Kohler Faucet Diverter Replacement

  • If your Kohler faucet spray gun is no longer working, and it is now sputtering, and not fully diverting water from the main faucet, the cause could be a bad diverter. I have two identical Kohler faucets, both of which have had the diverter fail after about 10 years of regular use. I recorded myself fixing the second one in case it can help anybody in a similar situation.
Note that once you get the faucet off, and clear out the excess water, the existing diverter will be immediately visible. Removing it requires that you first remove a split washer, which I could not figure out how to put back in, and then you have to destructively rip the old diverter out. This is an irreversible effort. Make sure you get the correct replacement diverter before you start! I used needle nose pliers for both the washer and the old diverter. Note that when you are pulling in the old diverter, it will feel like it’s not going to come out. You just have to squeeze tight and keep pulling! It will come apart in bits and pieces, but eventually you will bite down on enough material that the whole thing will pop right out. Then it’s just a simple matter of sliding the new one in and popping the faucet back on. Good luck!

This video was helpful, however, the old diverter did not come out as easy for me. I used needle nose pliers to try and pull it out, however, it just ground it down to nothing. I had to take a flathead screwdriver & hammer and basically chisel it out. It did eventually come out in small chunks, however. The new diverter sat in nicely and it does work now. Thanks for posting this video!

Yeah I should have mentioned pulling it out with the pliers was NOT clean, they ripped off several bits before I managed to bite down on a solid chunk and pull the rest of it out in one piece.
