spanish/Mexican in general. Akoy Kampupot is another example. Same composer. But credit is always given to Tagalogs for it.
