Mrs. Chase uses words like 'visionary', 'uplift', 'support', 'involvement'...she's a force to be reckoned with. Her philosophy and take on life..are as well flavored and delectable as her cooking!!
What a wonderful woman and stories! Wow! I guess she was born 1923 or so. It is hard to imagine the changes she's seen. I've recently reread Maya Angelou's "I know why the caged bird sings" and many of these stories put a voice to that experience. Perfect timing. Thanks for sharing!
This was a treat. I'm only 72 now, but I was part of that baby boomers generation of the 1960s. We were the last generation to grow up sitting on the floor at the knee of our elders listening to "stories". In 1953, our neighbor was a retired teacher who had been born the year the year the Civil War started (1861). I was just overwhelmed by how much she must have witnessed in her lifetime. After all, my dad was trying to figure out which vacuum tube had burned out on our new console television set. He could take the tube(s) to the drug store to test them and buy replacements. If he was lucky, he could replace them in time for the set to "warm up" for 15-30 minutes. Daily broadcasts were for 3 hours every evening. Daily newspapers and newsreels at the movies were how we got most of our information. However, I remember parents and grandparents clustered around large console radios after dinner. When we lose our ability to listen, we lose respect for history, we lose respect for the experience of others and we lose the ability to negotiate solutions to the difficult problems.
Me too Kathryn...I was born here in NYC, in 1948. I am just hitting my stride now, as a writer. I married for the first time, when I was nearly 60...now that my caregiving tasks are complete and mom was called Home last year (at 95)..we will be moving back to New Orleans, where my hubby is from. He was a longshoreman/merchant seaman who came up to New York after Katrina. We met and became friends, and wed in 2008. I cannot WAIT for the next chapter, of our lives...in NOLA.. where I will continue to write, and advocate for children in the foster care system.
What a beautiful spirit. We still need the lessons learned from our elders. She made it clear we move on but don't forget the past. RIP Ms. Leah, your passion shall live forever.

Gumbo and Fried Chicken. This chicken has gotta be better than Colonel Kentucky (KFC), Churches' Chicken, Pioneer Chicken and Popeye's; maybe Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles.. Betty Crocker -- naah
Excuse me, sir. I'm worried about revealing your number. Please edit it out because some people might scam you, for example tell you your loved one is kidnapped and demand money.

There's a difference between knowledge and wisdom this great lady just happens to have both!

Yet people use the tired rebuttal that nobody is alive from back then. You met and listened to history from a witness.
Mama Chase, GOD bless you!!!

Marvellous. Great example
Some old people are extremely interesting to listen to. They should get more respect for what they know, so they share it to the rest of us.
